Hi all. I've been working on a little game that has physics inspired by BZ2....and it's finally ready to show the world.
Please check out http://slackerrevolution.com/PicklePanic, and let me know what you think.
Thanks!
That was... Interesting.
needs to not hide my cursor, it was a pain in the ass to close the window...
I don't think that was his fault though.
Same here.
...wow ... um... well......what can i say??
10/10 for originality i suppose.. hmm
Extremely unique. :) I had fun. :)
The only thing I notice is that when it hides my mouse in Firefox, after I get rid of the window, it still won't allow me to have my mouse back until I shut down firefox completely and start it again.
Besides that, It was cool. :D
It kilt my FF browser.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
That cursor thing has been bedeviling me...I thought I had it locked down. This version of the unity engine only makes web packages for windows.
The safest bet is to go into settings and go fullscreen until you're done playing...then alt-f4 to close the browser. I may look into having it just go full screen and stay there on launch, but that seemed a little rude...less rude than an invisible cursor, I suppose.
Red: Did you try it more than once? Did you get to play at all or did it crash at the menu?
It was unique. Very unique. But I couldn't really play it because I wasn't really getting anything over 5 FPS. :-P
That's my computer, I suppose...
VSMIT.
Trying it agin. It says, "Press yout Home key to activate the menu"
How do you go fullscreen?
Duh, got it.
Got the same error the second time, but then it ran fine in subsequent attempts.
I got down to 1 pickle. Pickle Mas-tah
Them some tough pickles. :-D
Well, jsut leting you know that the player's pickle really feels like a BZ tank. Nice work....
I basically kamekazid a pickle and died (I charged it, it blew up, and the game ended because I had -7479 health )

Yout got a problem with that, Pickle Mastah?
You are but a pickle padewan, anyhow...to win the game, you must destroy all the pickles and keep all 3 peaches alive. I've done it, so I know it's possible. If you succeed, you will get a pass code on the game over screen. When you post the pass code here, all will know you have ascended to the rank of Pickle Mastah!
I have a new version up...there was a problem where it wouldn't save your mouse settings from game to game. I also set the default mouse mode to inverted, as that seems the most popular...can be changed in settings.
If you're getting a low frame rate, I suggest going into settings and selecting a low resolution. This will put you in full screen mode, which also helps. I have been able to get about 15fps on an old g4 mac mini with a legendarily sucky graphics chipset...if you have anything less than that, I'm sorry, i just cant' help you :(
I've got an intermittant crash bug that appears to have to do with playing sounds....when you fire the gun. Appears to happen only near the start of the game...if anybody observes it later on, I'd like to know about it.

Gotta be careful...them pickles blows up hard....especially if you shoot a bunch of them weak. When one finally goes, it can start a massive chain reaction that can kill you and/or blast your peach out into deep water.
PP humbly reports that FF crash all time now. wrap_oal.dll no happy!
AppName: firefox.exe AppVer: 1.8.20080.40413 ModName: wrap_oal.dll
ModVer: 2.0.0.0 Offset: 00028de9
Log sent.
THANK YOU!
I haven't ever managed to get any kind of error message out of the thing...IE or FF just goes tits up and disappears.
Oddly enough, it works fine for me in both firefox and ie :(.
That looks like it's openal/sound related, which confirms some suspicions. I do have a lot of sound sources in the thing...I'll make some changes and get another build up.
Is this a windows only game? When I click on 'unity web player' nothing happens.
Pickle Padawan get extra bowl of rice today. :-D

Windows and OSX. You might be able to download the windows player from unity3d.com and run that under wine, but I doubt it will work. The windows player is proving to be pretty finicky.
If anybody has a mac, I can get them an app that does not require the web player.
What about firefox version 3, Will it work on it?
Grrrr, FF alerts you when updates are available, but they don't alert you when new versions are available. What's up with that?
Yeah I downloaded it and installed it about 10 or so days ago.
No error so far when using FF 3.0.
I took out the engine sound, which appeared to be causing the crashes...not sure though. Waiting for a response from the Unity guys now...I'll probably pay for a support incident to get this fixed.
I got down to 4 pickles.
BTW the tractor beam doesnt seem to do much more than flip my ship upsidedown and drag me along for the ride...
Also, if you can, could you take out the freeze effect that happens whenever I get caught up in an explosion? I dont like sitting on the ground for 30 seconds whilest all the other guys are making off with my peaches...
You have a pretty good range with the pickle gun...just stay back!
If you got dragged around by the tractor beam, chances are you hooked into a pickle, not a peach. The tractor beam is critical to saving all 3 peaches. Once you get hooked into a peach, turn around and haul it back with you. You can pull them in reverse, but its slow because the reverse thrust is weaker than the forward thrust.
Assuming you can play at all...this sound bug is killing me.
havent got the sound bug yet, but I was definitely hooked into a peach (it was headed toward the water and I had just killed the pickle chasing it), I hooked into it and pulled back and succeeded in flipping over and loosing the tractor.
There was a tractor beam?
When it takes your mouse, and you get out, it is still invisible. If you can close the tab/window, you will get your mouse back (in IE).
The tractor beam will break if too much force is applied. This can happen if a pickle blows up very close to the peach, or if you accidentally shoot the peach.
Beat the game, all pickles dead, but no passcode...I've got a major sence of A Winner is You (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AWinnerIsYou) syndrome right now...
EDIT: HA! So it IS possible! You actually had to micromanage all 3 peaches. You need a difficulty setting, Easy: One peach left alive to win; Medium/Normal: 2 Peaches left to win; and Hard: All 3 alive to win.
And proof:
Passcode: Vermillion S. Dakota
Pickle Mastah baby.
I killed all 25 pickles (but then my last peach was so close to the ocean it rolled in.)
Im Pickle Grasshoppa'

