Hi gang -
I have been playing BZII with the 1.3 patch (and Core66 maps) for quite a while now, and when playing games in Instant Mode (against the computer), or in Multiplayer mode (hoping others will join), I often get the computer to lock up after maybe 20 or 30 minutes. The only thing I can do is to reboot - forget Cntl Alt Del.
I run XP on a Gigabyte K8NS Pro MB with an Athelon 64 2 Gig CPU with a Ledteck A6600 GT video card, with resolution set to 1024 x 768 32. I only have 512 megs of RAM, so that might be part of the problem.
Anyway, does anyone have a clue as to why this might be happening?
Also - on a different note, I've read many posts over the years where people print out a file that displays what might have caused a problem with the game. My question is, what is this file called, and where is it located?
Thanks -

That would be the Battlezone.log in the BZ root folder.
Edit: Do you have a software firewall? (you'd better!)
Try doing an Alt-Tab to see if there is a firewall dialog box behind the BZ screen. Sometimes a dialog box will pop up behind the BZ screen asking if you want to allow a connection and it will hang your session If you don't respond.
RD is absolutely right, BZ wont recognize the new window and appropriately minimize in XP. Alt-Tab rarely works for me though, I always have to use 'windows key' + L to goto the user screen and log back in. If none of that works, does the light go on and off if you hit the numlock key? Thats about the best way I know of to test on the fly if a comp is completley frozen or not.
Also, try closing as many programs as you can before starting up BZ. You may try running it on a lower resolution.(but with that comp, I doubt that's the problem  )

Heheh, I seriously doubt it, I run on 256Mb DIMM and mine works fine, specially in 1.3, FE freezes on me alot tho...
XP + 256mb of ram = big bottleneck.
yeah well money would help there ;)
You can also use Alt-Enter to put BZ into windowed mode or Alt-Esc to switch to the new window.
I like the NumLock light thing.

Well, I'm glad it's not just me :)
I, too, have been having the hard freezing, but this has happened during LAN games (clearly, unfirewalled), and is rather annoying- especially when we are winning :D
The whole LAN is running high-end machines, 2.5+ GHz, 1024-2048 MB RAM- so that clearly isn't the main problem...
does battlezone.log say anyhting?
any error messages ingame?
Thanks Spawn, Red Devil and ScarleTomato for your suggestions.
I'll try playing another game and wait for the lock up and then try the screen switch trick and the num lock thing - be back later.
Note: I saw this line about 2/3rds down the screen - Does it mean anything?
"WARN|IControl | icontrol:2976 |08:38:31|18656 |Unknown Justification [HCENTRE] for [Count]"
And, also this one:

