Yes...a new PC and yes the 1st glitch in the install process is w/ good ole' BZ2...
System is a Dell XPS 800, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit edition
Won't allow install...says..."contact publisher re 64-bit or 32-bit version of the program"
Tried compatibility mode as XP service pack 2 and 3...still get same "denied" message
can you copy another install from another disk/backup?
just installed win7x64 myself not 2 hours ago, so still getting to know my way around. But if i find anything out ill let you know.
I had a install on a Backup Hard drive but it gave me an errors saying "lacks d3d-blahblahblah"...So..I am stumped for the moment.
I have no doubt this issue will be figured out by minds much younger than mine..
Should this be in another discussion board?

If its a problem with a DLL (d3dx9_##.dll), then you need to install the latest directX, it will solve the error.

If your copy of Windows 7 is 64-bit, then BZ2 WONT install. Same if you use Vista 64-bit.
You will have to copy it from a previously installed directory.

Hi,
I've no experience with Windows 7 yet, however BZ2 installed just fine on my 64 bit version of Vista Business N with SP1 (at the time, now SP2.) I don't recall doing anything special to get things working - just using compatibility mode as is normal for older games.
Cheers,
Scoob.
BZ2 is strictly 32-bit only. So copy the install over.
Or go back and install x86.
As has been said by above posters, you "should" have problems installing BZ2 on vista 64 or 7 64, as microsoft stripped out the 16bit subsystem if I recall. This means the installer for BZ2 which is written for 16bit, will not run, however the game... which is written in 32bit, should run fine. Windows still has compatibility with 32bit in its 64bit Operating systems.... else they'd have a real issue getting anyone to buy them.
To solve that, you usually need to install BZ2 on another 32bit computer, then copy the entire directory(since BZ2 doesn't really put anything in the registry or make a registry footprint, it can be copied from computer to computer and doesn't actually have to be reinstalled like some programs) to the new computer.
Also, Vista and 7 don't come with directx 9 installed that I know of, and as posted above, you need to reinstall Directx 9 on these so you'll have 10 and 9. 10 will not run most older games that use 9, especially if it calls for that certain dll file..... which a lot of games seem to do. I've heard reports of other games running on DX10 with that single file copied over, but there's really no point in not just installing DX9 since it can work together with DX10 and not cause any issue.
Just thought you might could use some elaboration on the details, since most of what I posted has already been said in a smaller format.
OK....So far, ZA was right...I installed the DX 9/10 update and that got me ruinning for the copy installed on my external HD...
Now..the thing is, that copy on the external is a rte 66 2 beta 25(or so)...Should I take that ext HD and do another completely clean install and update it to the current beta?
Then...do I copy the "installed"..BZ 2 directory onto the HD of my new win 7 PC HD?...Or do I just play it off the external?
Excellent clarification Vid..
Copy a clean install of BZ21.01 or so over to your Win7 machine, then install PB5.1 on top, then any mods you want to use.
Have you tried making a shortcut to the setup.exe on the cd and setting its compatibilty or did you set the compatibility of bzone.exe?
I opened the CD, found the exe and set the compatibility to XP SP 3...then SP 2...no luck..
Okay, then just copy the good install to W7 HD (might be faster retrievals). Don't put it under Program Files, though.
Soo.the plan is....
Get home,
reboot old PC
Reinstall BZ 2 and patch to 1.2
Install 5.1a
the install latest versions of rte 66 per instructions
Then copy that complete and working folder into win 7 hd
copy shortcut and correct per instructions on rte 66 2.0 thread..
Yup :-) (Unless you already have that all installed on the old pc, then just copy that)
Alrighty well i had only one hitch installing BZ from the CD or installing the 5.1 patch. Works great, started up a game, graphics set to full. Very nice.
The only thing i had to do was open up the cd and run the setup.exe from the setup folder, instead of using the autorun executable. Didn't have to copy anything over, didn't have to manually set any compatibility modes, nothing. (I guess it automatically set the compatibility mode, cause in task manager it has a *32 after the process name.)
I'm running it under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with automatic updates up-to-date
P.S. why is this thread in two different sections?
Hrm, the only difference I see is that the OP has Home, and you have Pro. I didn't think any version of x64 7 worked for 16bit, but maybe I'm wrong?
Win7 pro (and up) have an XP/32 virtualized mode on supported CPUs. And that can run 16-bit apps.
It's not 100% MS's fault. x64 on both AMD (who came up w/ x64) and Intel chips can't do 16-bit code when running in 64-bit mode.

Whoa...
Was thinking....if you can't run the install on the internal disk, you probably won't be able to run the install on the external one.
BTW, just got my W7 upgrade disk in the mail today...

