Battlezone 1 / Re: Did bz1 have something bz2 did not?
November 29, 2008, 06:32:18 PM
BZ1 was a man's game; it was rough and gritty. BZ2 looked and felt like it was designed for kids.

The vast majority BZ1 MP games were playable even on dial-up. BZ2's MP issues were of a frequency and type that completely precluded any measure of immersion in the game.

Driving in BZ1 was like water skiing whereas BZ2 was like being on a helium filled boat tube.

QuoteYou have perfect color vision!
FM Hue Test Results

Not bad for someone on the wrong side of 30.

BTW...

QuoteI have 20/10 version (double better then what is considered perfect)

Perfect is actually closer to 20/08. 20/20 is what is considered "average or normal". As such you can see the same detail at 20 feet that someone with "normal" vision can see at 10 feet. Still pretty good :)

I wonder if Atari would buy off on this?

QuoteTHE COMPUTER CODE THAT COMPRISES THE WORK CALLED BATTLEZONE IS THE SOLE PROPERTY OF ATARI CORPORATION. ATARI, IN ALLOWING THE NON COMMERCIAL REDISTRBUTION OF THIS THE CODE TO END-USERS, AND SUBJECT TO ALL OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS HEREIN, GRANTS A ROYALTY-FREE, PERPETUAL LICENSE TO SUCH END-USERS FOR USE BY SUCH END-USERS IN USING, DISPLAYING, AND CREATING DERIVATIVE WORKS THEREOF, SO LONG AS SUCH USE, DISPLAY OR CREATION IS FOR NON-COMMERCIAL, ROYALTY OR REVENUE FREE PURPOSES. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE END-USER USE THE COMPUTER CODE CONTAINED HEREIN FOR REVENUE-BEARING PURPOSES. THE END-USER UNDERSTANDS AND AGREES TO THE TERMS HEREIN AND ACCEPTS THE SAME BY INSTALLING ANY AND ALL WORKS OF THE CODE.

THE BATTLEZONE CODE IS PROVIDED AS IS WITH NO WARRANTY FOR ITS SUITABILITY FOR USE.

ANY USE OF THE CODE MUST INCLUDE A CLEARLY VISIBLE CREDIT TO ATARI AS THE OWNERS, AND REITERATION OF THIS LICENSE.

If not then something like this might work.

What about the unacceptable amount of experience Obama has? Shouldn't that make most rational people think not to vote Democrat, because Obama is running to be the president, not vice president?

The primary role of the VP is to be prepared to be the president should circumstances warrant. In the case of the 72 year old Sen. McCain the likelihood that Gov. Palin would get that opportunity is rather high. Besides.... what did all that experience get Bush/Cheney or Sen McCain for that matter in the last few years?

Atari just had to be an ass.

Curious though.. what exactly did you ask Atari? Perhaps if approached by GOG, or from another perspective in your case, would they liberate BZ?

Obama's tax plan is not socialism by any definition. Get over it. Raising taxes on one part of the population and providing tax rebates to others that qualify might effectively redistribute wealth but it isn't socialism. Seeing as the GOP dogma of trickle down economics has proved to be a failure it might make more sense to try something new.
McCain is a good man just not the right man for these times. Moreover, I don't think he has the temperment to be the leader of the free world... can we get a few more eye rolls and exasperated facial expressions from him     ?
Palin is definitely not the right person. Her presence on the ticket should be enough for most rational people not to vote Republican.

Oppenheimer's thoughts upon seeing the Trinity blast wandered to the Bhagavad Gita where Vishnu is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form, and says, "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.". Text a bit later in the Hindu poem describes Vishnu as this: "If the radiance of a thousand suns / were to burst into the sky / that would be like / the splendour of the Mighty One". Sounds rather like a nuclear blast to me... I was impressed by the reference and hence the name.

I asked for permission from Activision, Atari and Team Evolve for the work i did on Bz Enhanced.

So what would BZE be considered... liberated or is it technically still in the abandonware domain (ie they don't care)?

If BZE included a text file indicating that it is licensed for non-commercial redistribution I could make it known to about 20K gamers who might be willing to give it a try.

What gog.com is doing is arranging for commercial distribution of games that were previously characterized as abandonware.
Abandonware for all intents and purposes is warez.
Liberated games are games that have had a new EULA allowing non-commercial distribution and use (see http://www.liberatedgames.com/license.php).
I'd rather see old games become liberated but GOG's approach might have more success given there is a money incentive for the original copyright holders.

It would be interesting to see how they managed to get the companies to liberate the games as it were. Obviously money... but I can't see it being much for the business model to work.

Given BZ's convoluted ownership I can't see it being an easy target.

Battlezone 1 / Lan Setup.
October 25, 2008, 10:38:28 PM
I have a friend asking how to set up BZ for a LAN. Apparently the obvious method is not working for himand  I haven't a clue as I only ever played online.

Along this same line...where can one find a guide to all the useful tips and tricks of setting up and running BZ?

Interesting and legal approach to dealing with abandonware. I hope they add BZ to their catalogue as it might provide a fresh injection of players into the community.
