Overdrive Terminal / Re: for iron maiden fans only!
September 10, 2009, 09:34:30 PM
Iron Maiden rocks.  I really liked their album Piece of Mind, and I thoroughly wore out the LP after it came out.  I got it on CD eventually. It may be considered their most commercial album, but that's not to say it isn't great.

Cool, thanks for testing, and thanks for the observations.  That's 5 widely different systems that passed the test.

I don't think it's fully CPU-bound (unless your graphics card is truly a beast), but using only one core probably holds it back some.  When I actually buy a multi-core system, I may be able to work that angle a bit more.  I've been pinching my pennies lately.

Modding Tools / Re: Reverse Scriptor version 1.1

1.7 does have some 1.3 features.  I don't know if more have been added since then.  I would be open to adding support for additional 1.3 operations if the need arises.

As a small favor, I'd like to ask as many people as possible download a patch that will majorly help MAD. particularly multiplayer (and record/playback).  I hate to impose on BZ2 fans too much, but I could use a variety of testers to test on a variety of PCs.

I'm exploring the BZ2 multiplayer approach as a possibility, and this test will reveal if there is a PC platform that won't "play ball".  It will see if the Endless Mayhem mission stays in sync with recorded data from running it on my PC.  Tests are promising so far, with 3 different CPU variants perfectly in sync: Pentium M 2.0 GHz, Athlon Thunderbird 1.1 GHz and Core2Duo E8400 3.0 GHz.

If you have the 0.1 or 0.2 beta (or patched to 0.21) and would like to help this testing, please grab this patch (21.2 MB):
http://www.orderlymayhem.com/downloads/mad_beta_0.22_patch.zip

If you would like to grab the 0.2 beta, it's at:
http://www.orderlymayhem.com/downloads/mad_beta0.2.exe

Testing is fairly simple:
1) Extract the patch to the MAD game folder that contains folders mad_win, media and mad_config.
2) Run the batch file MadGame_logging.bat in folder mad_win.
3) In the "Instant" section, launch the Endless Mayhem mission.
4) When the camera sequences are done, press Ctrl ~ to display the message console.
5)  Make sure that last line shown reads: "Reading Log input file: log_input/Endless Mayhem (IA).bil".

The test will run for about 15 minutes if successful.  All you need do is sit back, watch the battle, and wait for either of these messages to appear:

LOG ERROR: Input file mismatch at cycle  ?????   ***************************************************************

or

FULL INPUT LOG MATCH!!!  Cycle 13507   ***************************************************************

When either of these appear in the message console, jot the cycle down (only if the error occurred) and stop the mission.

You can press Ctrl F to toggle the stats and watch the update cycles tick away.

Please post pass/fail results here in this thread, along with CPU and OS details.

A big thanks in advance to anyone who can lend a hand!!!

Another crash as been spotted.  The Endless Mayhem mission crashes when beta 0.2 is patched (but apparently not beta 0.1).  To fix it.  You can re-download the patch at:
http://www.orderlymayhem.com/downloads/mad_beta_0.21_patch.zip
and apply it.

Or simply grab:
http://www.orderlymayhem.com/downloads/Endless Mayhem.mad and put it in the media\instant folder in the game folder, replacing the previous file.

Strange that you sometimes get the exception error.  let me know if it continues, and if you notice any common coincidences.

Modding Tools / Re: Reverse Scriptor version 1.1

Well, General BlackDragon needed to reverse a 1.7 DLL.  It wasn't a lot of work to make it 1.7-compatible, and it makes sense to have it compatible with the latest (and maybe last) Scriptor version.

Modding Tools / Reverse Scriptor version 1.1
May 26, 2009, 12:01:53 PM
I've made some changes to the Reverse Scriptor:

It reverse-scripts DLLs created with DLL Scriptor 1.7.

An object array is created if it detects object slots that aren't directly referenced, following a referenced object.  For example:
Object21 <13>
In this case, there were 12 object slots that were not directly referenced by any instructions, following Object21, resulting in a total array of 13 objects.

It should be ok to convert an array to a single object reference (by removing the <#> portion), if it is never actually treated like an array (via GetByIndex or SetByIndex).

the link is the same: http://www.orderlymayhem.com/downloads/rev_scriptor.zip.

Bah that's what I get when I'm rushed.  One more small fix.  The patch has been updated to fix a few more small glitches (size=6,434,972 bytes).  This one should be correct!

There was a small problem with the patch, which disrupted the Might As Well Jump mission.  If you grabbed the patch after this post, or that mission doesn't crash, you should be fine.  Otherwise you should grab the patch again and re-apply.

A patch has been put together for the MAD 0.1 and 0.2 beta versions: http://www.orderlymayhem.com/downloads/mad_beta_0.21_patch.zip

This patch must be extracted to the MAD game folder that contains folders mad_win, media and mad_config.

Changes:

* Pressing R toggles mini-map mode.
* Pressing Ctrl and R invokes maxi-map command mode.
* Press R to exit maxi-map command mode.
* While in maxi-map mode, click, hold and drag to pan around.
* While in maxi-map mode, use the mouse wheel (or - and =) to zoom out and in.
* While in maxi-map mode, Press Ctrl and R to restore the default view.
* Editor has UNDO and REDO.  Press Ctrl Z to UNDO, and Ctrl Y to REDO.
* Terrain has fine detail texturing (optional).

Many more changes and advancements have been made to MAD, but won't be readily noticeable in the beta demo.

If you don't have either beta and you'd like to download it, grab the 0.2 beta at:
http://www.orderlymayhem.com/downloads/mad_beta0.2.exe, and then patch that installation.

The patch doesn't include the higher-res textures of the 0.2 beta.  If you have the 0.1 beta and you feel you need the higher-res textures, you would need to download the 0.2 beta.

Enjoy!

Sunset at my parent's camp.  I used to use screenshots from M.A.D., but this one is just too darn purdy.

Her singing reminds me a bit of Celine Dion's, only better, more genuine.  I switch stations any time I hear Celine (not really my style), but I wouldn't switch it if I heard these renditions.

The engine itself isn't all that ambitious, although it looks to be like a fine piece of work.  Making a respectable MMO of any kind seems to be ambitious to me, but then to support a detailed planet surface and space elements, and all the gameplay details involved, and I'd say the overall scope of the project is quite ambitious, to me anyway.  I wonder how the game design will live up to the engine design.

This old trailer I found on YouTube brings back a lot of great memories.  Not sure if any of you spotted it.

It takes me back to the day that we released this video.  The community went wild with enthusiasm over it.
