Ladies and gentlemen, we are pleased to announce the Battlezone 2 1.3 public beta #1. This is a rather extensive patch to Battlezone 2. A short summary of what's changed is at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/bz2/bz2_13.html if you want to read that. This beta is released as a 36.2MB (37986304 byte) .exe download. There is also a 163KB .zip of the MP DLL source.
Note: this patch is available in English *ONLY*.
This Battlezone II 1.3 patch comes with no warranty, to the extent permitted by applicable law. Except when otherwise stated in writing the copyright holders and/or other parties provide the package "as is" without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose and the accuracy of the information contained within it. The entire risk as to the quality and performance of the package is with you.
In addition, it is *highly recommended* that you install this patch to a directory with a fresh [re]install from CD to avoid problems from leftover MODs, etc. Please do NOT install over 1.2 if at all possible.

A few notes I've given to the beta testers already:
- Your addon folder is renamed off each full build. Odds are, you'll want to save space and zap the old ones, which are tagged with a date and time of renaming.
- In the folder you run BZ2 from, there's a file 'Battlezone.log' (Windoze will try and hide the extension by default; please fix that). That file is created each time you run BZ2, and last time's file is overwritten. Thus if you run into problems, you may want to copy it off for a minute.
- If you get a crash (== Access Violation), please do your best to copy & paste out the details of the AV. I may ask for your logfile (see above) to help debug it. Please report all crashes to me; we've fixed a lot of them, but there's still probably a few left. Everyone will benefit if crashes are fixed before release.
- Please note some terminology: a crash is an Access Violation or some other dialog box that pops up to note the game's quitting. A freeze is when BZ2 stops responding without any crash message box.
- In the folder you installed BZ2 to, there's a file called "changelog.txt." It is updated every build with what changed, with most recent things at the bottom. Please skim over the last little bit to get an idea of what's changed every build-- and it may be worth it to test the areas noted as changed.
- Suggestions for tweaks/features may be ignored or shot down. We know the code, and what's easy and what's not. Also, we'd like to finish this project up eventually, which means clamping down on tweaks, even if they'd be cool.
- You may want to look at the file addon\config\GamePrefs.ini . There are a number of user- tweakable settings in there I didn't feel like doing a way of editing them ingame.

I'd like to add that the existance of this patch is completely and entirely due to Nathan and Ken's good will. They've donated CONSIDERABLE time and trouble to do this ENTIRELY on their own and for FREE.
REMEMBER THAT in your comments and postings.

May I add 2 files, nettips.rtf and readme13.rtf, will save you asking a lot of questions.
I went in there without looking for instructions first and found myself asking what's this do, what's that for.
The shells have been changed considerably over BZ2 1.2 so it helps to read up on it first.
Somebody smack me.
Also, for anyone wanting to make mission dll's with the released source, set your build warning level lower (3) and if you are going to make a debug build, relink it to bzone.lib, not battlezone.lib. Doing this should allow it to work the best.
Information on the 1.3 patch can be found in afew places.
both of these are in your local battlezone II directory once you install the public 1.3 beta. ( change.log & Readme13.rtf )
Also The 1.3 Patch updates the Battlezone II manual located in your extras\help folder.
Well I figured I should post the Changelog.txt to give 56Kers (like myself) something to do while waiting for the download.
Here ya go: http://www.freewebs.com/bryw/changelog.txt
Here (http://members.cox.net/overminddl1/Changelog.txt) is a mirror to the changelog, fast server for you broadbanders that will still take you a few minutes to download...