Found this good advice on upgrading on Amazon:
"If you have the Windows 7 upgrade, you can perform a clean install but skip the product key section and finish the install. Once completed, run the upgrade again from within Windows 7 but this time, enter the Windows 7 upgrade key and then activate Windows. This is one of a couple of workarounds, but is by far the easiest, especially for users who are not comfortable working in the registry. It's a bit time-consuming, but it's easy and it works.
I had been running the Windows 7 release candidate for 3 months and the full version 2 weeks before official release date. The experience convinced me to finally upgrade my Windows XP systems to 7. This review briefly touches upon some of the key features and enhancements of Microsoft's latest OS."

Red - you should be able to go to control panel -> system and enter your key and activate the Win 7 install without doing a second install. This has worked for me on several machines so far.
Centerline...
Cool, thanks, good to know. :-)
I'm fixing to install W7 upgrade now. It says I *have* to replace my XP install, but I'm going to try for a dual boot.
OK< all is "well"....EXCEPT....When I right click my Bzone exe and click properties(to change pathing for G20...the Paths are not shown in win 7 ??!!)
you dont change the path of the executable itself. for g6620 you change the path of the Shortcut on your desktop
"Finished" installing W7.
Explorer takes a little getting used to, but I like it so far. Very responsive :-)
I can even dual boot with XP Pro. :-)
BZ2 ran after I installed DX9.0c, too.
Now I just have to get all my shortcuts to work which I copied over from XP.
Have to reinstall VS2008, too, etc.
When you install Windows 7 over XP, all the files from XP (Program Files, Documents and Settings and Windows - all three folders, compelte) are copied over to a folder called Windows.old in your HD root. Very useful, if it does eat up HD space.
tried copying the shortcut to dektop....It copies over ok, but says it can't run, it is missing a FFC10p.dll from my computer
I find that in the root of the BZ2 install.
I sure don't like default girly color scheme. I want something that looks like rocks and trees.
There is a landscapes theme that looks pretty nice IMO until i get my old pics back up. And apparently you can change the background on the login screen pretty easily.

yeah, i get that error as well,
if i copy over the executable to the desktop, even in XP. Move the exe back into the folder and create a shortcut to it on the desktop. then modify the target in the shortcut you just made.

Rocks and trees aren't the most masculine of things either.

Check that ffc10p.dll exists in the target directory. That DLL is included in the initial install of BZ2, and also included in ta5/pb5.1 installs as that file changed slightly. The working directory (i.e. the "Start In" for the shortcut) might be wrong.

It is very easy to change a logon screen in vista. Just replace a single Bitmap. I'll find the directory sometime if you like.
Scarlet..say that again?
So...I copy the exe from the BZ 2 folder...onto desktop?
then?....Copy it?...or Drag it back into BZ 2 folder?...then modify it?
Explain it like ur explaining it to a 3rd grader....(with a keyboard)
Just place the shortcut on the desktop and modify it there.
I remembered there are /vista /novista commandline switches we can use so W7 doesn't try to use C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Battlezone II
Put bzone.exe back in its original folder if its not already there.(Battlezone 2 folder)
right click bzone.exe
scroll to send to
select desktop(create shortcut)
Done!
At least on XP, may be different on windows 7, in which case I'm of little use.
Main thing is you want to create a shortcut, do NOT move/copy bzone.exe, leave it in its home folder.
RD has it right, regardless of where I put the shortcut...it doesn't show "swotches"....it just shows location: :\ ( nada)
Just add the switch to the end of the command line (location) like this:
"C:\Program Files\Battlezone II\bzone.exe" /novista
and in the "location"...it will not allow you to edit/add...anything....it just has that lonely Location \:
Yup, you're looking at the properties of bzone.exe and not its shortcut.
Follow Vid's instructions a couple posts back and you'll be good to go.
Success....thanks to Vid/ SD/ RD...all contributed to a working 5.1 on win 7
Cool, and ZA, too. ;-)
Now, get out there so we can shoot you repeatedly. :-P
Oi, and me... :P
AHad is right...thanx to him as well....like always in the BZUniverse...it's a community thing..
I was told about windows 7 crashing in the Bz shell, i just tested it (win7 64bit) and while bz runs fine in hardware mode in a window, it crashes in full screen as soon as the shell is started. I haven't got VS2008 installed yet to see what's up. Must be something to do with exclusive mode.
BZ2 works okay in fullscreen on my end.
Try setting AllowModeChanges = 0 in render.cfg?
DX9 installed?
RD, that's BZ1, not BZ2...
