Title: Community Project Vote #1
Post by: VSMIT on July 28, 2009, 11:11:01 AM
And with today, story submissions are now closed.  The time for the first vote has arrived.  These are all of the stories we have received.

Mr X's Time story (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9596.0.html)
AHadley's Perfidious story (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9610.0.html)
General_Hoohah's FE Sequel (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9498.0.html)
Clavin12's story (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9597.0.html)
Bigbadbogie's story (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9607.0.html)
TheJamsh's Fall of the Empires story (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9603.0.html)
ScrapPool's Full Circle story (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9683.0.html) (Late entry)

If you cannot make a clear decision, or you just want to explain your decision, you can reply in this thread instead of using the poll (like if you wanted a certain part of more than one of the stories in the final version).  Your comments will be taken into consideration.

You are free to vote for any of the stories (including your own, if you're an author), so think about your decision before you make it.  There may be more than one winner in this round of voting.

This poll will run for two days.  After that, no more votes will be counted.

If you have not read all of the stories, please do so before voting.

BZ2MD Votes:
     ScrapPool's Story: 1

I'm torn between Mr. X's and AHadley's story. I've skimmed over the stories and based off of people's concerns about time travel in Mr. X's story, I'll go with the safer bet and vote for AH's story.

Agreed.

AHadley's story is the best one IMO.

I am also torn between Mr. X's and AHadley's story. I went with Mr. X's just because I like time travel :-P

If I change my mind I will let you know. The main decision for me was AHadley's (never noticed there was an L in there) story is still going to be made (hopefully) with or without the CP, but Mr. X's would only exist as a CP. That and I have a thing about time and dimensional travel and quantum mechanics atm. Mr. X's story is also safer to story line if you think about it. The thought is that AHadley's could easily step on highly anticipated mods like EPIC without coordination, while Mr. X's exists as a parallel story to such events.

If you feel like summarizing your stories before the final vote is in...here would be the place to do it!

The ones that don't get picked can be locked away in a hard drive for a future Community project or some other thing, such as a separate mod, or a science fiction novel. (lol)

If the authors deign to summarize their stories, they should do it in their story thread.  This is the voting thread.

I decided to leave my vote with Mr. X's story. I think that it may need some alterations here and there but it has a lot of potential brimming within. I am a bit iffy on the whole time travel thing, although the possibilities that exist within the basis of the story could bring an interesting SP experience that would not only be fun to play but also has the potential of being well within the spirit of the BZ universe IMHO.

Could you possibly give an exact time that voting will cease tomorrow?
Title: Re: Community Project Vote #1
Post by: Angstromicus on July 29, 2009, 07:52:55 AM
Since a new story has entered, votes already cast may be changed if wanted. Besides, the stories already submitted may receive further development and as a result alter opinions.

Edit: Voting will be open for a little while longer because of the new entry. The poll needs to be open to account for the time it takes to make a sound decision and for those who don't regularly visit the site every day. The exact time for this is unspecified, but it'll probably sooner rather than later because a good number of votes are coming in.

I agree. There's to many people on here to have the vote for only two or three days.

I'm still holding firm to my current vote, but I'd sure hate to see Scrap Pool's story eliminated from the CP in this round. His story is at a developmental stage that exceeds others, so it'd be interesting to see the other stories at that stage and then compare them against SP's story.

I'm pretty sure whoever voted for the ones that obviously will not win at this point should change the vote to something else that has better chances...

Best bet is to stick with Perfidious, Time Travel, or Full circle for votes now. They are the main contenders.

Don't change your vote even if you know you're going to "not win". The vote isn't looking for a solid story, but what the community is interested in so we can create the finalized story.

Title: Re: Community Project Vote #1

I'm fine with merging them but I still don't like the time travel bit. What if we made it so that there where simply portals instead of time portals with the keys and all. Maybe the places they go to couldn't be reached without the portal so that you couldn't get there with a mere spaceship.

There's no real way to restrict space travel, since it's just so freaking huge.

Sometimes a collaborative work can be worse than an individual work because the stories being blended never complete each other, quite. But still it could be good. I would definitely help.

That's an excellent idea: The master minds behind these great stories to jointly discuss combining their stories.

I'm sure the final product would be awesome, but the discussion should be public as much as possible. The community is the only possible entity that can decide which ideas are wanted most.

We need something new and fresh to differentiate from the other story lines (from the previous games and mods). A couple big differences and lots of little differences (like the rank of the main character) would be the way to go. We should develop every little part of the story with histories and back-stories (separate from the main story line, and not discussed much in the game). For example we should give every character, planet, and object (such as a flagship, or innovative weapon) ,important and unimportant, at least a paragraph of history. Tolkien, and his followers, did this very well (especially with the Silmarillion) and made his books extremely popular and interesting.

By working it into the actual game, though, it creates a much more immersive experience. That paragraph of history transpiring into you flying through fields of artifacts in BZ1...so satisfying.

I know I absolutely hated the beginning of FE with the novel you had to go through to learn anything that partained to the story. Headcount of who read ALL of it?  Anyone? It needs to be accessable without being a burden.

It may not be surprising, but I eventually read it! And that was a notoriously large amount introduction IMO... I prefer my storyline spread out a little more... for instance I'm not dissuaded by a 1 page full brief every once in a while... There is that balance between playing time and story which enriches playing time.
