Overdrive Terminal / Map Generator
August 13, 2009, 04:01:19 PM
Does anybody know where I can find a good map generator? I don't mean BZ2 maps at all, I mean real maps... political maps and relief maps specifically. I've got the Greenfish map generator but it only does relief maps, the most important part is the political map. Ideally, I would need a generator capable of making political and relief maps with the same program in one go.

Any suggestions?

Ooh, this is odd. Writing on a forum about books...

I've been reading Maximum Impact (Circumference of Darkness to you americans) by Jack Henderson recently, and it's a hell of a book, rather gripping. I thought it rather appropriate too, being about two computer nerds. Far and away beyond us, though.

Its sequel, Seven Seconds, I have yet to read. Or see in a shop.

http://www.jackhenderson.com/?page_id=33

Jack Henderson's CIRCUMFERENCE OF DARKNESS (Bantam pb 12/07) is so good, you'll have a hard time believing it's a first novel. The plot is terrific: a brilliant computer hacker, known as Phr33k, is abducted by terrorists who want him to help them bring down the U.S. The country's only hope for survival: a beautiful 22-year-old prodigy, Jeannie Reese, who, after 9/11, designed the country's new high-tech surveillance system. This is the sort of story Michael Crichton could knock out of the park, but Henderson doesn't need Crichton's help to hit a homer. An exciting, suspenseful, and frighteningly plausible near-future thriller.

Maps and Modding / Bumpmaps
July 25, 2009, 03:00:34 PM
There's been some talk over these recently, and I discovered them earlier this week... Tuesday, I think, on PB4a.

I think EMBM Bumpmapping is supposed to turn these on, but it never seems to work. I get them working by enabling bumps.pak in addon, even though GSH doesnt seem to like it :P

Once I've enabled them, the Scion units look real pretty... the blue parts become properly reflective. Properly, not just lighter, but a proper env-map reflection... which I was impressed with.

Noticed a couple of bugs with them though, possibly why they never worked properly. For a start, the cockpit fades in and out. Second, the ground tiles start to show textures one per tile rather than blended. And occasionally, the texture on Layer 0 seems to swap with a vehicle or building texture. Real odd stuff.

ISDF bumps dont seem to do much.

Anybody care to fill my knowledge in? Hopefully I can learn to do these textures properly too... and get them to work properly.

Maps and Modding / Respawning Pilots
July 17, 2009, 03:47:56 AM
Whenever I get killed in Pilot Deathmatch, I keep respawning as a stock pilot, rather than my own modified soldier. Is anybody able to tell me why?

Maps and Modding / Express Tunnels
July 12, 2009, 10:25:47 AM
Right, so I've placed the 'Tunnel Entrance (no jamm') in my map and it works very nicely, secret area and everything. The only problem is that once I conect a downwards ramp to it I can't use it. I just get pushed back out of the tunnel again.

What can I do to fix this? Whatever it is, Jamsh managed it without making any new objects.

Maps and Modding / Pilot Deathmatch
July 12, 2009, 04:24:19 AM
I'm working on a nice little Pilot Deathmatch gamemode for the TA5 e-Pack (running on the Deathmatch dll), which should include maps for DM and LOOT with a special pilot vehicle list. I'm making the pilots myself and the weapons are all stock or the hidden unused pilot weapons from FE, with some of my own. I will also create most of the maps myself, but anybody who wants to contribute may.

I'm having some problems though. These are listed below.

- Whenever I respawn it is always as a stock pilot rather than a new one.

Anybody have any solutions to this, and is anybody willing to make any new maps?

Battlezone 2 / Half-used textures?
July 07, 2009, 02:01:32 PM
What are the other halves of the Scion Archer (I think) and Band Urchin textures used for? They look like something alive, but I've never seen them in-game. I understand the Urchin was originally intended to be more than we've seen it as (the 'Purple Star Plant'), but what are they?
#28
Right, here's my storyline. Bit of background first, I think.

