Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: APCs r evil on April 23, 2004, 07:51:12 PM
Instead of the popper aiming directly at the end of the target lead after it (for lack of a better term, pops) why not leave it so it still aims at the target lead but make it track anything in the area like FAFs or Stingers do. This would be the most helpful on maps with rough terrain since the target lead is usually nowhere near where it would be when the air target stops traveling over the bump. And it would still be easy enough to dodge in DMs since it would act like a dumbfire missile.

I have no idea how hard this would be to implement though so its just a thought.

That would kinda kill the idea behind the popper though. Its purpose is meant to be a radar signature guided rocket embedded into a mortar supposedly. The idea of it being more of a dumbfire missile just doesn't seem to capture the actual radar guided part much.

Good point but is there any way to make it radar guided or lock on like shadowers do?

popers are forbideen in some places because alot of people complain its "hard to hit"
i can dodge popers, and persoanly have no problem with popers ingame....
but alot of people, espicley dm hosters which arent vets cant dodge popers themselves and sais poper is not allowed as a rule

making it like a faf / stinger would've even make it worse...
and popers arent used in a strat anyways... ur better off with howitzer in *most* cases...

popoers barly shoot bomber down as well...

scion anti-bomber defence is a jammer.

Well thats true but personally i would prefer to do some damage to the enemy's scrap storage rather than just stop air attacks with something that wont hurt them. (BTW love the new jammer :D ) But i also think what DF said in some other post about them removing the paint from a painted target is a good idea, for example, I was in a 4 way allied strat once and had a bunch of stuff in the middle, it had already been bombed once so i decided to put a jammer there ASAP unfortunately while the cons was going there the enemy's ally attacked it the cons survived but apparently it was painted somehwere along the way so once it built the jammer the other enemy bombed it (it was still in the center BTW) i thought the bomber was going to my base so i went off that way but i found out the hard way that jammers didnt remove paint which IMO doesnt make much sense. :s

well, painting is supposts to be a satlalite lock, whick would most likley be therman or visual, not some type or radar.  It is supposts to interfere with radar and targeting, but it doesnt say anything about interfering about visual/heat detection.

Yes, i always thought painting was a Satalite lock.....

Which reminds me...mabey painting should only be doable if you have a relay bunker / whatever ?

Would give the scions a bit of a disadvantage early game though...well..thats what being scion is all about :d

target should be disabled or just 'deleted' when ur near a jammer OR red field
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: Spawn on April 25, 2004, 08:54:59 PM
um...doesnt red feld only affect a single ship?  And what does it do anyway?  I could never figure that out.

It clears the radar signature of a ship so radar locking weapons like Poppers and Comet Cruise missiles can't lock onto the ship. Its only a personal disabling of radar signatures though, not an actual radar jammer.

It stops people from (T)argetting you too. It's powerful.

It's spelled "satellite" folks and did it ever occur to you that with all this wonderful technology why both sides never ever downed those satellites to prevent radar communications and targeting functions (such as in the startup movie)?  :D

I thought about it once or twice but never really hard. But now im wondering where the Surface to Orbit missiles are.(At least i think that's what they're called.)

BTW what was that cannon the warrior shot the gun tower with in the intro movie?
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: Spawn on April 26, 2004, 01:39:14 AM
no, i meant a satlalite, its like a normal satellite, but it is magic and cannot be destroyed...ever...
the cannon was magic burst, like magic blast, but in a different mode

that movie does so much injustice to the actual bz2 game...after watching it I almost just quit the game right then :)

Riiiiight.   :D

Probably some form of level-charging assault ball plasma (reminiscent of BFG's).  And an insane weap I'd think, after hitting the GT with one blast, heh.

The warrior wasn't even in assault mode and took out the tower in one shot, no justice at all...
But I love the blue tower plasma with the little sparks and pops, much more interesting than the solid, nothing interesting green plasma.

i would say the warioir shoots assult mag.... 1 hit kills a gt and its 1 'ball' (shot, w/e u wanna call it)
not few like shots by combat mag

red field wont let people target you ---> some missiles cant lock on you
+ u wont be seen on radar... great for sneakin up on people who kills a pool then u come behind and before they notice u already killed them...

