tried copying the shortcut to dektop....It copies over ok, but says it can't run, it is missing a FFC10p.dll from my computer

Check that ffc10p.dll exists in the target directory. That DLL is included in the initial install of BZ2, and also included in ta5/pb5.1 installs as that file changed slightly. The working directory (i.e. the "Start In" for the shortcut) might be wrong.

Win7 pro (and up) have an XP/32 virtualized mode on supported CPUs. And that can run 16-bit apps.

It's not 100% MS's fault. x64 on both AMD (who came up w/ x64) and Intel chips can't do 16-bit code when running in 64-bit mode.

Battlezone 2 / Re: Windows 7 Installation Problems
October 29, 2009, 12:10:06 PM
The BZ2 installer executable (NOT BZ2's executable, just the installer exe) is a 16-bit app. 64-bit CPUs can't run 16-bit apps. Install on a 32-bit machine and copy the installed folder over. Or pay for Win 7 Pro (and/or up) which has a XP 32 bit mode you can use to run the installer.

MS *really* needs to provide a virtual machine to emulate 16-bit apps.

Unless you're the announcer at a horse race, most people can type faster than they can talk. Hitting a few number keys to build a scav is *not hard*.

Battlezone 2: 1.3 Public Beta 5.1 / Re: Skins for 1.3

Teamcolors have always been pushed over the network. Just that they always pushed the same values in Strat/MPI.

DM w/ randomized colors has been part of 1.3 for a LONG time now. You could see the network pushing working w/ that.

Do that, and you won't be smited as much.

I used the notation I did because it's accurate and useful to people who think logically. Sorry I misjudged the audience.

But BZ2 will look for a .ogg file for the shell files too. I think if .ogg exists, or exists and is newer, then .ogg is preferred. Just like .dxtbz2 > .tga if exists and timestamp(.dxtbz2) >= timestamp(.tga).

Overdrive Terminal / Re: HDD Death
October 16, 2009, 05:33:21 PM
Follow the links on techreport.com . That HD runs slower (5900rpm) than most desktop HDs (7200rpm). Faster than most laptop HDs, though. Running it over USB would be a further speed tax if you're using it for general purpose HD.

I wouldn't boot off of such a drive, but as a secondary drive for large media files, it'd probably do great. I already do that at home -- have a small & fast (150GB at 10,000rpm) boot drive, and a larger & slower (300GB at 7200rpm) secondary drive.

Maybe newegg was reading the above. Sale (thru the end of the month): 1TB drive, external docking station. $72. Details here: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/17780 . It's a manual backup strategy, but so are burning any sort of cd/dvd/bluray.

Doesn't seem to work.

That's not what I said.

Detail out what you *did*. Not what you think you did right or wrong. Talk about the concrete things you *did*.

BZ2 doesn't need .pic. Use .tga. That's supported by lots of apps, including BZ2.

And, your comments are too short vague to be able to really help. You need to detail -- precisely -- what you did, and where things didn't work.