- I started writing this storyline about a year and a half ago, but only started doing anything recently.
- It takes place directly after FE, which whilst I say directly I mean about three months.
- One of its biggest selling points is that some of the old characters some back (Thanatos, Hardin, Wyndt-Essex, Corbin). I have asked the actors for the first three and received a surprisingly enthusiastic yes, though getting hold of Corbin cold prove rather difficult.
-There is very little story to catch up with before you are thrown into the game.

Three months after the Cerberi Incursion of 2009, the people who spearheaded Project Guard Dog have received their promotions. Miles Hardin has reached the rank of Field Marshal, Corbin is his General, and Carla Wyndt-Essex has received the prestigious Ring of Saturn for her bravery.

The EDF Lead Engineer Major Eisenstein and his team have begun development on a new flying craft to work alongside the Hadean TIE and Scion Bee craft. This craft will later become central to the storyline.

On a routine scouting mission on Spartacus, a young Lieutenant (as yet unnamed) receives a distress call from the nearby sealed-off Miasma StarPortal. Rushing to investigate, he discovers a Blue Hawks Sabre, and a pilot with it who claims to have no recollection of the past three months. She is taken to a nearby EDF base and placed in recovery. She is later identified as Major Wyndt-Essex, who disappeared on a mission on Miasma shortly before the planet's destruction. Nobody has any explanation for how she may have survived.

Before much can be learnt from the Major the base is attacked by Hadean forces. The Hadean Crown claims no affiliation with the attackers, and they are soon found to be members of the Hadean Imperialist Movement, who have been opposed to Thanatos' rule since his rise to power. They nearly overwhelm the base, but are forced back just in time, with heavy casualties on both sides.

A search for their base of operations ensues, which turns up cold, though many smaller bases turn up along the way, each of which are attacked and destroyed.

The EDF are contacted by an extremely frightened Hadean officer, who reports that their main base on Spartacus has been overrun by rebel Hadean forces. They have taken control of the MegaGun and are prepared to fire it at the Hades if their demands are not agreed to. The EDF are asked to assault the base and destroy it. During the assault, many more lives are lost, including that of General Corbin. However, the assault was successful and the Hadean Imperialists have been neutralised.

Disturbing news is received after the assault. A high-security research base on Eris, where Major Eisenstein's technicians and engineers were working on the Dragonfly Fighter, was completely obliterated by an unknown attacker whilst the EDF were concentrated at the Spartacus base. Lieutenant ***** is sent to investigate, and discovers something extremely disturbing at the site. The indications are that this attack was from a superweapon of Cerberi origin, far more powerful than any Hadean megagun. An investigation as to how the location of the base was discovered is launched.

The Dragonfly Project is brought forward and before long thousands of the craft are being produced and are put into action patrolling the skies around EDF bases and various sites of significance to the Cerberi.

The investigation into the base's destruction turns up an astonishing result thanks to an anonymous tip-off. General Hardin's desk was found to have a Cerberi communicator in it. Hardin is immediately arrested and sentenced to death by superheated plasma injection, but manages to escape detention and flee with the loyal White Fox squadron, of which Lieutenant ***** is a member. They are pursued across the galaxy by EDF forces, all the time searching for clues to who the mole could actually be, and where this Cerberi superweapon could be.

More to come, cause I really can't be arsed to type any more and I know you don't like big chunks of text :)

Criticism, comments etc. much appreciated :D

Does anybody have a high px version of the ISDF logo, like the one used for the Comm Tower's console panel?

This format was used by Steeveeo a while back, it would probably be a good idea if you were to use this for your hosting posts too.

Please make sure you give enough notice before a game.

I've heard a few people mention that they would very much enjoy a new community project for 1.3, and that they believe it could dwarf even FE. What do you guys think?
#32
Yeah, really.

I'm taking a bit of a break from BZ2 for a while and am continuing with a mod a friend was running when he quit development a while back. In trying to copy one folder on top of another to replace a bad model and its textures, I am confronted with possibly what is the oddest and most confusing Windows error message I have ever received.

