Yea, USA's Internet connections are rather horrible compared to most other countries, and still worse then or equal to near the rest of them, we have just about the worst of all the developed nations (sans probably China).

well over here, Tony Blair promised to put fibre optic cables in everything. did it happen? i think not...

thats why i find it quite amusing when virgin tries to sell me a broadband package with a fibre-optic cable connecting to my phoneline. i mean WHATS THE POINT! theres no fibre optic cables anywhere else! plus ill also need a fibre optic converter of some description at both ends of the cable which just takes up more space, although not an awful.

so i can have about 10 metres of fibre optic cable which apparently will bring my broadband speed right up! they know about as much as the product they are selling as pcworld...

What Japan and several other countries did right was give government aid where needed. Take for example the power grid, or interstate highways in the US. Now what would the US be like if all the power grids and high ways were proprietary and without government funding? That's pretty much what's going on with the Internet's infrastructure in the US.

While it is obviously entertaining to blame politicians for everything and anything, it is fairly clear that this particular turd that we are currently standing in is bigger and smellier than anything they could have excreted on their own. It is an international poop puddle of unavoidable size, it is our poop puddle, we made it, all of us.
Had any of them tried to halt the religion of ever expanding economic growth, they would have been thrown them out of office before before you could say "Sustainable economy and infrastructure's"
They can only lead where the people will follow. We have willingly followed them up the hoot creek of our own choice.
This poop puddle may subside, but there is much worse to come if we just try to continue on up hoot creek.

Since I got my T1 I've noticed most sites you hit limit transfers to about 150kB/s.  Doesn't do you much good to have a faster connection if the other end is throttled.

For every increase in the home, the content providers would have to provide that * the number of concurrent users...which I just don't see happening.

A T1 max speed is only 1.5mbits/sec, which is only 192KB/sec, so that is near your max speed. :P
Everywhere I download from I reach my max speed pretty easily, but then again I do not download from places that only supply 150kb/sec, there are so many places that supply more for free, why would you choose a site that limits you?  Makes no sense to me...

typing with a psp...

om, that confuses me because the network administrator at our school say that the school is on a t1 connection. i've downloaded at school, and its average is 1.5MB/s depending on where I am downloading.

maybe he is wrong? what must they be running then?

QuoteT!:  A Level 1 digital transmission system operating at 1.536 mbps. Also known as DS-1.

If you downloaded faster then that, it is not a T1.  I have know of some 'school IT idiots' that think they have a T1 when they have multiple ISDN or an OC3 or something, so yes, if you have downloaded faster then that, I would say your network admin is a moron.  My university has an OC3 (which has variable levels, a single line OC3 can max at 51.84mbps or 155mbps, depending on setup, but they can be setup in multiple lines like ISDN to multiply the bandwidth available for a single connection).

In contrast, here is the fastest (http://www.thelocal.se/7869/20070712/) internet connection in the world! (http://www.thelocal.se/10810/20080331/) Note, the previous contains two links.

Apparently, beggars can't be choosers  :-(. If only I could be indifferent with my measly 2mbit connection. She doesn't know what she's missing   .

were i live the internet company called Bell will start u at 5 mbps and then they will slowly bring down your connection to as low as 50 kbps or untell u phone them or complane and then they will turn it back up just to make more room so others can get they connection dropped

Also sounds like AOL.

You have no idea how long it's taken me to persuade my parents to switch ISP.

I think I COULD be getting actual USA broadband, and ditching satellite. Down the road I live, I believe there is fiber optic line. On the street from that road which I live on, they're putting blue flags on one side of the road and orange stripes on the other side (where the telephone lines are).

I remember those, and yes, they are the fastest for a 'residential' connection, by far. :P

The fastest in the world was done between scientists that were separated by a few hundred miles (not that far relatively), but  it was something like 9.something TB/sec, this was like two years ago though, might have been beat by now...
