Title: Word Censoring
Post by: Sonic on February 09, 2009, 07:11:53 PM
As much as I would like to say we are all adults, there is the occasional complaint about a word being used here or there. So to make everyone happy, I have enabled word censoring on the forums. However, if you choose that you are adult enough to handle seeing the word, please visit your profile, go to Look and Layout and select "Leave words uncensored".

Interesting, I always assumed swearing incurred a ban...

*Ammo* * crap.

Interesting. It only blocks the eff word.

Yes, BBB ...

It's a work in progress. Sonic and I were having a discussion about forum policy last night. Most things are case-by-case or common sense. But the thing that we were confused about was how to handle profanity. There is a rule explicitly barring vulgarity in the Overdrive Terminal, but there were no rules regarding vulgarity for the rest of the boards.

While vulgarity covers a wide range of indecency, Sonic and I assumed that profanity would be accepted as the norm for someting considered indecent. Profanity isn't a easy issue to deal with on a case-by-case basis when there is no rule premitting or barring it.

So, considering how rarely profanity has been used in the community (at least outside of flaming), it was assumed that some members may not take kindly to profanity here, or would at least not prefer to see it.

We decided it would be appropriate to enable the censor filter with some of the mroe severe profane words (words which would be extremely unlikely to be detected within other non-profane words).

Opinions are welcome. The BZII community has been largely a self-regulated one, and has functioned quite well that way. Hopefully the censor filter / profanity policy won't change that. We don't want to be soccer moms, after all .

Good, because I don't like seeing efff everywhere. Damn I'm ok with, but eff, oi! Block the N word too.

For whatever words are blocked, please don't try to sneak your way around the filter to push the word through. That only shows you're trying to be vulgar, and there is no reason for that.

Yes, if I catch you purposely bypassing the filter, I will ban you for a few days. Keep doing it and the ban will be permenent.

For those curious, here are the current words.
*Ammo*
*beep*
*Service Truck*

Take note, if you choose not to leave words uncensored, those were censored so. :P

Error: Anti-Censorship Option only shows in the forum default skin. Please add for those of us using SMF and Babylon.

And no, it doesn't keep if you switch to the default forum skin, change it, save, then switch back, I have just tried that.

Apparently the admin option to allow users to see words uncensored is applied per theme. Babylon claims it has the option on btw.

Uncensoring works now.

BTW, you realize that "Niger" is a country, right? :P

No I did not, I figured one g was a common mispelling.
Title: Re: Word Censoring
Post by: Steeveeo on February 11, 2009, 09:12:51 PM
Heh, geography failure :P

By the way, I must say that I do not find "Bitch" all that bad of a curse, as I use it often in the context of "this is gunna be bitch to fix," or, "son of a bitch, MORE SWARM!" I think it's a matter of opinion though.

Also, I think the word "*Service Truck*" should be added, as that is just offensive and cant really be used in any other context from insults (or cybering, but I highly doubt anyone does that here...right?).

True... didn't think about that usage.

Censoring option isn't available on the Dark Theme Black one either, could you enable it? seeing Service Trucks and AMMO everywhere is getting confusing and annoying

It's there, just checked. You in "Look and Layout" options and selected the "leave the words uncensored"?

Also, bitch is no longer censored but *Service Truck* is.

Right, thanks... might have been whatever Steeveeo had. Either way, it's there now.

Are "*Ammo*" and "*Service Truck*" from the 1.2-ers? Because why are such words offensive? You need ammo to shoot, and the trucks to repair your ship. SOMEbody please clarify!!!

You sir, are a wiggly worm sir...

No seriously, don't be dumb.
Turn off censoring and THEN look at those words in the list AGAIN.

I think he might be doing it deliberately.
Title: Re: Word Censoring
Post by: Arbystrider on February 20, 2009, 04:30:07 AM
I thought it was off by default...

LOL! So funny having the admins replace those words with Service Truck and Ammo!

Yet still I like having Service truck instead of "EFF"

Sweet. Any time I wanna say Service trucks, i'll just say *Service Truck* instead.

Hmmm, I wonder what tigger is up to these days.

Notice most of the people here have uncensoring on. Or so I think...

EDIT: GOD you just spoke a vulgar word!!! LOL over-reacting...

I found a good configuration for a morphed warrior in 1.3. It's quill/emp

First you link fang+empsteam using weapons linking, morph and run up to a GT/asstank/mauler and use both attacks at once. It stops the unit from firing while killing it at the same time.  The only problem is that EMP stream is hard on *Ammo*, and you're still vulnerable to getting backstabbed.

My favorite weapon combination on a warrior would have to be lightning+gauss (morphed). It essentially makes you into a fast moving version of the titan -- and you can snipe out a jammer in one hit of a linked lightning/gauss attack from ~180m. If you had more than one *Service Truck* service you though, you would essentially be a more versatile version of the titan.

Its an americanism. Where you're from it's probably spelled "whimp" but in north america its spelled as "wimp"

I just thought of a new curse word replacement. Son of a *Mega Statue* that was a hard game!

Because we have others here from all over that cause the language to evolve faster.

Most hybrid languages tend to be annoying.
I'm sure Arby can relate to Singlish, and chinglish is very confusing and quite offensive when you read it phonetically

Title: Re: Word Censoring
Post by: Steeveeo on February 27, 2009, 12:24:31 PM
As a note, to those of you who are purposefully censoring themselves with the *<bz2term>* stuff, whether it is a joke or otherwise, please stop.

I know it's not the censoring filter, I have that turned off. I am finding that the artificial censors are even more agitating to read than the actual curses.

It's not a funny joke (and hasn't been since the second page of this thread), and doesn't present itself as a good solidifier for any arguments/yelling.

In order of annoyance, from least to greatest, in this instance:

- Fake swears (frikkin, frik, dagnammit).
- Actual swears.
-
-
-
- Artificial Censors.

Yes, that is a large jump between the first two and the last, and that even ain't to scale. So please stop with the overused jokes, they cease to be funny.

That's a little over the top :-o. You sound like you're trying to speak for the whole community, when some (most) people think it's actually funny.

We're better off having people (possibly young people) read *Ammo* rather than "other word". That's why the censor was put there in the first place.

If people try to get around it by using what you call "fake swears" to make sure their language is displayed, that's where the problem lies.

You missed the point.

I don't mind the actual censored words, but constantly faking a censor for the sake of a joke got about as old as a 4Chan meme right off the bat.

Rule of Puns and One Liners: Say it once, maybe twice, or don't say it at all.

Amazing how some people want censors, and others want nothing more than to find a way around them...

Warning, mildly offensiveness coming up here...

In Tribes/T2 at first it was just using symbols for letters, like $uck$ @$$,

Once the censors were updated the players that wanted to express themselves just started making scripts that pieced together sections of the audio snips... getting them to say things that couldn't be censored.

It's a basic human need, I think, to overcome obstacles and/or find ways around blockades...

Only if they are blocking something you want/need Av.

I personally couldn't care less about censoring. I don't consider even the 'worst' swearwords to be even slightly offensive unless they are directed towards me.
