Battlezone 2 / Re: So, what do you enjoy about Bz2?
December 04, 2009, 07:11:57 AM
I'd have to agree while I love Bz2 to death it stills feels that, compared to other RTS games the tech tree is extremely small. But I think that's more or less a fault of the fact that it had a small development team plus the fact that the computers of the day had an extremely hard time running it on even low settings just look at the default visibility range (300 meters). All those issues aside they still made a really solid title I just wish it caught on more because games today are extremely bland in terms of originality if you ask me most of the popular games today are just pure FPS and RTS with a few of the RPG type games on the side.

We can always hope that someday as technology improves we will see more developers who will venture into the highly unexplored space of FPS/RTS based games.

I had always been a FPS player, and had tried a few RTS games but never liked being out of the action. I had played the single player missions for BZ2 about 20 times before I got a good internet connection and found out about patch 1.2 and G66. After that it was all over, every FPS I played after that would get defeated in a matter of days, then I was back to BZ2 mpi. Replayability is my answer to this. Oh sure, Max Payne and Command and Conquer: Renegade have replayability, but nothing compared to BZ2 mpi. With G66 the main thing that keeps you going is the random attacks, it's never the same. You gotta love that.

Yeah, I gotta agree with most of this. I'm not a huge MPI player but even I enjoy it because of the things you listed. I tried getting into Halo 3 when It was released and I played it for about a month and I just really couldn't get into it, It just felt like it was missing something I can't even play Modern warfare 2 because most FPS's all seem the same nowadays but Bz2 brings more depth into the FPS genre than what most games have today.

Command and Conquer: Renegade is a pretty badass game as well, do you still play it?

Battlezone 2 / So, what do you enjoy about Bz2?
December 01, 2009, 07:42:17 AM
Battlezone 2 is a pretty old game, there's no denying that and yet it still has a die hard fan base that keeps coming back for more and more and lets not forget the modders that do a great job of spicing up the game every once and awhile.

So the question I'm meaning to ask is, what keeps you in this game? For me, It's just the complex array of Strategy and just ol' fashioned fun of shooting. The game has a fast pace that could make any die-hard FPS person cringe and add that with RTS? You get a pretty damn unique and fun game if you ask me. But what I really enjoy is the community It's so small yet you feel like you know everybody and while there are some people who tend to make the game less enjoyable overall the good outweighs the bad.

So come on and list the reasons why you still play the game today! I'll be reading them throughout the day.  :-D

I never really saw many "game breaking" bugs in the single player missions I played throughout all of them (Including scion) In TA5 and most of them completed without a hitch some were much more...difficult than I expected because of AI enhancements but other than that it played well.

It is worth talking about.

There are times when Lyrical music works in game... particularly in ass-kick sections. My favorite example is in Halo 2, you break into a room and the brutes and elites are killing each other with some crazy rock in the background with lowered (though not muted) lyrics...it really set the trigger finger off.

I love that song, It's blow me away by Breaking Benjamin one of the most memorable parts of Halo 2.

Wow, 3000 dollars for that? I thought my computer was slow but mine could walk circles around it and I only paid about 500 for it. How far we have come indeed.

You might be taking too long usually I head over to the base when Braddock says they are picking up activity at the crash site and will send over several turrets and my starting units usually those will hold out until I can tug my constructor over there and build two gun towers which locks up the place nicely. Once the Maulers start coming I keep rebuilding the Gun towers as needed it worked for me anyways you will need more than two turrets though they send units 5-6 at a time and two turrets won't last very long against them.

Overdrive Terminal / Re: Aliens, exist or not?
August 04, 2009, 04:42:16 AM
I wouldn't doubt the existence of Aliens because there is so many worlds out there and we just haven't found one that could support Carbon based life-forms yet. But I doubt there would be a civilization that is far more advanced, like sci-fi advanced (Warp drives, Faster than Light speed travel) chances are they might be looking for us as well but the distance is space makes it nearly impossible but I'm sure, eventually we will find life and if not we will still keep searching.

I love the idea of ranked matches and leader boards! Having people compete for dominance out of it will get some nice friendly competition in the community if it works well.

Battlezone sold enough, (over 1 millon copies i think) to make the "Red Odyssey" Expansion pack, "Battlegrounds" map pack and "Battlezone II Combat Commander".

How many other games of it's time had a million copies sold?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life_%28video_game%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sims

Well, heres just a few examples where have you heard it sold 1 million copies? I could of swore they should a lot less than that but then again I don't find anywhere how much they sold so I don't know. But amount of copies sold aside I don't think the money they made from it covered the cost of production RTS/FPS games never really have sold good in the market hence why there is so few of them but they are one of my favorite type of games so hopefully in the future they become more popular.

Why does anyone need BZ3?  We've got TA5, so the only thing different would be different units, voiceovers/sound effects, and more SP missions.

Basically this, I don't really understand why everybody is wanting a 3rd Battlezone because frankly, with all the legal issues involved with the Battlezone name and what not It's not a viable option. Battlezone 1 and 2 hardly sold much at all so looking at a company standpoint they would most likely stay away from it even if all the legal issues were settled 1.3 might as well be our BZ3 because that's as close as It's ever going to get.

Nice quote by the way. It's a one in a million.

Once I tried toothpaste on my GTASA Xbox game. Completely ruined it.

Toothpaste actually works well for games with scratches long as it isn't that severe. I was looking on the internet on how to repair scratches and strangely that showed up. One of the odder home remedies for fixing games, or at least attempting.

I like the new TA5, and have been playing some MPI lately on it.

My general feeling is:
- The AI still needs a lot of improving. AI units do not react if they are attacked from a distance, scavs get stuck on gun towers or other buildings, and an AI team/player doesn't seem to have any plan when e.g. base is attacked, their pool is attacked.
- Models, textures, and other graphics are outdated. The environment could surely look a whole lot better with some shader help, e.g. parallax occlusion mapping, soft shadows, and a rework/update on BZ2 models. Volumetric fog, ambient occlusion, etc. Tons of new methods out there.

I'm pretty sure this could be accomplished without altering the BZ2 gameplay and storyline. But I realize this is entirely unrealistic for GSH to accomplish.

Your post seemed pretty legit until you started ragging on GSH the guy has done nothing wrong other than making a patch to help keep the game alive in his spare time he doesn't get enough credit where it is deserved as it is now you are asking him for all this extra stuff? It's amazing enough that he has added all the features that is currently in the game It's far better than 1.2 in the amount of features. I don't see you trying to better the game in anyway he is at least trying, unlike most people.

Edit: Appel i don't have anything against you personally, i remember playing games of 1.2 with you awhile ago and you seem like a really nice guy, i just don't appreciate how little appreciation GSH gets from everybody when the guy hasn't done anything wrong.
