Title: (MAJOR Suggestion) Sattalite view.
Post by: Jwk the Hemp Monkey on August 17, 2005, 12:31:20 AM
I have noticed, whilst playing 1.3 multiplayer, esp on those maps where its 4 or so commanders each with their own recycle...

That your quite often away from the arear you need to be building stuff from.

I think that perhaps, once a relay bunker is built, that one should be able to press a shortcut and be placed in satalite view....however...you lose control of your ship, it stays still...as you do this. Making it a big risk of being sniped or ambushed...

But anyway, it would *really* make playing those sorts of games easier and more fun. And i think its a really easy to impliment thing because to activate it in 1.2 is just a simple measure of

game.cheat bzview

Whatever the shortcut key is (which btw i have been wondering).

Just pressing that activates the exact same thing as i am suggesting. The only difference is that I suggest it works on the basis of 'only functions if the relay bunker is up and with power...

...it also happens to be what bz1 did...

There's a console command to open satelite view I think, and even the Editor view without the interface (so you can rotate the camera/etc)

View.Set.Editor or something like that, not sure if it works in MP

Doesn't affect strat *too* much...but it does mean 1v1v1v1 maps are alot easier to play on....and it also makes mpis alot better....

But, who knows what the shortcut is if you use the cheat

game.cheat bzview

?

If you can't get the satalite view to change its perspective because of the hud....then perhaps there should be a button so satalite view had two modes. One where you can give command etc, and another where you can just change perpsective and camera view...

Actually hemp that command (game.cheat bzview) will make you see everything on the map and make everything appear on radar. Hmm, well I think that's the one. Then there's game.cheat bzradar, that is suppossed to give you free access to sattellite view but I've never seen it do a thing.
Anyways, if this gets implemented it'd be cool to have it as a tag option in the com bunker (or maybe just anywere). That way you can not affect strat in any way at all and ppl can choose which one to use by means of rec variants.

I just think commanders should be able to press a short cut and have the sattalite view, as long as they have power and relaybunker...and not have to actually *log in* as an easily killed pilot to get it working.

I mean, how many times have i lost a game or something becaus i had to run always across the map and make a building, then run all the way back to the other end.

I tried to activate it ingame in 1.2...but i don't know what the shortcut is ...i am going to go ask in maps and mods forum.

The move from the BZ1-style-always-accessible-once-the-Comm-was-built-style of Satellite view to the BZ2 Comm Bunker was debated during the original beta.  The idea was to make the pilot get out of his tank at times to heighten the danger, and hence the fun.

Personally I think setting up a Comm Bunker should enable activating a Satellite view showing only your units, similar to the BZ1 version.  Getting out of your tank and actually using the Comm Bunker should give you the current view.

Kindof an MS style setup, where you get the basics when you buy the package, and anything more requires an upgrade.  :)

once you activate it game.cheat bzview and if you got the bzgame_keys.cfg  you can press shift or ctrl + f11 i believe, and it works like the bunker, i think unless you want to type it in the console (view.satellite) hell i dunno what it is in the console but there you go.

huh? so in school you explain things better?
either way, thats some very intresting pieace of information, I realy dont know what I would've done without it

QuoteI mean, how many times have i lost a game or something becaus i had to run always across the map and make a building, then run all the way back to the other end.

I love this kind of stuff... while its harder for you its harder for the other commander as well, no? so, if you master your control better you benefit out of it... or in simple - skills!
I just love all those handicaps when you command

It's called "power management" and it's a part of strategic thinking and is also part of situational awareness (something every battlefied commander should have). If you can't figure that out, no wonder you lose (and you should lose).

Scions, gotta love Power Lungs... :D

I haven't yet played BZ1 but I do love the idea of making the satview availiable from your tank.
Maybe Av can add that in his BZ1 Classic Mod :D

yeah, I think its Ctrl+F10 after you type in game.cheat bzview

Title: Balance?
Post by: Marksman on August 18, 2005, 07:53:39 PM
Well, the Scion can put their service bay in the field, but ISDF can't. ISDF can put bunkers in the field, but Scion can't. Well they could, but it's expensive and risky for their tech tree, and they only get one.

If suddenly everyone had satalite view everywhere, that balance would go away. Is that delicate enough to notice?

Acutaly, it doesnt metter much

and besides, scions have blink, its much safer blinking home, or anywhere u need to be isntead of hoping in a bunker

The scion relay bunker isn't just a bunker...its critical to their tech tree...

Personally, I want to see a bit more protection to the pilot in a comm bunker or overseer.  Its too damn annoying to be killed by your own units as they fire at something else.  I mean the bunkers and overseer's should be shielding the pilot from explosions and stuff, isn't that a point of a bunker?

I would love it if you could also customize your factory/recycler from the com bunker.  Would make things alot more easier to alterate your weapons.  ISDF have SP-STab, equip deflection...uh ho, they switch to plasma, go with aborbtion!

QuoteThe idea was to make the pilot get out of his tank at times to heighten the danger, and hence the fun.

and although thats a good concept...it has ended up with any sort of competition (e.g. a tough MPI or Strat) meaning the person who goes in the bunker isn't fighting as hard as they could.

The *cost* of managing things from the bunker is that you cannot pilot a ship, and if even just one stray mdm gets inside the bunker, you die.

