Title: Water troubles.
Post by: Steeveeo on June 01, 2008, 11:17:37 PM
I've decided to dip my hand into map making recently, and, I cant, for the life of me, figure out how to get water working correctly!

Can anyone point me toward a tutorial for this? I've got all the physics, reflectiveness, and height all correct, just no textures or underwater fog at all...

You have to type the texture name into the box in the editor.
water fog needs to be set up in the console, fog.water
you will need to set all 4 values.

Did all that, the fog is now there, but I dont have any textures on the water still.

water256.tga
rendlava.tga
plutoice.tga
toxic_water.tga

That's 4 that I know...
In all honesty, that's all you really need. Water isn't a massive part of a map, and if it was it would be one texture anyway.

I put in the textures long ago, (water256.tga), but they never show up...

I have this same issue if I make a map from scratch. To make any kind of map I have to take an existing one and blank it, replace the textures, and go from there.

That's why I'm not a mapper.

Your .WAT file wasn't present while you were trying to add the water :)

Re-save the map in the editor and it should add one for you.

It was. I restarted BZ2, saved, and reloaded the map several times, just decided to work after about the fifth reload.

I get that problem when my .WAT file was removed.

Your computer must have given it to the aliens to work on for a few hours.

Must be the same aliens who keep throwing random "FIXME: Tracked Physics gone Berserk line 861" into my stuff (first my thumper, then the missiles, wonder whats next)...

oh yeh had things like this happen before... things just 'work' for no reason... and dont for no reason...

i have NO idea why

ERROR: Weapon gpistol|=|a.odf can not be found

that |=| is that stupid hollow box that comes up if i cant display a character for whatever reason. the thing is theres NO weapon in my folder called that. similar tho

Yes that's what the error is saying....
Something says there should be one.

do a googlesearch for Windows Grep, then point it to your mod folder and search for the line gpistol[]a in all your text files. One of them may have gotten corrupted slightly and now has the square.

Sadly, that wont quite work, since there are a HUGE number of possible characters that are viewed as a square like that. Instead, search for:

"gpistol"

and go though the results manually.

pb4 reports the last few ODFs opened on a bunch of errors.
