It was explained that this is a feature? Anyway, I always liked the smooth hills and ground in 1.2. You can run towards a hill and go high without worries.
Now when you try to go up a hill you bump into it, take 2 damage, and lose speed, and then become a easy target for the enemy because you fall slowly down with no chance of maneuvering yourself away. I'd like to see this feature gone.
Yeh, the hard terrain is a bastard to deal with and I wish it was gone as well. It does put a damper on trying to use terrain to escape with.
like most of us Ap, I'm no fan of it either, but there is a easy way to "live" with it, just before you hit the base of the hill, pull the nose up slightly and you get the "ski-jump" effect. It ain't perfect, but it's better than the clunk.
I don't like taking damage from terrain.
Is there anything to be said in its favour as it makes the game more aggresive? However, as it reduces human skill (the way we play now), maybe not.
its actually takes more skill now becuase you can't just drive into the ground and expect it to just let you slide, more like bz1 now. Terrain actually means something now.
With some of the players already having a hard time dealing with some of the ship physics and trying to escape for most feels "noobish", I tend to agree that having that hard terrain does make it hard to go up cliffs and to slide/hover along the terrain walls at a decent speed. Yes, hover is gone, but that doesn't mean these hover ships should be ground bound. Simply trying to take to the air to gain some altitude to rainbow a turret is sometimes a nuicance cuz the ground may damage you as you use a hill to get some air and disorient and throw the speed of your off.
Skidding along a slope going up does not follow physics and is a bug and has been fixed, think about it, if you drove your car at a wall, it would not start to drive up it, it would crash right into it.
But cars don't hover. These are advanced future vehicles, with anti-gravity field generators... They should not easily crash into terrain.
I agree, they should repulse as an inverse square of the distance away from the surface. That is, the closer they get the harder they should push away...
I HATED the ground damage in Tribes2. It was nuts, and very unrealistic. I'd rather not see it in BZ2 either.

I'd vote for no damage from ground.
Seems a bit pointless, gives no improvement to the game,
and detracts from playing enjoyment.
First off, I DIDN'T IMPLEMENT THIS. Thank you for not making a personal issue.
But, I'd have thought the "vets" would have loved something that makes them think, and use more skill to differentiate themselves from newbies. Hah.

i dont get it - u doing stuff on pourpose to ruin the fun?
I *like* getting damage from the terrain. It makes sense. The hover things are on the bottoms, not on the sides. So you're gonna hit a hill. Plus, if you're going fast, why wouldn't you hit the hill? Hitting the ground is gonna hurt a bit. Duh.
It adds another element to the game. And like GSH said, its another skill to learn, like BZ FeebleEffort has.
I agree...it takes more finesse to slide along the side of a hill now. Plowing nose down into the side of the hill and flying up it always seemed cheesy to me. Now you have to orient your ship correctly to do it.
Its another way for advanced players to differentiate themselves from the herd.
It does not add anything to the game... it takes away from the game.
BZ2 is complex enough without having lag and resynchs destroying the vehicle you are piloting.
Nathan you know I agree with you waaaay more than I disagree with you, and I have never made it personal when I disagree with anyone... I just disagree.
You don't get the thunk if you hit it right. Like Speedy said, that's the way it should behave. It doesn't matter what is holding you off the ground, wheels or hovering. If you run into somthing head on, it's gonna hurt.
Point yer nose up and use the up thrusters more and you'll be sailing.
u dont have to make the game so realistic...
and if u do wanna talk about realsim think about the gravity... and some maps are sands - u shouldnt get hit by hitting SAND (e.g dunes)
I like the damage too, plus if you angle things just right, you will not take damage and still go flying high into the air :D
Ok, this is a video game. Um, as in not real, um, yeh, hovering kewl, smashing into terrain trying to run away ummmm, bad. :D
An M1A1 Abrams does not take damage from just driving around.
but then again they train m1a1 drivers not to run stight into the side of a hill.
wouldnt a poll be usefull here? :P
although it "supports" my opnion i think if there is struggle around it a poll wont make ppl happy...
leaving it the old way will be better cause think about it... u lived it so far - stick with it so some others can be happy as well... try looking at it from objective point and not just your side although it turned out to be supoorting my side this time...
Well SilverB1rd, an Abrams can go over jumps without taking damage, a Sabre cannot. Not to mention that the Sabre is hundreds of years more advanced than the Abrams.
The MBT should not be taking damage from normal piloting functions. It is bad real world design, and it is bad game design. It was never in BZ1 1.0, BZ1, 1.4, BZ2 1.0, BZ2 1.2, and it should not be in BZ 1.3. Plain and simple.
Hitting sand will still hurt. I mean, try hitting water real fast. It hurts more than if you hit concrete, seriously.
Perhaps it should be a map option but if thats not possible, my vote is with it in the game. "Newbs" will hit the terrain while running while "vets" won't hit the terrain with certain skills making them run faster.
if a reasonable attemt to stop your fall with jump thruster and correct ship aligment still allows you to take dammage then I think we need to fix the jump thruster.

