Title: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: shane ward on May 14, 2008, 12:08:06 AM
Yep, I have gotten my hands on a walker thing that needs animating. I normally take the animation from the game units already but it is very hard and normally does not work, anyone out who would be willing to help.

The file is below for anyone to download.

Here is the link: - LINK REMOVED, PROJECT FAILED.

Many thanks
Shane

huh... you uh... you thinking about adding any more detail to that model?

But, yeah, as far as help, what ever happened to that walker tutorial?

@BBB: Shane has done a couple of mods in the past, and also has made an ODF editor (Which is really nice, by the way).  He's also been around a lot longer than you.  So pipe down.

It would be perferrable if I could get a version with the missing piece....if u want it animated. also, each leg seperate pieces? Looks like 2 pieces are missing?

I will look at it, so what game did it come from?
Title: Re: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: shane ward on May 14, 2008, 01:02:44 PM
As far as I know the missing piece is just a cylinder that connects the body to the foot area. and there are two, one for each leg.

It is supposed to be a combat unit that walks and fires a Lazar or something, I have not decided yet.

If you look at my website there is a list of things I have made for Battlezone 2
http://www.shanesdoomwads.freeservers.com/bz2

And Anyone that is animating this is more then welcome to add more detail if they like to play around with it ;)

Have fun

I'll take a look at it and fix it up geometrically, and if I can figure out how to get the animation thingy working get it back to you at some point in the future...BNG. I just beginning to animate stuff in GSL, but the going's a bit slow for now.

Cool, it's got a texture too. Shame on you BBB it could look worst, but I think I can tweak it by editing the geometry and fine tuning it a bit. GSL, works good editing objects like this. BNG, breaks out the hammer and chisel and begins to wittle away the rough edges.

OK people the time has come to where I need this model working.

I need this walker animated so anyone who can do it, Please do.

I need basic animations like Walking, Running, Dying, turning and so forth... Basically the same animation as the ISDF Constructor.

Many thanks

animating a walker is the hardest thing to do in bz2 - the last one i did for you was really hard - and i did that one with threed and notepad!!

another thing - why cant you do it yourself??
Title: Re: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: shane ward on June 21, 2008, 12:04:29 AM
If no one will do it, then I will Have to.

It will take about 2 months to do it.

I have done some models already, which have taken a very long time to do, and they are not animated properly and problems can be seen if the player looks hard at it.

The one you made for me BBB was right on the mark and you had an idea that I thought could be reproduced through other models I have. But I do not know how you did it and it does not seem to work also when I attempt to do it.

I was debating if I should post this or not... But "bigbadbogie" you are slowly starting to piss me off, please be a little more courteous in you posts.

Shane.

The main problem I have with animating the model is getting all the Z,Y,Z Points to line up properly to the animation. Everytime I place all the parts in the correct order and then animate it, all the parts start to move in a strange place and the model is messed up.

Make sence what I said? lol

0_o, where are it's  upper legs? oh, and hope you dont mind that i will need to break the arms into two pieces for a nicer animation of the arms moving, looks like Frankenstein atm.  :-D

lol, Thats OK. Also the upper legs did not process properly when I converted it, they got missing. From what I can tell, it was Just two Cilinder parts.

That looks cool, Any way to make the guns or arms to look more rounded if you are up to it, and it is good for animating.

Thanks for doing the model. It looks great ;) and the way you fixed the leg ;)

Careful tessellation and vertex welding. The welding makes it require UV fixes, but tessellation itself does not.

Bump: :P

Anyhow, I have most of everything ready to be packed up and tested ingame.... only thing i seem to be missing is the .odf file to make sure the model moves correctly when the correct physics are applied ingame. (IOW: are the animated legs moving at a speed identical to how much distance the walker is meant to cover in 30 seconds)
Title: Re: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: Avatar on June 24, 2008, 06:24:14 PM
Walkers are, in Ken's words, "Using the most powerful animation code in the game."  IOW the legs will move according to the physics parameters specified in the ODF.  The animation provides the steps, the code moves them appropriately to achieve the speeds.

This is different than the 'fake walkers' like the pilots and constructors.  They need an 'animation speed' set in the ODF to make the leg motions match the physics.

The main issue with walkers, as far as I can tell, is that the 'foot' objects need pivots AT ground level that never, during the course of the animation, dip BELOW ground level.  If they do bad physics effects happen.

