Come again?

Anyhoo, Windows 7 is the best if you're playing BZ. It utilizes all 4/6/8 cores if you have that kind of processor. If you have a single/dual core processor, I'd say XP is your best bet, cheap, fast, and doesn't use much RAM, and overall efficient.

Beware of internet explorer it is horribly evil.
Yes it is. Stay away. Somebody should warn Microfeck. And call 911.

I have to research this. Arby has been wrong so many times on so many things, but despite claiming he is the only computer nerd in his country, I have actually never heard him give computer advice. Might be good.

Still. BZ2 itself uses 1 core regardless, unless I missed a memo.

BZ2 1.3pb4a uses a pseudo "dual-core functionality" by having the ability to append Game, Networking, and Sound tasks to other cores.

Other than that, it's still mainly a single thread game.

Gone to college, but I now have internet.

With its 1.7 patch release, Company of Heroes became the first commercial DirectX 10-capable game. This meant it was now a hybrid game, looking for the player to choose which version of DirectX to use. Reactions to CoH in DirectX 10 mode were lukewarm. Performance took a hit partly because the game wasn't written for DX10 from the ground-up, and partly because DX10 is a significantly more complex technology than its predecessor. Tech-heads were forgiving because they were impressed with the extra features DX10 can offer a game (better lighting, particle effects, more grass, etc.) "Bottom-line" gamers were not so impressed because the frame rates dropped. As time marches on, more and more games will be written specifically for DX10, and in a year or two, it may feel pretty out of place to be running XP. We currently split the hard drives on our personal PCs into half, and switch between XP and Vista at will - it might be worth the extra money for you to drive on both sides of the street. If you just want one OS, and you care about performance more than anything else, go with XP. If you want to explore DX10, you'll need Vista.

How many of you use vista? How many of you use xp?

I find that if I don't have a signature, some people disregard the last couple of lines of a long post.

I use a neudered version of Vista. (IOW: All the "stock" programs and safety measures are gone and replaced by more efficient and less nagging programs)

I personally RECOMMEND XP and used it on my older pc. Still in process of getting another HDD to put my games and XP on so I can dual boot when need arises.

Axeminister

xp on both pc's. And I use the Indeo codec on both pc's to play older games, like one of my fav's : Forsaken.
There is no knowledge that is not power.

XP all the way. It's quite a light operating system, and though the older ones (95 through 2000) are lighter, they are occasionally less reliable (case in point: ME) and don't have some of the nice useful features.

Vista is one hell of a resource hog, and was really unreliable when it first came out cause Microsoft rushed it (we know what happens here... case in point: BZ2 1.0) but since the release of a Service Pack, it's improved dramatically, as friends of mine say.

Windows 7 I am not sure about, as the computer I intended to install it on has boot problems

If you're looking for XP, I would advise Home or Professional Editions, not Media Centre as it is heavy and has slowed my PC down quite a bit, and it used to be a pretty fast PC.

I have heard reports of systems with Linux-based systems like Ubuntu working really smoothly, and if you can afford it... hell, get a mac too. OS X may be unable to run a fair few programs Windows can, but there is a feature of it designed to allow you to dual-boot with XP.
