Woke up this morning, had a bad night last night with the missus, and decided 'ill calm down by loading BZII forums up and having a natter'

However. upon pushing of the big green button, i sentenced myself to at least 45 mins of deleting unneccesary processes, removing stupid P2P programs my sister keeps installing, doing virus scans you name it.

To top it off, i rebooted afterwards, and Mircohoot STILL took so *Ammo*ing long to load up properly i almost killed myself. Can microsoft write anything that isnt completely hoot!?

Use this thread as a means to get steam off youre chest about Micro$haft. Excuse the cursing, but anyone with vista can understand.

how long has your computer been installed? and how many p2p craps does ur sister dl?

downloading/installing random crap slows down an operating system over time. Reinstalling makes it boot up in mere seconds.

You can't blame everything on your list, or hell even most of your list, on Microsoft. They made the operating system, but not all the crap you have let get into the computer.

If your sister installs things she shouldn't be, reload the computer from scratch to get rid of all of it and then DON'T GIVE HER RIGHTS TO INSTALL STUFF.

My computers ALWAYS boot up quickly, regardless of what OS they run. And most of them run windows. In fact, my desktop computer? Running Vista right now. And it boots up just fine, despite the fact I have 9-15 programs starting up when I log in beyond the basic windows stuff.

I have decided that I will NOT tolerate blaming ANY company for things that are effectively OUTSIDE of their control here. And since Microsoft is NOT in control of what software you install or let others install, and you ADMIT that is a significant factor in this case here, I won't let you bash them for it.

Sometimes mine is slow, but only because I have delayed in my registry maintenance.

Meh, big registry does not slow down computers as much as people think, my computer is proof of that.  For reference, the backup I made of my registry a few weeks ago was saved as a .reg file that was over 230 megs.  So yea... well over ten times what a normal computer has... and my computer runs circles around just about any other similar computer...

True, but registries with errors DO!

The other alternative to Windows is linux (it has its share of bugs, for some people enough to offset the frustration lost on dealing with spyware) or mac (expensive, generally slower -- some people don't like the interface).

Overall, you're never going to get a perfect OS. Whats that saying that if you make something idiot proof, god will make a better idiot? Ya can't win, I tell ye!  :-P

The best solution to your problem would be to 'put rubber stoppers' on all the sharp edges so that people dont hurt themselves. In other words, give the admin account to someone who knows what they're doing, and have people ask you to install things for them if they want to do that.

You could also try to get a DECENT antivirus. It all depends on how much you think that your time is worth. If your time is not worth a lot, then have fun fighting viruses for hours. If it is worth a lot, then spend your money, not time, on a good antivirus -- like ESET NOD32.

But what are the specs of your computer?
Not that great anymore.  Here are the parts relevant to overall windows 'feel' with speed.
1.8ghz AMD Opteron (overclocked to 2.25ghz).
2 gigs DDR2 ram.

And yes, installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a family member's computer yesterday (there computer is slightly better then mine, except the video card, which is a bit lower) and it ran so beautifully well, Compiz had all the nice fancy effects (they had me max the effects) and all, no slow-down, no hitch, all perfect.  Was really nice. :)

The fact that you're running a server processor probably has more to do with it than the fact that you've got 2 gigs of RAM.

RAM should not effect registry speed, depends on how fragmented it is and such (not like hard drive fragmentation).

well either way. its been slow since birth this computer. booting up has never taken seconds.

its an acer aspire with 2.1Ghz dual proc and 2gb ram, for minor details. it should load up much faster than it does. The processes are not my fault. windows vista ATFER re-install was running 71 processes. I dont think thats the way its supposed to be.

The processes i stop on start up are all stupid and un-neccesarry network connections. windows media player runs about 5 processes without me touching it!

maybe i should have narrowed this post to 'vista flame war'.

I still run Vista. Ultimate, even. AFTER starting everything up, including multiple 3rd party services, antivirus, instant messaging, steam, loaders for hardware I have, and a few other things I am only at 64-66 processes. A few more programs, no more than another 5 processes, and I would be at the max I normally run at on an average day of programming. Your 71 after a reload tells me you are using a "full of useless crap" reinstall disk from the people who made the computer, with all of the trialware, "support" software, and other stupid things they put in because they were paid to. Or want to get you hooked on so you always buy THEIR stuff in the future, because no other manufacturer bundles a particular little goofy tool or something.

As to MS software that isn't crap, I'd submit that their software by programmers, for programmers, is generally pretty darn good. MS Visual Studio is a quality C++ compiler. Their Debugging Tools For Windows are really nice. The programming interface for the XBox 360 is head and shoulders above the PS3. (Sony has far more reliable HW, but it's a pain to program for.) As long as I don't have to touch it, I'll excuse MFC as the rare turd out of their 'by programmers, for programmers' lineup.

Heck, I'd also put Excel in the list of pretty darn good MS products. Word is only middling quality, but Excel generally just works -- the mark of a good program to me.

Agreed. I don't like Outlook 03, though, it's terrible. '07 was much better.

I think the company I was at work experience with used Visual Studio... I saw it launched on one of their PCs once, it looked like a pretty serious piece of kit.