(Just saw the pics, and darned if it doesn't look like FROGGER with an attitude...  and guns  :)  )  You just HAVE to make a good 'jump' animation for it...  :)  )

As far as I am aware, Yes, I normaly use all the constructors animation, But not sure on the speed thingy. Also If possible to have a death animation where all the parts blow up in a way. Like it exploded. If you are feeling adventrus ;)

Also I forgot to say a few times, that the texture on the main body of the unit looks like it is slightly off, I do not know if it's the error I gave you or something that was changed when u did the screenshots. Just letting you know ;)

Thanks for doing this, You are a star ;)

P.S How are you at animating Spiders ;)

Hehe

OK, I just love bad news.. God someone kill me!

Only kidding... Anyway. WHY DID I BUMP THIS......

Well..... I have a good reason.

The walker that this post is all about is still not working, and I need anyone's help to make it finally work.

I have included all I have on this walker and this pice of..... Well anyway.... the walker will not walk, turn, and just likes to bunny hop all over the place. From what I can gather all other animations work a jem... Warfreak who was kind to make most of the animations work was unable to correct and now I am passing it to anyone who might be able to fix it.

So, I am asking for anyone that can work with this model to get it to walk, run and turn successfully....

Here is the link below for the updated file.

It animates but it does not move.

I think the dummy_root is NOT used to determine if the unit is on the ground in a walker.
Your walker appears to hover just above the ground, I cannot see why it is doing it, but the bottom of the feet should not go below the ground level (0) like they seem to in threed.

OK I got it walking!
I just set geometryscale = 1
He is rather short and not scary now though!
The model needs to be built very accuratly or to scale, bottom of the feet exactly on the ground.

Post by: Warfreak on September 15, 2008, 10:01:27 PM
2Shed, you've done it, you Dalek Slave, you.  :-D

The unit was done VERY small on my end, I'm guessing that was never how Shane intended it, and I could never fully find which Pieces the Engine gives a default to. (Ex: Head, Lfoot & Rfoot)
Title: Re: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: mrtwosheds on September 16, 2008, 06:08:02 PM
When I made my spider walker I had to put the main _body axis at ground level, otherwise it sunk to wherever it was. I don't fully understand why, the isdf walker does not need that and neither did the other one I made, walkers are a bit weird.
Title: Re: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: shane ward on September 16, 2008, 07:41:23 PM
Umm, I donno what you lot had done, but the walker worked fine but it just likes to bunny hop all over the map. It's down to the animation. and animation needs to be re-done.
Title: Re: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: mrtwosheds on September 17, 2008, 02:38:41 AM
I just loaded it up, It could not move. It had geometryscale = 15, so I set it to 1 and it then it started walking again.
I guess the inaccuracy's got scaled up too so its feet were no longer close enough to the ground to work.
Title: Re: New Walker Unit Needs Animating...
Post by: shane ward on September 17, 2008, 10:25:20 AM
Unfortulently, the unit needs to be a scale of 15 for the map... So it will need to be fixed ;)

Ummmm LARDY DAR DAR DAR.....

Sorry just that type of night.... OK....

From what I can gather, I am not too sure the size is the problem.....

The death animation works perfectly all of them. also the animation where the walker sits down works all fine too....with the geometryscale as it is. Only the walking, turning, running and maybe the Idle animation is not working properly. I did notice how ever that the animation frames or lines in the xsi files are very few compared to the death, and sitdown animation, like there are not many keyframes and the game is skipping a few or something, it does look odd in the xsi file...

Anyway, I like the death animation and also the sitdown... If no one can solve this, I will have to bodge it with the constructor animation and it will be the basic crap... and probably not work properly anyway, like the other walking units I have.

ALSO... NOTE....

For all the 3D Max mad people out there, I have found the original zip that Warfreak gave me and have posted it, it wil have all the Max files needed to edit this Model...... Link below.

LINK REMOVED, PROJECT FAILED.

NOTE: - There is no ODF file and the model texture has not been updated with the correct fixings.....

Have fun

I will have to see if I can bodge something together at a later date, so if the walker looks, crap, or not right, you all did have your chance.

Many thanks for the help some people tried to help with, I am hugly dissapointed with the lack of help tho. Mayby the walker is just not intresting for people to work on... Well.... Thanks for the people that tried....
