Maybe if you and another teamate finish a dogfight away from your base somewhere and your teamate looses his unit but you still have yours, maybe you could be able to "give your teamate a lift" and be able to carry him on your unit. Instead of killing your teamate when you drive over him it would pick him up instead. He could be given a backwards view or something else. He would just press abandon in order to get off. I understand that this would be virtually impossible to implement and cause much more trouble than its worth, and if I could do it myself I would, but you cannot tell me that wouldnt be cool...
Quote from: Arcanethat wouldnt be cool...
*lol* :D
Actually...In FE there is a dll scripted mission where tanks have to 'pick up' survivors. Only one space in each tank next to the cockpit ey!.
I think what one could do is have a button which when pressed and touching another vechile, such as as a tank, would make the pilot disapear and then be in the 'cockpit' point of view, with no control.
lol @ aegeis, its a double neg ya?
"but you cannot tell me that wouldnt be cool... "
so it makes perfect sence, and if u want to see some sort of hitching a ride. See Halo the pc game, with the Heavy Tank(scorpian) 4 soldiers could take up position on the track pods. jeeps held 1 driver, 1 side passenger that could shoot out with his gun and throw nades, plus a rear gunner that used a mounted minigun or 3 barrel rocket launcher.
There was also a medium Tank in halo that got cut going from mac to xbox, thus it also didnt make it from xbox to pc. that and a hand held minigun and guided rockets that didnt make it from mac to Xbox, and thus not to pc either. fagz@ microsoft! gg bling.
Yes now that you mentioned it I do remember that mission with the tanks. Could you take that same script and slip it into the regular units also?
If you were to implement that script with real players that really wouldn't work. In that mission for FE, when a tank came into contact with a pilot, the pilot would vanish from the world and the tank would be translated into a different unit (hence the different name). The actual player who would be hitching a ride is actually removed from the world - exactly the same as being dead :P
They don't nessesarily have to become a new unit, I belive DLL has the capability to rename units ingame. As far as transporting units back to base, I know DLL has the capability to make a pilot become "attached" to a unit like an APC (As in one of BSer's missions) so maybe its possible to use this ability to do this.
I think that would also be a great way to train newer players, so they could learn how to evade or travel faster, or just get a better view on what to do
If GSH or Ken programmed it properly, it would mean that the 'passenger' would never have to give any infomation *back* to the server. He/she would simply recive it....and be viewing it though the viewpoint of the controller pilot. You could even have a 'switch controls', so that the passenger would become the pilot, and the pilot the passenger.
Anyway, the passenger should just 'shift' into the vechile as if he or she was picked up via an empty one.
maybe have the pilot dragged behind in a net
Spawn...Lmao
Hemp, you could assign the switch to a hotkey and if the original pilot pressed the key it would automatically switch the contol over to the added pilot. But I think that the original pilot should be able to take back control. Would it make much difference if the original pilot would be able to kick the second pilot from the unit? Its not like hes hurting anything.
Yes it would be good. What if you have picked up a newbie, and want to place him inside of an empty, and he doesnt know what the '' get out of secondary seat'' button is.
You press it for him :P
This may not be possible with the bz2 engine. I know, because I was told, the bz2 code is a mess. Attempting to do something like this could damage bz2 in a complex way, or in a simple way as in causing resyncs. Only the programmers will know how much work would be required in doing something like this.
just the act of being able to pick up pilots, AI and human, and then dropping them off, would be good enough. The 'picked up ' human could view from the cockpit, or f2 mode, or whatever is easiest.
This would be a cool feature, but it may not be possible without major modifications to the bz2 engine. If major modifications are required, I don't see the feature getting implemented. After the initial reaction to 1.3, any chance of new features are slim. I can only see bug fixes getting implemented from now on, if anything.
Well Im glad the idea was atleast considered and put out there for furture mods then
" know DLL has the capability to make a pilot become "attached" to a unit like an APC (As in one of BSer's missions)"
isnt that city assault, also wasnt that made by sfp sonic? not bs'er?
Urban Assault, with the APC that carries the player's pilot was made by BSer. I know mission two, in FE, attaches the stranded ai pilots to ai sabres controlled by the player.
