Title: Stupid Damn School Filter...
Post by: Warfreak on October 28, 2009, 08:19:27 PM
Computer Labs at my school originally were separate from the School Network, meaning the filters did not exist.

Some dumbass decided to change that and now I can barely get to the forums here. Anyone know some workarounds.

* Filter blocks EVERY BZ2 site besides this one, but i think it is next.

Install logmein on your PC, leave it on and browse though it from school. Just an idea.

My home pc is turned off and disconnected from the wall before I leave for school, so that option is gone.

* ScarleT: The second link was blocked.   However, Proxify does work well. (Doesn't allow java things to start up but oh well.)

* Heh, unable to navigate Bzcomplex due to the Javascript deal. :|

Get your dad's shotgun, hunt down your network administrator and force him to allow access to all BZ2 sites.

Or just use a proxy... until they ban proxies like they did at my old school.

Only if you use IE 6 or earlier... It's a compatibility script.

the best idea would be to leave your home pc on and use Teamviewer, it's a simple remote control program, you don't even need to install it, just run it and it works, I use it every time i'm away from my pc. :)

from what i know it would be difficult to ban proxies outright. You can ban individual proxies, but new ones pop up daily. If i were in your shoes I'd get a usb stick with a portable browser. And keep it set up for a proxy, if they start filtering that one just google for a new one, and use it. I've found that foreign proxies take longer for people to find out about, so i dont have to switch as much. The only problem with that is, Google determines where you're coming from and sets its page accordingly. So if you use a Taiwan proxy www.google.com redirects to http://www.google.com.tw/ :P

Read those two posts side by side one more time

In all seriousness, use Google Translate. Translate the page to a language close to English (or a variant of it - like Elmer Fudd ). When you hover over the text you'll be given the original.

Most places don't realise that Google Translate can be used as a proxy, and if they do then the language department won't let them block it.

I think that they just banned every site that had the word proxy written on it somewhere. So they pretty much banned half the entire internet.

Using proxies can make them ban you from the computers. You likely signed an agreement when you came to the school called the AUP or Acceptable Use Policy.

However most schools have on that policy that you may use sites for hobbies. If BZ modding is your hobby, then go complain :P

If they refuse to budge, and it is on the aggreement, then go for proxy.

Though to be honest, I never had one to sign... so I could get away with murder on the system. I've already found a backdoor to each computer's HD and the server, and managed to nick a copy of 2DDesignV2

I use my computer at home with VNC/RDC or as a full-blown proxy. Unfortunately, I can only go with VNC as I did a reformat recently and haven't set up the proxy again. I seem to remember it being a ballache so I haven't tried since.

Theres a website that makes a new proxy every 7 days with vague domain names. Sign up to the site and you receive emails from them each time.
http://peacefire.org/

My college's security is a joke. I can easily get on an administrator account and gan access to SIMS. However, they block so many things by word include filters.
eg, I couldn't research 'alpha particle scattering' last year because it contained the phrase 'scat' and you cannot get on any forums at all; anything with 'forum' is blocked. That includes help forums or subject-related boards.

The IT department is a freaking joke. Seriously.
The servers are forever crashing, random machines just break, there was 4 major virus outbreaks in the last 2 months that crippled the entire system and infected any other machine connected to the network (lol, macbook pro.) They finally got it fixed after 3 days, but some dumbass teacher decided that they didn't need to get their laptop scanned, bought it back in after the weekend and sure enough, same virus again.
The IT teachers don't know what they're talking about 80% of the time, the 'technicians' may as well work at the PC World helpdesk or the Genius bar in the Apple Store for all the use they are.
We're told to use USB sticks for convenience and backing up, but 80% of the computers require an administrator password when you plug on in, which none of the teachers know of course.
We're now forced to change out password every 4 weeks, and it can't be the same as any previous one. My memory is bad enough, yet alone the 14 year olds in the school.
We have printing credits, basically we pay 2p per black and white page, 20p colour. Fair enough, prevents waste, but the printers regularly don't print, but the system still charges you. Printing out your 20+ page project in colour, and having the bastard thing charge you isn't funny.

I could go on, but the oven is beeping with my dinner.

Agreed. School IT people are scum. Let's kill them all.

I know how you feel about those darn printers that charge you. They are absolute rubbish. They used to charge me for other people's printing and vice-versa all the freakin' time.

I know the feeling. In my first few years, the technician was great. He was really helpful, but I don't remember that much about it, so he might not have been so good.

The new ones, though, are awful. Give them a problem and it'll take weeks to get it fixed (if at all). Password problems are met with mocking most of the time, but forgetting them is perfectly normal given the amount of stuff we have to remember at school anyway. I told them that I couldn't use SkyDrive, they told me to e-mail the county service. They emailed me back and said it was nothing to do with them, go to the technicians. Who, of course, said they had no control over things. There are regularly computers that refuse to work, printers that won't turn on, broken internet connections left right and center... and as a final show of foolhardiness they did away with the antivirus we were using (sophos, i think?) and replaced it with... Windows Defender.

Yeah, windows defender. We've had seven virus hits since they started two years ago.

They've also installed a site copy of vista, and then having bought the lisence they decided not to use it - so the server runs Windows Server 2003 and the teacher's laptops and their desktops running Vista Ultimate. Which can't be very good for compatibility.

They let teachers install their own software too, which given some of their tech literacy isn't very good either. They've left the servers open to backdoors, they've made all the wrong mistakes. Put it this way. Raven's school's system is perfect compared to mine.

I can crash my school's server in 5 seconds flat. Its hilarious.

Yup, forgot about that one; 'its got nothing to do with us, email EMBC'
Uhhh, yes, it does. It says "LOCAL LIST" in huge capital letters on the filter page, which means that YOU set that one, not EMBC.

I don't know how, but one time all of the software on a whole room of computers was lost at my school,

I wouldn't mind, but it was right next to the technicians' office...

If I had the mind to, I could backtrack to the server and just delete any software I please. It's a joke.

How's this for stupid?

Start > Programs > Library > War in Europe

By going up from this folder, you reach the software folder. One more up and you're in the server root and can cause any havoc you so wish. It's a joke.

I'm on VNC at the moment, in ICT.

To access the toot at mine, type in your address bar: \\ and you get the folder with every server the school has. \\long1 is the package server.
Being on  a mac, I get them all down the left hand side of my finder window anyway.

Doesn't mean you can do anything with them, though, Raven.  I just like how the PC icons are BSoD'd.

Oh yes, it does mean I can do things with them. The package server, for one, allows full access rights. Thats the installers to all of the school's software.
I also have access to every single user area on the network. Its actually quite handy when my friend wants to send me a file or something - because exchange is down most of the time I can just nip into his area and take it. I'd never mess with anyones files though, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I replaced the default desktop once just as a laugh. Just replace the file deep in the NETLOGON thingy-ma-jig. Though after I did that they fixed it and you can't write files to that directory anymore. Why just that directory I will never know, the rest of the server is still open :S