Therefore, commanding from that view simply...well...hasn't happened. It doesn't happen even in MPI much, let alone strat...

So, by doing this suggestion the cost of having access to better power management tools is your ship standing still whilst your distracted (snipe or ambush anyone?)....

This is a much more acceptable risk, but it is still a risk. Meaning that going around in your ship commanding does have its benifits...
Also, taking out the command bunker is now a useful tactic vs ISDf because

one) it means they can't make sabres
two) the comander has to haul his ship all the way back to base just to build something...

I think it would improve the strat, improve the MPI...hell...just improve the game if it was done.
If some people disagree...then make it a shell option or something. Make it 'possiable'...

Which probably isn't too hard since in 1.2 you can do it in the singleplayer with just a simple in-built code....

its fully possible with dll...
Title: (MAJOR Suggestion) Sattalite view.
Post by: Jwk the Hemp Monkey on August 19, 2005, 12:15:40 AM
Perhaps, i have no idea, but i don't even know fully what a dll is, let alone those who would make it....

However, if its fully possiable with dll, could it be made a pre-packaged option? Doesn't doing it purely by dll and not having it as a pre-set option mean it would only be available on certain maps? I would far rather it was available on any map.....

Wasn't there something done similar to this? BZ2RTS I believe, only that made the game permanently in the 'command' view instead of being able to activate it with a key.

Commanding from bunkers is kinda fun in 4-ways and large MPI maps, but you wouldn't even think about it in strat. To me the 2 biggest issues is that most of the time you're leaving a ship (usually something like a blasttank) without a pilot AND you can't defend the location you're at until you get back in.

Personally I'd be happy with being able to interface with the satelite from a vehicle, not neccessarily with a hotkey but just without the need to exit the ship at least. You'd think that with the technology on the craft they'd be able to do that...
Being able to set fac configs/etc from the comm bunker is nice too, although I think that should still be done as a pilot so you've still got an actual reason to enter the damn thing.

I agree with angels point about having to enter a factory...the number of times i have sneaked inside and stolen a ship as the comander has come along. Its invaluable. It also make you want to protect the factory more, cause now it costs time *and* resources to make, instead of just resources.

Anyway, wasn't there something in bz1 about how because you use biometal, your communications are pretty much un-hackable, and in my mind it seems like the only ones who found a way to hack were the cerberi....

hmm I seem to remember from my noob days, that using the bunker view in strat usually resulted in getting stuck in that view and being unable to logout of the com bunker, probably something to do with resyncs.

That problem is rather comming, I get every so often.  It usually occours if the power goes out or if somehow you were pushed AWAY from the pannel in the commbunker/overseer.  It's most comming for me when I play scion.  Sometimes an enemy pilot will get in my scout and start to sonic wave my overseer...it ends up pushing me away from the overseer's pannel and I get stuck.

about 1.5 or something
almost impossiable getting my mouse to the "logout", sometimes it can take me mins

That's a bug I get. It seems to be triggered by clicking on the radar screen to navigate around the map, so the rare times I use it now I just scroll...

theres some bug with radar scrolling though, like your constantly clicking on the radar when you get stuck in the bunker, really a pain to fix too
Title: (MAJOR Suggestion) Sattalite view.
Post by: Jwk the Hemp Monkey on August 22, 2005, 12:08:30 PM
What if the radar map were tobe diveded up into 'grids'. and your mouse could only click on the certain parts...

You don't use clicking on the radar map to do fine tuneing of your perspective it, you use it to get to the other side of the map instantly.

Perhaps if the mouse when hovering over the grid could only 'snap' into certain parts.

Bascvially....divide the map into 100 squares, when using th emouse to click on the map to move your perspective, the perspective only 'snaps' to one of those squares.
Title: (MAJOR Suggestion) Sattalite view.
Post by: Angelwing on August 22, 2005, 12:28:59 PM
Not sure it would help, I think the trouble with radar in multi (at least 1.2) is that if you go from one end of the map to the other it has to then load all the data for that area, which if im correct in understanding the meaning of 'neardistance' would cause a sudden bandwidth spike,aswell as CPU - which can then trigger that 0.3ish FPS bug, meaning all you can do is either wait for it to fix itself (if ever) or attempt to type /leave to get out of there

From bzgame_keys.cfg in the patch13.pak (pb1):
// Camera views
Bind("+shift F1", "view.set.cockpit");
Bind("+shift F2", "view.set.forward");
Bind("+shift F3", "view.set.chase");
Bind("+shift F4", "view.cockpit");
Bind("+shift F5", "view.interface");
Bind("+shift F9", "view.set.schematic");
Bind("+shift F10", "view.set.satellite");
Bind("+shift F12", "view.set.freeeye");

Oh, this reminds me.  I used to use freeeye alot, but now, the ship's movement controlls dont allow you to move the camera.  Is this just a 1.3 public beta thing?  I loved flying around and taking pictures, it made the phisics feel like space, well, except you would stop on a dime and you where actuly just a camera, but still?

EDIT: We should make the editor camera F8 or F11, or move F10 to F11 and make F10 the editor camera, or... you get the idea.

EDIT: EDIT: So the dll turns on game.cheat bzview (or whatever) when a relay bunker is made, and turns it off when all bunkers are destroyed.

Then Shift + F10 or maby a custom controll, will work.