From what I've seen, I believe there is a way to have ships pick players up and possibly even switch roles (pilot + passenger). Let me work on it, I have a general idea on how to do both ideas but it might need a simple new function for the DLL to make things easier and not a hack haha. But hey... whatever works! :D
Thank you Speedy
I have made a prototype DLL. The mod is called GNR, short for, Give the Newbs a Ride. :D After all, if you need to be extracted from enemy territory because you got waxed to bits, you truly are a newb ;).
Functionality: If a human is a pilot, he/she can walk up (15m) to a friendly human-piloted vehicle and automatically jump aboard. That way, you can ask your teammates to come pick you up (just run them over, they snap on). You can then get off as well. It allows you to freely look around while you are getting a ride. In addition, your pilot can die if the ship gets caught in an explosion but getting hit by minis+chains is ok. Your vunerability to explosions is a trade-off I guess. You get a relatively safer and faster ride on a ship than alone.
If the ship's pilot hops out, the passenger will take charge of the ship. Then the pilot that hopped out will be the passenger. This would act as role-switching however it is untested yet.
However, there are a few major problems with it:
1) It requires mwf 1 or it sucks hahaha.
2) I found a bug: SetVelocity() does not work.
3) It is an extremely rough ride.
4) Minor screen artifacts.
Now I have a few questions:
1) Would anyone mind if the ride really sucks even if it works? I'm talking about massive warp for the single pilot BUT not for anyone else.
2) Here's a neat little feature: would you like onboard pilots to act as engineers and heal your ship at a small rate? This might act as an incentive for people to pick people up and remember that it has to be a human player. (1/10 of a service truck?)
Right now, it only really works with 1.3. In 1.2 its even more warpy but it works haha.
The way it works is that if you get near a ship, you're position will be set to the position of the ship. You are then litterally inside the ship; luckily, as far as I've tested, collision detection doesn't kick in for some reason. You can't be harmed by non-explosive weapons. However if the ship dies, chances are you will too (I'll make it for sure later). Thing is that since the SetVelocity function does absolute squat you get set at the ship's position at every mwf/10 second intervals (ex: mwf = 3; 3/10 of a second). And since there is no GetVelocity function, that above is kinda useless too. If the Get/SetVelocity functions worked, your pilot's movements would sync with the ship's and you will get a (hopefully if I'm right) 100% smooth ride.
What I wanted to do is send the pilot off way, way off map and have the camera viewport to change to the ship's. It would be smoother for sure and you'll be invunerable to explosions but it doesn't work at all. The camera functions seems to only function in single-player mode, oh well.
If anyone still wants to see the mod and that it will actually be used, then please say so. I will also add a feature that can turn off the functionality of this mod so that it will essentially act as normal 1.2/1.3. That way, the server can choose whether or not giving people rides are cool. And, I could also make the heal-feature optional too (off by default). Once its done I will provide the source code to any mod (like FE) wanting the functionality of GNR.
If people still want it, I'll have to submit a few DLL bug reports and a function request to GSH before it is really usable.
I'm off for a week to Denver on Monday so I don't have access to bz2 there but I still might have the Internet.
Thank you Speedy, I could have never done that on my own. You know Id like to see it. I think the idea of them slightly healing you is a great idea too.
Quote from: ArcaneWell Im glad the idea was atleast considered and put out there for furture mods then
Indeed the SXDS Mod,
Btw. no im not dead! & I still play!

Sounds good, i would like to see it. Doesnt matter if it is a 'bumpy' ride, as long as it is 'a' ride. Nothing to unrealistic though ,like the passengers head popping out the end of a cannon.
Yes, passengers must die if the ship explodes.
I see problems with synching. Plus, how does SetVelocity not work? It seems to always work fine when I use it...
No, you cannot change the viewpoint to be the same as another player.
I'd like to be able to walk around inside the Dropship and look out the windows at those soaring birds and the roaming dinosaurs as we land. Having a snack bar or even Shabayev stewardesses would be nice too.
Quote from: Jwk the Hemp MonkeyNothing to unrealistic though ,like the passengers head popping out the end of a cannon.