Congrats, Steevo! You are teh r0x0rs! PickleMastah Prime! I was beginning to think I'd made it too hard.
The lower difficulty levels are kind of built in...it gives you the option to keep playing even though you are down a peach or two. There is a restart button in the main menu if you are going for total mastery, however. I was working under a 30 day time constraint, from knowing nothing about Unity and C# to producing a playable game, so many corners got cut. I'll keep your idea in mind for a next release.
I've been pondering a co-op version, playable over a network, or maybe a pvp where you have to steal the other guys peaches. I haven't played with the unity networking stuff yet, so I don't know how well it will work for pvp, but co-op should definitely be doable.
Does this sound interesting to you guys?
I have to get this audio issue fixed though, or I will have to dump the unity engine entirely...which would be sad...it works so sweet on the mac.
Hmm, how about just a plain ol' DM mode? Either PvC or PvP would work if you can get the networking up and running.
Heh, for a victory meal, I ate a can of peaches
Also, note to all, shooting as many pickles as possible before they land sure does help, Pickle Sniping also helps (shooting down a pickle fromthe other side of the half-mile-wide valley).
This logo is free for any use by AcneVulgaris.
I have a PSD with the shapes and will make some backgrounds for you as well.

Awesome pic n1!
Is that a Kill Pickle?
Looks like Canadians from southpark
Pickle: "You think I'm Canadian, aye?"

EDIT2:
OH NO! I forgot the K!
EDIT3:
Fixed it. Thank god for shapes!
Very cool art Nielk1, thank you! I'll get that into the next update.
Plain old DM may be harder than it seems. Network code for shooting at other people is difficult, given the speeds involved. I'll give it a try though.
Can you use photoshop PSD files? (Because of layer effects used on some of the shapes you would need to open them in photoshop.)
If not, tell me the size and the format and I will get them exported for you. I can also get just the title from the 2 wallpapers.
Yeah, I can use the PSDs, I think. Put them up and I'll make sure.
I'll get them together soon.
If u can't, I will be sure to get an SVG together by somehow getting them into inkscape.
The folks at Unity were kind enough to give me a 30 day trial of their pro version, which allows me to build real windows packages that don't require a browser, and that, as far as I can tell, don't have the sound bug that crashes them.
I've put a zip up at http://slackerrevolution.com/PickleWars.zip.zip (had trouble renaming, obviously) for those of you having trouble with the browser version.

If it's trouble to get those into the other formats, bitmaps that will fit in a 400x400 space are fine.
Downing it now.
Sorry for the delay.
Windowed, 1280 Fantastic, could barely move the mouse in the menu.
Windowed, 1280, Fantastic, I could move well in-game.
Controls felt a little different, so i tried auto level off/on, invert mouse off/on until it felt okay.
i dislike the grounding that happens when a pistol-packing pickle blows up nearby.
Mini-map? :-)
Still a Pickle Padawan..
I think fantastic gains you little with the primitive artwork included :) Interesting thing about the menu, though, I'll check it. Nobody seems to like being stunned...I thought it was so clever. Clever != fun.
A stunned pickle??? I've seen some stunning pickles before, but never a stunned one. Now, there was that Italian Gherkin back in '98, now she was a stunner....and then there was...
Here are the PSDs with SVGs in there as a bonus.
Inkscape (free) should be able to open the SVGs.

Got them, thanks. I'll work them in to the GUI when I get some time to work on this.
I hate to necro this, but out of a slight fit of nostalgia (and nothing to do in a short amount of time), I decided I wanted to play Pickle Panic.
So I boot up the browser, navigate to BZU, Search "Pickle Panic," find the thread, click the link, and what do I find? SITE GONE! Domain Name holding site in the place of my much wanted boredom game!
Anyway, does anyone have the local copy of PP saved somewhere online? Wouldst be most appreciated.
All I have up at the moment is a Mac build...I'll dig it out and do a PC build for you.
Ok it's up...mac and windows versions are available at http://www.humanpoweredgames.com.
Made a few changes...
Disabled the stun and crummy reticule.
Added Nielk1's wonderful artwork to the menu screen.
:D
It's a dilly... :-)
Full Screen and Windowed, 1280x1024, Fantastic. There were a ton of places where the mouse control stuck horribly, autolevelling didnt help, nor did windowed vs. full screen.
Severely noticable in the exact center (by/in the peach craters), and on the side mountains. I dont know if it was a phased type thing or what (I may have just been in those locations when it happened), but it happened, and it makes the game a tad "Nintendo Hard."
You mean the mouse just stops working in those places?
Seems ok on the mac...I'll drag out the windows box and have a look.
Do ya' want an icon file? I can make windows icons with all the sizes (I don't bother with the colors though).
yeah the mouse seems to be the only problem, other than that nice little. Add more detail to the pickles once you have completed everything.

Sure...would appreciate that.
A Human Powered Games logo would be really cool too, if you're into doing that.
