Title: BZUniverse Instant Messaging
Post by: CmptrWz on November 03, 2008, 04:25:02 PM
I have taken the XMPP (jabber) server I already run and added BZUniverse to it.

Your username is your forum username @bzuniverse.com. For those with invalid characters in their forum usernames please ask an administrator (OTHER THAN ME) to change your username for you. Your password is your forum password. (All attempts to change password via XMPP will fail.)

If someone else wants to pop in here and describe any of this in more detail, like how to use it, feel free.

I keep getting an authorization error. I'm positive my new name should work, and I'm mostly positive the password is correct. I use Psi, is anybody else having trouble logging in?

You changed your display name. Your USERNAME is the concern here.

Well I'm in.

My client added TOO and VSMIT to my Buddy List. Will every user get added or will I have to seek them out?

Your client did didlysquat. They probably added you first, and the server told you about it.

If EVERYONE got added to EVERY list then I would be on everyone's list, as I was the first one to sign in.

Odd, my laptop is not adding them. I will add ppl I know to my list then.

Remember, it's their username, not their displayname you need to use. They also need to authorize you before they will show up.

I see a conference.bzuniverse.com when I use bzuniverse.com as a JID in the Service Directory.

That's basically the 'chat room' where anyone can join. Otherwise, you are in a one to one chat with someone.
Title: Re: BZUniverse Instant Messaging
Post by: CmptrWz on November 04, 2008, 02:53:18 PM
conference.bzuniverse.com lets anyone create a room, but only certain people can make rooms (and their settings) stick around.

For note: Any attempt at getting a list of ALL users on the bzuniverse.com IM system will fail. It passes all auth onto the forum, so the IM server really does not know what users "exist" or not.

If that was not the case (individual signup type deal) then almost any attempt at getting the same list would fail. The server is set up so that even if that list is available only server admins could obtain it.

were would i go about finding this room ???

Post by: Nielk1 on November 04, 2008, 06:26:22 PM
I think I can make rooms under it, or something. (I put conference.bzuniverse.com as the server but it ORDERED me to add a room name).

If you are using PSI, select the PSI Icon by your status, select Join Group chat and use the following information:
Host: conference.bzuniverse.com
Room: bzuniverse
Nickname: <your nick>
Password: <none>

It is a pure XMPP IM client, does not support anything that the XMPP standard does not exactly state, and it tries to support the standards as accurately as possible:  http://psi-im.org/

EDIT:  If you use pidgin (as I do), then you goto Buddies->Join A Chat, and choose BZ2's XMPP connection (if you have multiple accounts in it as I do), and it will already have the server information filled out, so just choose a room name (or click Room List to get a list of current rooms), type your password, and join, it will then add the chat room as a new 'buddy'.

I noticed a send file option. Does the bzuniverse jabber system support/allow file sending?
Title: Re: BZUniverse Instant Messaging
Post by: CmptrWz on November 08, 2008, 12:58:41 PM
Yes, it does. Thing is, it will use a direct connect between both parties. A NAT on either end may cause problems.
Title: Re: BZUniverse Instant Messaging
Post by: Angstromicus on November 08, 2008, 01:35:03 PM
Bummer, my connections couldn't pass a NAT check, period. I'm firewalled by my ISP.

Port 8010 as far as i could find.
Title: Re: BZUniverse Instant Messaging
Post by: Sonic on November 11, 2008, 09:48:01 PM
The clients should be able to specify which port you need to use. PSI lets you specify both the port and external address to use. It even supports using DNS entries. Doesn't help you if your ISP is in control of the NAT though, unless you can put in a request for a port forwarding.

However, I think if you are transferring files with someone who does have a port open, you won't run into any problems...I think.

Perdy kyul! These threads and posts are a little old. Is anyone still using it or did it die off?

I wasn't in the multi chat program today (rare). The BZU chat is really the only way I've talked to some people like CmptrWz and Sonic.

Yep, but the nice thing is because of it using XMPP, you can use your BZU chat to talk to gtalk users or anyone else using XMPP. :D

That's interesting because my pidgin just decided to commit seppuku every time I connect to irc.
But if anyone wants to talk to me (yeah, I know) you can add my gtalk.  It's rock8shark (then) at gmail dot com, just not spelled out.

Can i just make a point regarding this...

Having a chatroom built into BZUniverse would cause a few problems. Most points for discussion or brought up by newbie modders or players etc wouldnt have any record stuck on BZU. The amount of open topics would decrease pretty quickly...

And for all we know CmptrWz could be logging everything, it is *very* easy to do since it is his server. :P

But why would Tom bother to post what we say for the public to see from the BZU chat? He's lazy and also don't want more negative attention towards him.

Wait, that COULD get me more "negative" attention, couldn't it?

/me adds that to his "look into" list, just to spite those that wouldn't like it

Heh.  I just setup an XMPP server at my work (only about a thousand employees total in the US that may end up using this, not many for even a low powered XMPP server), and for security reasons all chat has to be logged (which is one of two major reasons as to why they are looking to leave MSN Chat altogether, yes, they use MSN right now, yick...).  Logging everything out, based on filters and all is so remarkably easy to do.  The other issue my work is thinking of moving to XMPP is that there are a lot of people in a lot of groups that each individual person has to try to keep synced for all the contact lists, and a lot of old people that remain on the lists long after they have left, some of the people who have been there for years have lists over over 2000 people and they do not know who to remove and who to keep, as well as that as people get promoted they do not know so they do not know to move them from one group to another and so forth, where-as with an XMPP server the server can control all subscription information and keep everything perfectly in sync with everyone, and the plugin for ours does that, and again, it was remarkably easy to write.

It is a coincidence that I find the only Australian in House annoying, and that you happen to be Australian. I'm not making a joke of your nationality, don't worry.

No need to compare me to Thirteen

Some of you Americans really need to get out more, couldn't recognise a British accent if it punched you in the face...

Wait, did I say that out loud?

Yeah, Chase is Australian.

They do sound the same. I normaly make my determination by listening for "bloody hell", "kriky", or "mate".

The reason why I thought he was British is because I remember hearing it somewhere.  Not because of the accent.  I can tell the difference between a British and Australian accent.

I seem to only have trouble over voip.

The distance of Australia makes the latency make them sound British.

I didn't care to pay attention to that in House, but the last few ppl I've talked to on Voip I was unsure.

Speaking of bad accents...

I'll give Captain Jack Harkness some credit. It certainly sounds like he's spent some time on the good half of the pond, but would one of you Brits please tell him to stop saying all his "e's" long! When he says "eastrogen" (estrogen) and "peedophile" (pedophile) It makes me want to claw my ears out. If you're gonna do a bad American accent, I understand that, and that's acceptable. But Jack's is so good except for those little things. He's so near perfect. *fawns*

Speaking of which, I do like the instant messaging. Not sure what I personally would use it for though.