Mother's Helper I don't see any errors. Based on the last line, bz2 shut down the way it should.
QuoteSystem shutdown normally
Yours ended with that line which indicates that bz2 did not AV. That will not show up if the game freezes. When I freeze, I usually see something resembling the following.
QuoteDIAG|GLOBAL | runcodes:153 |08:52:30|858031 |[Main] Entering run code
.
Red Devil posted a good example of an AV. That is pretty much what one looks like. They always begin with [ E X C E P T I O N ] and end with Entering critical shutdown.
Hey guys -
I found out that this freeze up problem does NOT happen when I am playng single player maps - only when I am in multiplayer mode.
Speaking of multiplayer - has anyone tried (like I have), starting a multiplayer game and then "hanging up" the modem/DSL/Cable? I find that the multiplayer games offer much more variety and challenge than the instant games, but I am wondering if disconnecting from the Gamespy server might contribute to the freeze up problem? Perhaps there is a better way of playing multiplayer games - any ideas?
Mother's Helper
If you are the only person in the game, it should be treated like single player without the ability to save. Once you get a joiner, the multiplayer code kicks in. Until then, bz2 runs as if you are playing single player.
I guess this is kinda old by now..but oh well!
Quote from: Bull DogXP + 256mb of ram = big bottleneck.
I ran a PentiumIII 550 on an Intel Motherboard, that had a 4mb :nuke: INTERGRTED :nuke: graphics card, and it ran perfectly, well... as perfectly as windows can run...but thats irrlevant...heh heh...:)
and it played BZ like a charm, if I retained mid level setting graphics :
MH, what happens when you choose Multiplayer, is that BZ immediately tries to access the Gamespy server and get the list of BZ games from it.
If your firewall is blocking Battlezone's (bzone.exe) access to the internet, your session will just hang and you will
not be able to even start up a new MP game.
Again,
Check your software firewall settings!!!
Which firewall are you using???
if you are using Kerio, there were two modes selectable when istalling it. Depending upon which one you (or someone) chose, your incoming connections will automatically be *blocked* and you will *not* be notified:
If you are using Kerio, check to see if Enable Network security module and Enable System security module are selected.
Here is a section of the Kerio help file explaining it:
QuoteSimple ââ,¬â€ in this mode, the firewall enables all outgoing traffic and blocks any incoming communication. All network interfaces of the Kerio Personal Firewall host are automatically assigned to the Internet zone refer to chapters Rules for Applications and Trusted Area). The system security module is also disabled (see chapter System Security).
According to these settings, the firewall never asks user and follows the default rules (the Ask action is not used by default). This behavior can be changed by modification of system and network security modules.
Note: The only exception is confirmation of dial-up numbers (see chapter Checking of dialed telephone numbers) ââ,¬â€ users are always asked if a new number is dialed or when a telephone number is changed, regardless of the current firewall mode.
The Simple mode is set by default. It is recommended especially to beginners and users who cannot perform the initial configuration immediately after the installation.
Advanced (autodidactic mode) ââ,¬â€ whenever an unknown communication is detected or an unknown application is started, the firewall asks user which action is to be taken and whether a rule would be created for this action. This way, step by step, a specific firewall configuration for a host and a user is being created.
If the Advanced mode is selected, the Kerio Personal Firewall detects active network interfaces of the computer on which it is installed upon the first startup. For each interface, the user is asked whether the interface is connected to a trustworthy network or not. For details, refer to chapter Detection of new network interfaces.
The Advanced mode sets the same behavior as all previous versions of the Kerio Personal Firewall. This mode is recommended to experienced users and to those users who want to use detailed custom settings.
If you are using Kerio, in the Network Security page, there will either be a red X, a yellow question mark, or a green check mark in the various colums there. the red X means "deny", the yellow question mark means "ask" and the green check mark means "allow" . If it is set to ask, a dialog box will appear asking if you want to allow the connection. It will also have a checkbox asking if you want a rule to be created.
If you have the Zone Alarm, there is an option tab where you can select the levels of notification.
Should be similar for Norton, etc.
Signed,
Mother's Helper Helper
MH, Are you clicking on the "internet thru gamespy" button to change your game to "LAN" when you play solo?
Is it all maps that freeze up, or is it just G66 maps?
I've frequently had G66 maps freeze up at 20 or 40 minutes depending on when the first wave of Interceptor's is due to show up. I believe it sometimes can't make them and freezes. What I noticed is that if you stick with only the G66 maps, you will pretty much get a freeze just about every map the first time...but if after the freeze, you go back and replay the same map it's ok, and subsequent plays are ok too, untill you go play non G66 maps..then you may have to go through the whole process over again!
And I also enjoy playing the MPI alone...so just turn joins off if you can remember at the start :D
Just saw this...
[Bonks MH about the head and shoulders with a Nerf(TM) Bat]
No wonder it's locking up on you!!!

If you don't want any joiners in your game just set the player limit to 1. That will let you keep your F8-10 slots open.
you jsut could do lan only and people cant join, or type /gsoff and your game wont be reported to gamespy
that may be a problem, but probablly not...
Red Devil -
I am not using a software firewall at this time, so that is not the problem.
I tried using Zone Alarm at one time when I still had Win98SE, but it slowed things down so much on multiplayer (both BZ and BZII), I stopped using it. This is not due to a slow computer, but a slow internet connection (yes, I am on a crappy dial up).
Someone said that the lock ups might only relate to Core66 maps, and I think they might have a point there, because those particular maps are basically the only MPI's I have been playing. In any case, I'll try playing a regular multiplayer MPI tonight and see if I have a lock up problem, and get back to the group.
Thanks -
Mother's Helper
Mother's Helper, are you ingame when the lockups occur or are you in the shell? If its ingame, I suggest trying standard mpi maps to see if they lock up too. If its in the shell, its most likely a driver issue or a heat issue.
He said above that he is disconnecting while in BZ (doesn't matter if its MP setup or in-game) by pulling out the phone line. That's the killer right there. Any computer waiting for a response from a hard device will lock up a computer, be it on a mainframe or on a PC.