I have just reawakened my interest in BZ2 and to find Ken & Nathan working on this patch after all this time is incredible. :D :D
Incredible work guys and thanks.
Oops sorry about the double post
Great work guys! 8)
Finally. Kudos to Nathan and all the great people who made the patch possible. In my opinion, the best part is the fact that we're going to have some great mods available pretty soon. I can't wait for EPIC and Starfleet 8 and all the others. :D
It's a fantastic effort, and thanks to GSH and Ken Miller for doing this for our community. It will set this game up for the next few years, until BZ3 comes out....lollo! :D
Well guys it's great to see 1.3 released and i'd like to thank all the people who worked on this.
I've not been seen much in bz2 for the last 1.5 years, but i might be back for a while because of this patch (at least till bf1942 net code is fixed again)
so for the people with long memory's I'M BACK.
Pea Hatche
PH! Welcome back mate. I guess I'm gunna have to stay up late again to catch some games with ya. :P
 wow, after reading that change log Im amazed that GSH and those responsible had the patience to do this with all the whinning people did, how ever I am greatly thankful for the charitable deed :-D :-D
Wwwwhoooaa... errm. It's like the day I've been sort of waiting for
Thank you guys. Haven't tried this one yet, only downloading yet, and the changelist looks pretty good and sniff... all the stuff.
Once more, thank you. It's probably been a hell for you listening to our whining about 1.3 taking so damn long, but it seems you're actually going to finish it and, well, thanks. What else can I say? Damn fine job :)
Well this is good news, dl'ing it now. I was ready for a break from BF1942 about now anyway hehe.
Alright! It's here!
Downloading now.
Well, looks like I'm going to reinstall BZ2, now that 1.3 is out. Whoo hoo! Excellent timing, Nathan!
Just checking back here for the first time in ages...
I think i may just install BZ2 again.... Looking good guys.
I've also reinstalled BZ2 once again and am eagerly awaiting any and all updates.
Big mistake, Bonta. "All ye who enter here prepare to give up all hope of ever having a life." There are so many great mods available and on the way now, you won't have time for anything else.
First thing you need to do is decide which camp you want to join: 1.2 or 1.3.
(Beware the dark side...use the Force Bonta!)
[steps back into the shadows]
Ahh well Bonta. I am a little more hopefull that there is a better way out of this mess.
Welcome to BZII!
I suggest that you go to www.bz2cp.com ...IMO the best mod for BZII (1.2) there is.
BZ2CP looks very hot. They should be able to release a small update so that it will work on 1.3.
Its just plain irritating that there are so few games out there that combine FPS and RTS in a 3D environment. The only other one I can think of at the moment is Sacrifice.
It will not be such an easy patch. The shells need to be radically changed. Some ODF changes need to be made, and a whole host of single-player map and dll changes need to be made. And they shall not do that till 1.3 is final.
"The shells need to be radically changed."
Actually changing the FE shells, and adding a few 1.3ized improvements would probably be in the 20 minutes at most range of time... not that horrible.
The shells would need to be updated. The statchel charge doesn't work in FE so it will need to be replaced by the 1.3 statchel charge. Something about the weapon clearing code caused the statchel charge to break, fortunately GreenHeart was able to fix it with a hack. The Cerberi shields will also need to be fixed. I think all explosions will need to be fixed, especially for the power generators on the first level, there may be a lot more that need fixed too. There are quite a few things that need to be addressed. I don't know if the mission scripts need to be fixed, but updating them couldn't hurt.
I just remembered that the Cerberi walker, the Drath, is completely messed up in 1.3. Avatar said he fixed it, but I don't think the fix has been released to the public yet.
On the walkers:
On work with BZRAP. Unfortunate as it is, ANY walker that isn't stock is busted...
One more big bug I noticed is that when you save a map, with units using custom weapons, and you go back to it, they have STOCK weapons again!
wow, after all these anticipated years is finally out. I give my thoughts out to the people who spent there time, effort, and energy to made this possible.
i've been playing around with the patch for a bit, and sometimes revisit the game for nostalgic value.
its nice to post here again.
I have played both I and II and I absolutely love this series! I have to say I am VERY excited to play this game again. I recently came across my old BZ cd's and decided to install them. Since I use Win2k or XP I had issues with game play so I tried looking for patches. That's when I came across this forum. Installed 1.3beta but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I went in to see what kind of framerate and playability I would have...very impressive at first glace!
I am very excited to start playing this again and look forward to being an active part of this community. Since I have a wife and three small kids (5 and under in age) it won't be too much but I will test and report what I can.
Hope to see you guys out on the battlefield soon!
B
Get the kids into it! get them early :P.
Oh, and btw the bulk of the community at the moment plays 1.2 games, and in particular FE ( www.bz2cp.com )
There *is* a way of making BZII work on XP/ win2k., i myself have win2k and run it fine, just took a while to get it installed.
Works perfect on my XP with no fiddling with it at all.
Same here. Im on XP and havent had problems caused by my OS.
Downloading it now
Good job gentlemen
Well after a few new upgrades... AMD XP 3200+ 1GB new ram, and a 160GB SATA hard drive I thought I'd get back into BZII with a new fast PC. not so. Now there's more problems then ever! I can't play more than 10 seconds in the game before I hit an AV.
Can anyone look at this jibberish and offer suggestions?

Hello,
first I'd like to say, the new patch is great! I especially like the upated AI and the new possibilities of control when starting a game!
I have, however, a small problem, related to language (using a german version here) as it seems. When installing the 1.3, I lose all my control settings. I may set them by hand, but loading them kills them again instantly. I have to use the same keys in sat view as in tank view, which is extremely unsatisfying (not even draw borders around multiple units works in sat view). I haven't yet found a way to fix this, but I think it is because of the screwed key layout.
Is there a way to get the "layout file" of the english version (if there is one)? Or does anyone have an idea how to get around this? There is no way to get an english version of BZ2 around here :-/
Thanks alot,
play along
Idler
I think the file you want is called bzgame_keys.cfg which is located in patch13.pak. I can e-mail you a copy of the file if you want it. Just PM me your e-mail address and I'll zip the file up then send it your way. This is the file that contains all of the key commands.
I have installed 1.3 in my bz2 folder and then i try to install the dune command demmo but it says 1.3 isnt there can some 1 plz help me?
i have the same problem.but i think its a subbuild but im not sure.
there was a zip released somewhere...
i know but it seems no one will put me back in that spot right now.my other name was GENERAL MANSON.but i give up.
hey kool his siggy uses red halo font, like ...ahem ill shut up now...
wth....maybe u could for a while.and just let things go back to normal.j/k.when will things ever be normal?!
i got this error on g66,FS and 1.3 etc.FIXME.'active'team5couldn't find user.
i know this is a totaly out of this world poposal but why dont we put battlezone 1+2 on to PS2 and/or Xbox format because i have a few tank games my self (i have a PS2) and they have goten boring a bit and so other people who have no bloody idea or have never heard of battlezone 1 or 2 could see what it is like on console platform styile
then agian this is an out of this world crazy poposal so if you think it is crazy tell me
Vexx
Yupp, definately nutso-kookoo... :-P
The rights to Battlezone have reverted to Hasbro? Atari? Whichever one owns the other now...
-Av-
Getting the SDK's to those systems is not anywhere near what is called 'cheap' first of all. Second of all, don't port PC games to consoles, it just gives them more validity... and keep console games off the computer, they are never ported well... ever...
HELP MEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
