Overdrive Terminal / Re: Holy Inkscape!
December 23, 2009, 02:05:39 AM
Yeah, Inkscape is nice, I've designed a few commercial logos ($$) with it.  And I was using its predecessor for logos as well, i.e. when Inkscape was still named Sodipodi (which only works with specific early versions of .Net framework).

Battlezone 2 / Re: easter eggs...

I recall playing with that stuff.  The AT-ST (with DB's tex) by itself without scaling is bigger than a Matriarch, when by Star Wars dimensions it should be closer to the size of a Hellcat or Scavenger.  I don't know about its high polys, but it worked for me.  And that Colonial Viper was translated to BZ2 by [HEL/LOC] Saint as I helped him with the Cylon voiceovers back in y2k, iirc.  The Itsy Bitsy Spider song (and photo) is somewhere in the paks.

Overdrive Terminal / Re: How are animated GIF's made?
December 10, 2009, 06:39:08 PM
I've used Microsoft GIF Animator several times in the past.  It's abandonware, but works like a charm and is free.

Be sure to also optimize your animation for quality and filesize tweaking. I think I used GIMP for that.

And don't use something like this for your avatar especially when I'm on dialup (well unless I turn off images in the browser).   There was another animated gif like that but it was more like 20MB, not 7MB.

I used to play baritone (euphonium). Epic win.

Technically they are 2 different instruments (bore construct), but for the purposes of playing technique (valves, pistons, fingers, embouchure), they are somewhat similar.  The baritone I used in school was special, it was dented at the bell and the first round.

Aarghh, flashes of the slow dull numbing pain of the Sousaphone sitting on my left shoulder during marches just came back to haunt me.

oh man, Descent, I loved that game! Good one technoid.

Yeah we should get together and play over the internet one of these days (over IPX with a special version of D1) , though I haven't played it in awhile.  I also had a demo of D2 but that's it. Didn't even try D3.

I used to play the brass basses, i.e. baritone, tuba, Sousaphone (basically a tuba) and Rhodes bass keyboard in jr high and high school.  That's 6 years in band, looong ago in a galaxy far away.  Even got a J.P. Sousa award for the high school band geek tenure.

Nowadays I dabble in keyboards, vocals, softsynths (VSTi's, SF's, MIDI, etc), sample trackers and DAW's (record/mix), though it's been awhile since I've done those too, a bit rusty right now.  Might be assisting as a stand-in sound tech (mixer) for a band this New Years Eve, if I'm not busy.

Add to Axe's list, part Deux:

Half-Life 1
Doom 1 and/or 2
Descent 1
UT3 (specifically)
BZ Flag
Quake 3

Luv the old stuff, been a long time since I played LAN though.  Quake II was my fav fps then, and especially now, on the WODX mod.

Looks like a VIA PM880, after Googling.  Unless you know what that cap does/did it's hard to tell how the motherboard died. and you would be hardpressed to find the schematics at all for a PC motherboard from the mfr, much less know how to read it (if you're not an engineer/techie).  If it's one of those caps near the CPU or memory slots, assuming they're closer to the drive bays in an [upright] tower, then you'd be assured those 2 are at least affected to get the board to boot.   You can tell me the cap's designation if you'd like and where it is, but can't really help you further.

Since it's dead anyway, afayk, try what was recommended, find another cap of the same capacitance (and vdc).  I'm assuming it's one of those big cylindrical electrolytic caps (likely polarized).  Do some more Googling. I didn't find any on eBay.  If you want this board badly, then contact a repair service, otherwise buy a new board.  eBay would be your best bet.  I see lots of P4 mobo's there, new/used/refurbished.

Do the new blue guys have blue moon boots and pants that show off their blue buttocks?

RD's comparisons should be evidence enough of a parallel.  They don't really wear any 'moon' boots (I'm sure there are shoes somewhere, didn't really look), but their feet are big (they're 10 ft tall), and they do live on a moon.  And they'll probably show an ass or two.  'hee haw'

Can you not install Win7 (or XP) on another drive, put that into your PC as the boot drive, then turn that broken drive into an external drive and get your files off it?   I don't know about W7, but I've done that with crashed XP (and earlier Windows version) drives and it works for me.  These OSes have gotten more & more complex (since Win 3.x) that disk issues have become harder to fix.  Plus the fact W7 is still a new product, so probably not enough similar occurrences from other people reporting.  Since this is basically a 'file missing' issue, I think it should work.  Only when the drive has a physical ailment should it not work and a recovery service is needed.  Of course, it depends on how misbehavin' W7 is when turned into said secondary drive, external or not.

It's like different, but the same (or vice versa).   :-D

I was totally amazed at how 'old' Spock's ship resembled a flying eggbeater, though it doesn't compare to the one in  "Hardware Wars" (1977, and CGI version, 1997).

What network protocol(s) does BZ1 use over the Internet again?  Is it IPX/SPX or also TCP/IP?   Someone elaborate the whole shmeal.

Jeez, technoid, where do you store all that stuff? I hate having too much old hardware around.

There are alot of emulators floating around on the net for running old software, you can even go back to the days of the old mainframes.

I have plenty of space, at the moment.  Some of my old motherboards (286's, 386's) have been relegated (entombed) into ESD bags.  I've got enough empty XT and AT cases that I don't know what to do with.  Oh yeah and I also have a Royal typewriter, circa 1902, one of my prized possessions, given to me by an old couple 25+ years ago.  Haven't seen that couple, but I'm sure they're both long gone.  The typewriter is still in good working condition, I even used it to type up papers back in high school.

Yeah, I use CCS64 as one of the C64 emulators.  There are tons of D64 images people made lying around on the net.

I'll keep the original renderer in a separate branch just in case.

Thanks, glad I could convince you.  :P

Wow, cool, good to see you Adrian/Ghostfire.  Yes, I remember you because I was a regular at PBZ for a few months before moving on to Pandi forum, and thereafter too, just not as regular.

Afaik, Adrian didn't really work on FE, he was merely a liaison between PBZ and the BZ2CP team, until, again, Menacer took over after the Planet sites decided that PBZ needed a big fat facelift that wiped out some things.  Conflicts of interest ensued, thus moving files over from PBZ to what is now here, at BZU.