BUT the problem with red field is that if one manages to target you ull be targeted... although red field is on.... --> ruining the elemt of surprise red field gives you...

i sometimes uses red field to sneak up on a tank and kill it.. but once im targeted the red field becomes useless...

should be fixed IMO

Well yeah, the movie doesn't really quite mirror the details we see ingame.  Pandi would have asked for changes in the SIG CG if they wanted to capture what was in the game design, but I don't think that was their priority at the time.  For the GT, you can always mod that so it looks like the fx in the movie. Seems I've led another thread off topic again.   :)

Did someone say Orbital Satellite Laser? I just got an idea for a new weapon.  :)

EDIT: Double post. Satellite internet is being a bastard.

EDIT again: I wish I could use one of those OSL thingys on my ISP.

If targeted swop ships with a team m8 , u'll guess when ur targetted as every move you make u find 3-4 enemy wings coming at you.

1 red fielded ship = sucks..

im usualy cmding... so i get myself 2 red field tanks and just swap after each time i visit base... its faster recharge as well.... but could've been nice if red field take the paint off.. what i think it should do anyways...

How about this...Jammers dont get rid of paint...but red field does.

Doable?
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: PhoeniX-FlamE on April 27, 2004, 02:30:32 AM
i think jammer should for that area... but its probably 2 complacited... i dont think red field will be a problem though
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: Spawn on April 27, 2004, 03:55:44 AM
the thing about painting is it is meant to last untill the ship is killed or you stop it for some reason...maybe have it just wear off after two or three minutes?  So you need to keep painting them.
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: PhoeniX-FlamE on April 27, 2004, 10:59:57 AM
the whole point of red-field is untargetable, invisable by all means of radar
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: Jwk the Hemp Monkey on April 27, 2004, 05:16:56 PM
if the jammer stopped paints, that would be to harsh...

however, i think redfield should do it. Is it really hard to make two types of radar jamming?

Okay I have a question, how can a scout paint a Jammer by radar if a Jammer is supposed to stop radar contact and stuff?
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: Bull Dog on May 20, 2004, 07:58:36 PM
The scout can paint a jammer because the jammer's jam range is lets say 350m the scout Radar range is 400m.  At 351m to 400m the jammer can't jam the scout's radar. Therefore it is free to paint anything it likes.

Edited to fix Grammer and Spelling

Post by: Aegeis on May 20, 2004, 08:19:58 PM
That doesn't make sense.  The jammer is supposedly emitting a field of disruption?  I'm guessing.  If that field extends to 350m like you say then no form of radar should be able to penetrate that field.  Damn I wish I was fixing radars and stuff when I was in the Navy so I can see if that can be true or not or at least have experience to back up my post.

For starters this is a game not real life.  And the jammers dont jam radar tramissions/pings they jam the the units emmitting the pings.  I'm only stating my understarding of how the jammer workes.

Bull Dog you sound right but Aegeis and I are thinking about this the same way, which is why I asked in the first place, because it didn't make sense to me.

Bull dog is correct if you're talking about 1.2. This was fixed to make much more sense in 1.3.

I haven't played with the 1.3 jammer yet I think I'm going to need to though.  Sorry about any confusion I may haved caused
Title: Just a thought on poppers
Post by: DarkFox on May 21, 2004, 02:58:46 AM
In 1.3 it effectively creates a circle on the battlefield, through which no 'targetting lines' can go through. Draw a line from you to your target. If any part of the jammer's field lies anywhere on this line, then the targetting will be prevented.

Ask Gary. I think he did naval communications.  :)

shouldnt we all get the more important point of how exactly your ships hover and are made of living metal (if i were biometal i would eat whoever tried to pilot me :D ) instead of talking about how the friggin jammer actually works?  And couldnt there be a way for tanks to figure out the angle needed to mortar things, but that would make things too easy, wouldnt it?