ERROR COPYING FILE OR FOLDER

The file exists.

Does anybody know what's causing it?

Overdrive Terminal / More Band Names
June 01, 2009, 01:31:40 PM
Well, Jamsh asked a while ago for names for his band, and now my band are being renamed. Our old name was Complication, and we've got a pretty long list of suggestions so far, but we could always use more and I'd like to see what you guys think.

Don't worry, NK1, I've already suggested Hedgeclipper :P

1.3 Public Beta 5: Tech Alpha 5 / A VERY odd bug.
May 20, 2009, 03:05:34 PM
I've found an incredible odd bug hiding away in PB4a and TA5 that has somehow surfaced in my mod.

The Scion pulse gun's aim is significantly off, and it now fires backwards through the player model's shoulder rather than straight forwards. I have no idea what is causing it, as I have not changed any XSIs and the only change I have made is to crack open the ODF and INF files for it to rename it the Ion Rifle.

It's intermittent too, so I can never guarantee when it will happen.

Anybody have any ideas? I'll post a screenshot whenever it next happens.

Battlezone 2 / Nexus
May 15, 2009, 12:59:20 PM
I'm considering expanding the Nexus for Perfidious, but have no idea where I can get hold of the original creators to ask about things. Anybody know who made them?

And if anybody has some extra Nexus info, please, tell us :-D

Maps and Modding / Multiplayer Gamemodes
May 12, 2009, 02:27:43 PM
If you guys could have ANY gamemode at all in BZ2, what would you have? Don't think about if it's possible or not, the DLL wizards will surely drop by and tell us. feel free to include gamemodes inspired by other games and mods.

Here is my list:

Pilot deathmatch
Working race
Duel (one player against another in Deathmatch, with other players as spectators waiting for their turn)
Three-way duel (two-on-one)
Co-operative singleplayer

Overdrive Terminal / Music
May 12, 2009, 12:33:58 AM
Turns out a lot of you guys are musicians (more than I realised certainly), so post a little about you, your instruments and your band (if you've got one) here.

I'm 16, and I play bass, guitar, keyboards and sing on stage, though I can also play drums, ukelele, and a fair few others. My band are called Complication and we formed in October '07, with our first gig in March '08. We've done a few since, and our most recent was January. We are a trio (drums, guitar, bass) and we write our own music. There are two of three videos of us on Youtube but they're awful quality so I'm not going to link you to them!

Maps and Modding / TRN file playing up
May 04, 2009, 03:44:17 AM
I made a wonderful new Core Loot map, 1024X1024, but when I made a couple of tweaks in the TRN file it began to behave like a completely blank map - in other words, the map's boundaries moved into the centre so I just bounced around there. It's quite confusing, but if you use TV's FEDev editor to open a non-existant map, you'll see what I mean. The objects I placed are still there and don't move, but I can't move because the boundaries are stopping me.

Here is the TRN file:

Overdrive Terminal / Firefox connection problems
April 28, 2009, 02:03:59 PM
I know many of you are Firefox users, so I know this is the place to come with my troubles.

I installed the 3.0.10 update a few hours ago, and when I restarted Firefox is was suddenly unable to find a connection. I checked my router, all lights green, computer recognises connection. IE worked, so I checked google and it told me I might have a firewall problem, so I checked that Norton was off (I've got 360 and I hate its guts) and that AVG didn't have one in the first place. Windows Firewall had an exception that was pointing to the wrong place, but I fixed that and it still didn't work. Google also told me I can't roll back an update. I've tried uninstalling and redownloading/reinstalling Firefox too, no good.

I then tried to use Opera, which received its equivalent error. Didn't bother to check firewalls here, I assume it's the same problem.

IE wouldn't let me download Google Chrome. I'm not sure why, but I do know it's a piece of hoot. (IE, not Chrome, though thats too new to be that much good)

Has anybody else experienced this problem? Is there something I can do to fix it?