:-D
Hi Gang -
Well, I played a standard MPI game on line last night, and nothing locked up at all - so I am thinking that perhaps only the Core66 MPI games are effected by the lock up problem.
In any case, I'll try a Core66 MPI tonight and if and when it locks up, I'll post the error file.
By the way Red Devil - I'm a GUY  - I don't remember how I came up with this goofy name, but it's too late to change now (lol).
Mother's Helper
Sorry about that. I've made a man out of you now. ;-)
BTW, did you keep the phone line connected last night while playing?
Hi gang -
Yes Red Devil - I kept the game connected on the internet, but I kept the players to "1', so no one else could join.
Anyway, tonight I played the Core66 MPI game Spiniflex II and played it without any problems whatsoever for an hour and a half. The game I was playing when I had the lock ups was X-Bones II. I don't know if there is an indemic problem with that particular map or not, but I had no problem at all with the Spiniflex II map.
Frankly, I had hoped to have a lock up and be able to share an error message text to all of you tech/guru types but it just didn't happen. Tomorrow I will try another X-Bones II game and see what happens.
Mother's Helper
Mother's, you might note what races you were playing, both for yourself and the computer team, if you do run into a lock up. I vaguely remember that one of Square Eyes Maps did tend to lock up on me when I tried to play it, but I think it was only if I tried to play a certain combination of races.
Space
:-)
Hi Space - It's good to see that you still hang out here.
I'll be getting home late tonight, but will try a couple of different Core66 MPI games and see if the lock up problem happens. In most cases, I just play NSDF against NSDF.
Regarding multiplayer games, it is difficult to find a standard 1.3 game to join. It seems that most players are trying out one of the various 1.3 mod games, and frankly it is difficult to keep track of which mod is currently in vogue (lol). I think I'll wait until some ultimate mod comes out that everyone is happy with before I install it.
Mother's Helper
I think that G66 is about the only mod that is really ready for public consumption that currently is running under BZ2 v1.3public. (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.) Even G66 is really still in beta and being worked on by Natty and others.
I mentioned SquareEyes maps, because he is the author of the XBones map and a couple of others that are part of the G66 series. While Natty gets credit for the whole G66 experiment, the files he's tinkered with are available for others to use to create their own G66 maps, which is what Square Eyes and other map makers have done.
I think that most of the other completed mods would all be for BZ2 v1.2. These include the Forgotten Enemies and the Uler mods to mention a couple that I'm familiar with. There is also a earlier version of G66 for BZ2 v1.2, which has a pretty sizable collection of maps made by other map makers, beyond the original ones that Natty released.
Space
MH, now run the maps and unplug your phone line from your modem as you did before and see what happens.
:?
This is really weird -
I've played the X-Bones II map three times over the last few evenings, and have not had a single freeze up, so I don't know what the problem has been.
The only thing I did differently with these last three games was to NOT disconnect the modem after I started the multiplayer game. I either started the game out with only one player (me) or made it for 2 players. In either case, I had no more freeze up problems. Maybe the issue of hanging up the modem after I started the game was the one thing that contributed to the freeze up.
One question I do have though....how do you snipe one of those mighty "Goul" ships that are found in the corner of the map? As anyone knows who plays this particular map, there is no red snipe dot on that ship, but even when I shoot my snipe rifle where I assume the dot would be, nothing seems to happen. It is also interesting that whenever the Goul ship is nearby my own ship, it shows up on my inventory of ships.
Mother's Helper
I swear I'm invisible sometimes...

I have the exact same problem! I have to make an entire new thread and complain about nobody listening to me for anyone to listen to me.
MH, The best way to play MPI's solo is to click on the "connect thru gamespy" button and change it to "TCP/IP LAN only". This way, you don't have to worry about anyone even trying to join your games thru gamespy as it cannot see your game.
Anybody seen APC's lately?
you cant snipe them, but there are a few you can steal
i think apc is with red in jellystone...
