Title: Gamespy servers appear to be down
Post by: GSH on September 16, 2008, 11:31:08 AM
The gamespy matchmaking servers appear to be having 'issues' -- where they show no games at all, not even any of the advertising sessions. Gamespy has had similar issues in the past, and it's cleared up. After a few hours. I hope that's what'll happen, but no guarantees.

As noted in nettips.rtf, Gamespy is merely a matchmaking service, where it tells prospective clients the list of servers. Once a client gets the server's IP address, Gamespy stays out of the picture. JoinIP should still work.

How are we going to pass out IPs securely so we can play games? Is anyone hosting right now?

We could always use a virtual LAN.

Make a temporary -IP- subforum and give only trustworthy people access.

I suggest we use hamachi. That way no IP's would be given out. But would that slow bz2 down going through the ham servers?

i tried lan party through hamachi it didn't work.
you can rewrite the code and use the bz1 servers that is what i would use but it probably will be hooked back up and all will be forgotten.

I want to play a game, anyone up for one? I'll PM my IP to trustworthy people who want a game as well.

Hamachi works. Its the only way I've been playing this game with my brother.

You have to use an older version of Hamachi because newer ones have less compatibility with games...especially older ones.

Look for version 1.0.1.5

Are other Gamespy supported games down?

EDIT: Battlefield 2 (looking at their forums) is acting funny too. It's displaying a bunch of games with 0 ping, and you can't see who's in it until you join. I don't know if they use GameSpy too but if they do, I'm glad that more than one game is affected.

Gamespy is crap.

While BF2 is "powered" by it, it doesn't use the program itself.

Out of curosity, but why are you so worried about your IPs aside from them being associated with your username? Gamespy reports the IPs to the BZ2 client in the description box. It isn't like we have anonymous IP hosting going on here.

On the other hand, if the only issue is associating an IP with say Feared_1 or Michael, have a post with IPs that are hosting but don't say WHO is hosting them.

People have complained before that posting IP's is wrong. I was a little confused about that myself, but I thought I would just conform to the rest of the people :P

Too late for a game tonight, though, maybe GS will be back up in the morning.

Well, I can see posting IPs being wrong but good at the same time. We have blacklists for mail servers and there is even a site that has a list of known IP and e-mail addresses used by spamers/idiots on forums. There is even a mod in the works for SMF that can check your IP against a blacklist while you are registering. There really isn't true anonymous on the internet anymore, but I suppose it's still a good thing to keep the IPs to those who know how to use them wisely rather than to those who would flat out abuse them.

By posting IP, it will make it easyer for a hacker to gain entry to someones computer.

On a further note, I have been unable to find out any more information on this issue also.... I just hope that they are upgreading servers or something.......

That's bullcrap! There are only a finite amount of IPs and a hacker can attack anyone of them. They can even get a general idea of WHERE they are attacking based on who owns the IP range at the time (Mesa Community College for example). The only thing posting an IP will do, if anything, is allow an attacker to know WHO they are attacking. I suppose in some sense if you know the person well that might give you an edge when attempting to hack, but most of the time it does not really aid the attacker other than "I know who it is I'm attacking".

For those who don't understand bots, don't write your IP perfectly just as you don't write your email perfectly.

Can't you tell bz2 version 1.3 to use a different match making server through gameprefs.ini?

Quote
// Host name, port a created session will register itself with for
// matchmaking, and potential clients will use for searching. DON'T
// CHANGE THIS UNLESS YOU'RE DARN SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!
HostMasterServerName = "master0.gamespy.com"
HostMasterServerPort = 27900
ClientMasterServerName = "master0.gamespy.com"
ClientMasterServerPort = 28900

Yes but the server has to be running the right proprietary software.

The Gamespy Master Server is down:

QuoteGameSpy's Master Server Query  9/17 6:48am - Edited By: [WIZ]Falcon  9/17 6:48am (1 edits total)
Greetings,

It has come to our attention that the servers are not showing up in your game's server browser or GameSpy Arcade or on GameSpy Comrade.

There may be an error in the Master Server Query or there is possible maintenance that is taking longer then expected. The GameSpy Admins and Techies have been notified of the problem and are working on fixing it. It should be fixed hopefully soon so please just wait and look for another post confirming the fix or until you see servers in game.

The maintenance or error goes out to ALL games that use our Master Server Query. That means if the game uses GameSpy's server browsing to locate servers, you will not see any. You may how ever still be able to join game's by direct connecting to them through IP address.

Thank you.

That's good to know, only a server technical problem, I was worried they canceled the account alltogether and no one can play bz2.....

Nice to know.

We'll see if BZ2 is still on their server after the maintenance/fix.

Well 3 days now and still no in game browser. If anyone is willing to help me sort out the technical issues I will set up my machine to host games and post ip to select players. Or alternatively, gamespy says to use thier browser and join games through them. We can also use Gamespy's player matching service.

Klang made a simple bz2 launcher that gets a list of games launched though it from a server. I don't know if it is 1.2 only, but it is worth a look.

but it does suck.
bz1's server went down long ago from activision and we were able to set up a new server

Technically, every person who posts here gives me their IP address. Each post. Each page view, even. And the other admins can see them too.

The same goes for ANY site you visit.

Your IP address is not secret, and hiding it does not keep you safe.

In fact, if you keep up this nonsense, I will rig the damn board to show EVERYONE the IP address of EVERY poster, just to spite your idiocy.

If the gamespy server doesnt come back up you may need to for manual matchmaking.

go to bz2maps forum and click the first topic under technical stuff and there is a way to join games without gamespy during this crisis. Use it to join 1.2 games easily, or copy the persons ip address down to join 1.3 games using the ip connect choice in Battlezone II.

[WIZ]Falcon posted a topic asking people to post games that need to be "fixed":

http://forums.gamespy.com/gaming_help/b50691/19908000/p1/?21

I posted "Battlezone II: Combat Commander needs fixing. Not showing any servers at all." Tell me (or post in that topic, I guess) if something needs to be added. I didn't know if I had to be version specific or anything, so please correct me if I missed anything.

I tried querying the gamespy server a few minutes after I tried in BZ2, it gave no response at all actually...
Probably still working on it a bit and I caught it at a bad time, will try again later.

The guys on the GameSpy forums said that the problem should be fixed now, but Battlezone II is still having problems.

I just alerted them about that now, as well... I hope they didn't throw us in the dirt.

Quote from: [WIZ]FalconEverything should be working now I believe or at least most of the games. Post letting me know if there is a problem.
