Title: Headlight Rendering glitch
Post by: Steeveeo on June 28, 2008, 01:44:56 AM
Was playing SRV with my brother on PB4 Multiplayer, and had everything (except Sky) set to full.

Every second, or few seconds (depending on MWF), the headlights would suddenly flicker off for a single frame then cut back on. It happens at a constant rate, giving a really annoying effect. Also, when I set lights down a notch to "No Headlights", the flickering went away, but so did a bunch of my vehicle effects (like tracked effects of a scavenger that I put on: treadmarks, dustclouds, and some dirtclods).

Also, a side note, setting the lights setting back and forth between No Headlights and Full resets the particle system. Good for bringing back dissapearing effects (due to MP effect trimming).

Anyone have any ideas about this?

Any pics that could explain it better?

All light sources reset on a world swap.  This has been the case long before pb4.

Wait - try turning off lightning = sky.bolt

1. I said lighting, not lightning
2. It happens on maps without lightning enabled (Bigmoon, 4 Play)

@Commando, I havent had this happen on any other version strangely enough...

considering it happens for a split second (about one frame), and its an On/Off sort of thing (not graphical corruption), its impossible to capture, so stop asking, please.

Headlights may have not always done that, but light sources always have.  Mainly if you shined a light at the ground and you just stared it it, you would see it blink.

I know what he is talking about and its never happened to me before in any previous patches.  Just every couple seconds the headlights blink off and back on.  I wasn't doing anything different from what I've done in other patches.

What you describe hasn't happened to me before in any other patches on any regular constant blinking basis.

1.1 and 1.2 also do this, I'm positive. I turn my ship's headlights off so it doesn't bother me. It also makes me harder to aim at :)

Just played 1.3pb3 a bit ago, the flickering only happened during a resync or when some effects got pruned, not constantly like it does now. Also, it happens to the entire base's light emits unless I turn off headlights (which for some reason turns off a bunch of vehicle effects too).

There was an emit <-> light mask added, but it should not have any effect like that.
I don't have any of these issues.

My guess would be the auto-settings reducer...  for a split second it's registering that your computer is being dragged down and reduces settings to 'one' light source.

but why does it do it at a constant rate then? My FPS starts around 160, which is way over the autotrim FPS setting of the lights, (which, IIRC, is around 40), but it still happens.

Public Beta 4 will recalcuate effects when you change light settings.  This is what caused your effects to die when adjusting light sources.  The effects should die then come back.