actually im on your side, id rather there wasn`t ground damage in 1.3 like the versions before it, its something caracteristic to the game, its one of the things that make it diferent, i my opinion not even the pilots should be hurt by the ground. The one good thing i see aboutthis is that ships dont go ''into the ground'' anymore wich looks better but still id rather the old ground back.
as for the poll, well i just wanted a democratic solution for the issue.

Vehicles with the technology present in BZ2 (or BZ1 for that matter) should not be taking damage from the ground.
Damage should come from the opponant in this game. Vehicles not taking damage in EVERY previous version of BZ was no BUG!
Its no longer a bug, its a feature now.
Nice how you completely missed the point Speedy. Also, it is not a feature now either, as ground damage is in, when it never was before.
Not taking damage from terrain was an "on purpose" not a mistake or bug.
It will if you drive it into the side of a rock. :-p And sand will stop you every time. Scrape some paint off too. ;-)
I like the new collision damages in some ways, particularly when you land on buildings (ie: bridges, sbay), you no longer bounce 60m in the air and take ~6% damage each bounce.
but I agree with MowerMan as far as land damages go, trying use a hill to escape while on ~5 health from that base run you did will probably kill you, when it takes a little bit of the Fun Factor out of the game, it doesnt really matter how much paint is scraped off.
That's exactly where I'm coming from ZA. When I'm escaping in the red, I will use the crashing into terrain to give me a very unpredictable path... Having that kill you in the end is a bummer to me!
After playing a bit with the patch (I discovered that BZ2 runs OK on my laptop), the damage isn't too bad, but I will still like to see no terrain damage. Crashing into building and other craft is ok with me to cause damage. Seem appropriate.

Yes...So Nathan is fully vindicated on this...he is correct(I'll give him this time) The idea of ground damage was Kens . Perhaps Ken will be willing to "fix" it. But that is his area of responsiblity Not Nathans.
You don't get any damage if it's done right.
i still didnt understand how it works...
ive been playing a strat in quarry... and running on the hills in middle
sometimes i got hit sometimes not... i tried to understand what im doing wrong but when i tried to get hit i didnt.... and when i tried to do it alright i didnt get hit only few times... i havnt figured out why.. cause i think im doing the same all the time but sometimes getting hit and sometimes not..
its annoying... i prefer taking it away
Small collision damage makes perfect sense. It's a good improvement.
(the only possible nuance I could think of, is for scion ships that have statis shield, they could still get damage but perhaps half as much as unshielded units, but such a thing would not even be worth coding)

