Title: Bz2 Unit Icons
Post by: Commando on June 07, 2008, 01:51:28 AM
Does anyone know how to create bz2 unit icons?

For the most part, I know how to do it, my main problem is getting the coloring right.  Anyone know what light colors were used when creating the icon renders?

As far as I can tell, I can't setup the lighting in 3Dex to match the stock icons.

I hope I am wrong since that is all I have for editing them.

I take them in blue from 3DE or DE and then use MAX to change it to whatever I want.

much better idea

i know we hate this program but... open it in threed with all the textures taken off. now get a side-on view of it perhaps, and take a screenshot.

save that screenshot in windows paint as a 24-bit bitmap (i think thats the one). the black background is completely black around the model which is useful because you dont have to cut it out

open the file in XnView and save it as a .tga

edit the file with GIMP, go to layer>transparency>colour to alpha and select black.

the alpha channel should now be added in.

save the file (under SAVE AS only NOT SAVE or it will add RLE compression which BZ2 doesnt support and youll get an AV) as icon_*v****.tga

there you go! i believe you can add a blue tint to the image in gimp as well.

TheJamsh, thats just a slower, harder, lower quality version of what I do and said.

In the state where the trial period of 3DE has ended, you can still view models.

I stole it from a tutorial, I added the PS part cause I like to tweak it a lot to make it perfect.

Why?  The trials are free, and a couple of them don't break completely when their trial period is up.  And most of them are in the same place, if you know where it is.

Dutchboy's site remains.
There it is.
3DE is the shortened name for 3DExploration, now called DeepExploration, and is used to view and convert mesh files and image files.

Dutch Boy's site (http://www.dutch-boy.com/3De/) has the installers for a great many trial versions of 3DE.  Just remember that these are trials.  After 30 days, they brick themselves, unless you find the one that only bricks itself most of the way.

They all do NOT brick themselves.

They loose all saving functions.
In other words, you can still edit and screen shot.

Some of them don't even let you render after the thirty days.  And it's kind of hard to edit anything if you can't save it...

Here's something funny. :)

I got hired at my present job because I knew how to use 3dExploration. My main tool now a days is Deep Exploration CAD Edition from Right Hemisphere. :D

But it's not like 3DE is hard to use anyway.

Another Success story rooted from modding BZ2 :D

Also, my 3DE 1.5 is still working long and well for me (i got it in January i think).

Considering that current web sites seem to disappear over the course of time I'd be a safe bet to download all of the 3DEX files while their still available. The side benefit would be useful down the road as if they do disappear then a copy could be available from another modder as seems to be more and more common as BZ2 resources dwindle as most modders have already noticed.

I think the worst thing that could happen to the modding world is the disapearance of www.bzscrap.com

If necessary, I could probably be another BZScrap if it ever went down, assuming I got all the files that is.  My bandwidth allowances would allow BZScrap to fit in it now, unlike before.  It would still be close though, so would still prefer to not to unless needed. :)