Maybe we could use the pilot as human munitions?
I have a pilots head model. It shouldnt be too hard to put that sucker on a bouncebomb and fire it away. Heck, I could even do
xplVehicle = "xprsxpl"
and have like lots of blood shooting out of the barrel when it fires. :D
EDIT: Ah, sorry Speedy for going OT. I didnt see your post and thought this was a spamming topic.
Lol, yeah! That would be like great go ahead. Hehe.
-WhiteDove
dont forget to add that to the muzzle blast also
Anyone remember that there's a 'human cannon' as part of the COW map?
Lags you a little when fired, possibly due to the scream it makes when exiting the barrel.
-Av-
Ooh... human cannons... :P
Make it do as much damage as a blast
And make it leave a little blood splat on the targets windsheild
actually, that could be possible with a taground...maybe clog the engines :)
And if the target is a treaded unit it leaves a little trail of gore

Can you give us the link to the GNR mod speedy
I dont think a sticky bullet (whatever they are called) can emit any effects. If it could, i'd imagine a draw_planar emit could be used to render a blood trail on the ground. :)
you can make bullet just look like a bloodsplatter, so when it hits your ship, a bloodsplatter "appears"
Wouldn't it be cool if you could board an enemy unit if you lost your own.
You know, when an enemy approaches, you could jump out of nowhere, jump up onto his ship, and snipe him out.
Then ride off into the horizon with the spoils of war.
Just kidding.
lol the other day I was playing some good ol' FE.
I was using the Hadean Antenna or whatever (1.2 Satellite...ugh...)
Anyways...
My ship was just outside of it...
I decided I need to kill some things myself : )
It was hilarious.
At that exact moment a pilot just happened to be running to my ship (an enemy one)
I started spring/jumping towards it at the same time...
He was closer but I could move faster.
I got closer...closer...closer...he was so close...we were neck in neck...
When...
SQUASH.
Game Over.
Lol I love FE : )
you should've sniped him

That's it, I'm putting the sabre tank in Halo 2. :D
Or the bulldog...
Speaking of which, doen anyone know a good cheap mod-chip?
Alright! That's what I'm talking about.! :D
this seems like a very good idea. since i myself am a noob, this would create a good learning experience like if i was ridding with a vet. i could learn a few things. plz make this mod work. :-D
Another good idea is for the player to call for help, and the commander or another player (even the player himself) sends an APC (or something) to pick the player up, which then returns to the base and drops the play off.
it may be possible to do this but i think you would have to pretty much make a new bz2 engine or make a different game like war zone bz2 or something but you would need pandamics permission to make a BattleZone3
or the alternitive ask pandamic to do that feature in battle zone 3
Is this project still up for discussion? I would be more than willing to help test anything that needs to be tested. I would really like to see this implemented in a later version or in a mod. 1.3.2 Anyone?

hey version 1.3.2 in that version can you keep multiplayer settings from resetting and thats pretty much all i want
lol viperus brought this topic back from the dead :P.
and pandemic wont make a BZ3
1.3.2?
^(this is a decimal, usually only one appears :D but hey, its yalls version)
Heh, don't you love it when ancient topics are ressurected :P
You could probably do this without the use of a DLL simply by using 'Magnetshell' rounds and having it fire a continuous salvo. I actually got something similar like this to work accidently when toying around with Flight, but it was too cumbersome to use properly (you couldn't fire a weapon at the same time as flying, etc)
There is one major issue with this though:
You can pull anything along. not just pilots :/
this was dont with dll already, but nobody cared cause its not very useful...
Thank you. I was going to tell them about 8 hours ago but I was busy. Look on page two.
Heh, I did some testing with the magnetshell idea a while back (in multi)
was rather amusing to see a Warrior dive down onto an enemy unit, swoop up and head straight up into the air, carrying the enemy unit with it, so high that he couldn't even see the floor anymore :P. You can do it with enemy pilots too, but they'll usually collide with the ship and die very quickly, or fall out of the magnetic radius
Fun, but there's no chance in hell it'd ever be practical towards gameplay in any way whatsoever :P
