Title: Need a nice wispy smoke sprite.
Post by: Steeveeo on March 06, 2008, 05:25:17 AM
I need a filler for after my nuke (that I showed you guys earlier) goes off, but the stock smoke.tga is too full for the effect I want, which would be a nice, wispy smoke sprite to use instead of just the static groundsplat I have now.

If whoever volunteers can, can you make one version for the "one one modulate" blending mode and one for the "srcalpha invsrcalpha modulatealpha" blending mode?

Please and thank you!

(BTW, whoever volunteers, if you want an example of wispy smoke, throw a grenade (either flash or frag, I cant remember which smokes afterwards) in COD4 (if you have it), then look at the ground where it blew up, there should be some stringy smoke emitting from the ground.)

Here, if you want some COD4 smoke and explosions.
Some smoke and heat out of a rocket silo, a smoke grenade, a frag grenade:  http://www.overminddl1.com/cod4/Video_0_mpeg42.avi
A frag grenade, an rpg, a smoke grenade:  http://www.overminddl1.com/cod4/Video_1_mpeg42.avi
Just made them, took only a couple of minutes.

A bit grainy due to the compression, but meh, you can see how they are and whatever he is referring to.

And although I am not certain, I am pretty sure that I never saw any smoke after a flash grenade, not that you would see anything anyway considering it blinds whoever is looking at it.  I think I see what he means with whispy smoke after the frag grenade, most noticable in video_1.

Savefile is a good way, or upload it to the coppermine gallery over at BZComplex.

Got it, but sadly, and I dont mean to be a jerk, but this isnt quite the thing I was looking for, its too much of a cloud...its also quite oblong... :|

Sorry man, but thanks for your help, Im sure I'll find a use for it, I'll add your name to the credits for the next release.

Anyone working on the wispy style smoke still?

Could you just edit the current file and change the alpha channel to make it less substantial?

Not quite what I mean by wispy. I mean like the litte twirl of smoke you get when you blow out a candle, except on a bigger scale

TOO, thanks again for your sprite, didnt work for what I wanted it to, but it makes an awesome smoke replacement after scaling it vertically to be completely round.

My mushroom cloud looks quite a bit less "chunky" than it did before. :P

Anyway, anyone got the wisps done yet?

I will need to track that issue down then. I think it is a cookie glitch on the gallery. I allow users to make galleries in the personal section, maybe you didn't do that first. It might be that you have to log out of the forum, go to the gallery, and then log in from there to be sure the cookies are synced right. I will figure that out. Steeveeo is one of my foundation members, so I may task him to tests...

Might be cookies, then. When I log in, it says I did successfully. But on the next page I'm logged out. I've tried the gallery, index, private messages, and the user CP. None of the pages on the website seem to keep me logged in.