Hey, look at me, I am driving my scout on dunes and as I turn I send sand flying into my enemy's canopy, so he is blind and I punch his ass with my miniguns... in that way I won MANNY battles...
SAND DOES *NOT* EXIST, IT IS JUST A 3D PLANE WITH A *TEXTURE* ON IT.
I would like to see a game, any game that actually HAS sand.
some race games has... u remeber big red? aha good ol game... if u drive outside the road or do a turn or i dont remeber it send sands back and those behind cant see well
I don't really notice bumping into hills too much...must be my style of piloting.
It does make sense to take damage for piloting errors. If it makes it impossible to run home with 5% health, start running when you have 10% health, or don't crash into things. If you want to screw up the path prediction by ramming stuff like a meth-addled wombat, be prepared to take a little damage for it.
I played an mpi yesterday and I don't remember getting hurt by the land either. I got pretty good air on some of little hills too. The one thing that is annoying about the land is when you're a pilot. You're supposed to be slowly coming to the ground and all. And it is pretty slow but then you hit the ground and your guy is like ahhhhh and you get hurt. I mean its not like he came down real fast or he didn't bend his knees when he hit the ground...... hey wait a second! He doesn't bend his knees when he hits the ground. Jeez pretty stupid pilot. But it still is annoying getting hurt for that.
I must say that I do like not bouncing anymore when I hit the service pad.
It's still an awesome upgrade! Thx! :)
"Flare" as you hit the ground. That is, hit Forward or something right before you hit, or the whole time if you want to come down slowly.
- Switched pilot's rate of descent back to control magnitude. EasyTarget
pointed out that jump would allow easy air-snipes. [Ken]

sometimes AI pilots stuck their vehicles into hills, or go under water and die...
sometimes the AI path is very strange.
I still can climb a vertical slope in a Sabre and not take noticable damage, so I guess it isn't a big deal.
In general though, I don't think the terrain should do any damage to you in these kinds of vehicles. It is not piloting errors, as it never has been piloting errors in any version of BZ. You could be dogfighting and back into terrain and that could be the "killing blow". There are probably an infinite number of scenarios one could imagine where the terraine yeilds the killing blow by dumb luck (good or bad, depending if you won or lost the fight). This is one game where depending on "luck" is minimized, and should be.
This issue was broached in the development of BZ by the full development team. The issue of whether the ships should have "damage effecdts" (slow them down when they are damaged). This idea was also dismissed because it creates a "snowball effect".
I am so verty suprised how many people want to change EVERYTHING about BZ2 willy-nilly like no thought went into it in the first place!
Quote from: eon5sometimes AI pilots stuck their vehicles into hills, or go under water and die...

AI Pilots have a set life span to prevent them from collection at any certain place for too long. one game i was playing started to lag badly so i drove over to the enemy base & found 30-40 pilots having a party bouncing off the walls of the service bay to get into a ship that was on the other side. one mortar killed them all at once & my kill meter sky rocketed & spamming the chat window with a ton of Pilot killed Messages. :dead:
Strange, I haven't even noticed it yet. Then again, I haven't played for a couple of hours maximum, and not a single good old team strat game yet (preferably quarry, where this effect would probably have been seen? ;)
The thing I'm currently horrified about future of BZ2 is that 1.3 is already dividing people. There are (too) many who don't really even consider updating from 1.2 to 1.3, I think they're too afraid of losing all their skills in current version. Well, it's understandable, if last patch was several years ago, it probably has bound most players to the good'n'old. What I hope would be that people understand that this really IS a patch, and every experienced computer game player should know that updating is Good in most cases. In my opinion, it definitely is in this case. Why do you guys even want to stick in the old, wouldn't it be much more fun to learn the new tricks and stuff in 1.3... doesn't it sound fun? No? Too bad :(
---
Well, I decided to go and test the terrain damage before posting this, and as far as I am concerned, it isn't really noticeable. Actually, at least in quarry, if you bump on those barriers surrounding the middle, it gives you TREMENDOUS boost to vertical speed for a cost of 1-2 percent damage in scout. Flying made easy if you ask me :)
And really, I don't see what the big whining about this feature is, as far as I've seen, it doesn't affect gameplay that much. Perhaps it's a pity, there are probably not many new tactics going to develope around this feature... expect maybe the 'jumping' in (at least) quarry ;)
Btw, got access violation earlier today when joining a game, is there some great place to send a report? Didn't see anything in readmes or so, well, ahem, gonna look for info later, now I gotta go. Fast really :)
