Title: You guys are good with computers, right?
Post by: CivBase on November 06, 2008, 11:17:10 PM
So, here's the scoop.  I was on a forum site when I noticed some random links on words that just lead to stupid search engins.
So, after a while, these windows started coming up that were just blank. I decided to see if it was just the site, so I moved to another site. Unfortuately, they kept oppening.
So then, I copied one of the sites urls and did a google search, nothing. Then I went back to the site and found the url changed. So I tried that url, this time something came up.
Sure enough, I found something about a file called GETMODULE24.EXE.
After further searching, I learned that GETMODULE24.EXE is malware and I also found out three locations that it takes root in.
I instantly killed the program and perminately delete all files (yes, I emptied the recycling bin).
Do you guys think it's gone? The popups stopped and the file didn't come back...
One of the sites wanted me to download Reg Run to delete the files, but I didn't want to take any chances with downloading something like that.
Here's where I found the files that I deleted:
C:/Program Files/GetModule
C:/Program Files/iCheck
C:/Documents and Settings/(User Name)/Application Data/GetModule
I just deleted those three folders and it seemed to have stopped. If you try this, don't forget to delete them from the recycling bin (I'm not sure if they can do anything from there or not...).
I then did a virus scan (CA)... but the weirdest thing kept happening. It kept deleting the same non-existant files in C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/' and the strangest thing is, neither the files nor the ' folder exist... and it's the same files in a loop. I let it run for almost three hours and it never stopped.
It seems to have stopped..... I haven't had any other problems all day, but I still get the random links.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

That fixed my pc once, give it a try. If it says something about a rootkit, and doesnt remove it, well, General Manson has some links for removing rootkits somewhere.

Oh, BTW. NEVER click on random links like that. EVER

I use:
AVG Anti Virus
SpyBot Search and Destroy
Adaware
and lately, I also use Super Anti Spyware, but not so much

They keep my PC rather clean.
My Firefox has AdBlock and NoScript installed which makes browsing much safer.

Before I download this, mind me asking what it is and what all it will do?
I'd rather not wipe my hard drive...
and uh, what's wrong with the links?

ComboFix is a program that will go through a computer thoroughly and remove any traces of spyware, malware, or viruses that it finds.  Before running it, empty the local folders/temp and local folders/temporary internet files for every user in order to lower the running time.  Back up any important files to a flash drive or other such device, as there is a 1% chance that your computer's OS will not survive the process.  After you run it, a DOS style window will open, and it will run.  It will ask you to restart the computer at some point, so restart it, and it will finish the cleanup when the computer comes back up.

1% eh.....
God, I hope I'm lucky.  I guess I'll run this tomarrow.
Just so I know I get the right folders, can you give me the path?

And so you guys know, I'm on XP, does that matter at all?

Try downloading hijackthis from here.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/)

Accept agreement and do a system scan and save a logfile.

Post logfile and ill let you know what to fix.

Combofix is considered a last resort before wiping a harddrive and could also damage the OS on the harddrive.

Do not fix anything without knowing what to fix first or you may permanently damage your system.

Yah, I think I'll try this first.  It said 'for advanced users only'.... just how advanced?

When you open the program just click on Do a system Scan and save a log file. Then copy the contents from the notepad hijackthis log to here and it will eventually show up when it is done scanning. Dont fix anything until i say so.

Save a log file?  Sounds pretty simple.

Post logfile when ready.

Also, it would be a good idea to burn HijackThis to a CD at some point, because I've seen a case where a piece of spyware corrupted HijackThis.  By burning it to a CD, it cannot be corrupted, ensuring that it finds everything.

Could just mark the file as read-only. Unless the spyware changes it's attributes.

How about instead of jumping right to the nukes we try some small arms.

You should be running a virus, adware, and spyware scan regularly.

Google AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Adaware.
Title: Re: You guys are good with computers, right?
Post by: Wraith on November 07, 2008, 02:45:32 AM
At most times running just those will not remove everything. Hijackthis finds alot more then those  although depending on the signatures of the files and malware everything just depends on something else is as simple as i can put it.
Title: Re: You guys are good with computers, right?
Post by: Nielk1 on November 07, 2008, 02:48:11 AM
Maybe it is just me, but after running those I have had everything clean in my PC. It might be because I do not click random links and have AdBlocker and NoScript in my FireFox, so nothing can get me unless I let it.

You SHOULD run those programs FIRST, before Hijackthis.

Setting a files attribute to Read Only does not make it read only, it is only a 'suggestion'.  Programs are still free to ignore the attribute and access the file directly to write to it.  Even if a file is loaded from a CD, it still has to be loaded into RAM, and it is very easy to hook program load and inject stuff into it (I do it to a few things on my PC).

Also, I do not run any Anti-Virus, no AntiSpyware, no nothing like that, and guess what, I have never got anything.  As long as you are smart about what you are doing, there are no real issues.  Using a computer it like using a car, you have to perform basic maintenance on a car or it dies in time, after all you do not put sand in your gas tank, and that is basically how most people treat their computers....

Yeah. Because it usually isn't either of them.

Hmmm.....How do I know that?  8-) Because... there was this guy right... and he is a loser and he clicked it and it gave him a virus and i laughed hahaha.

I do exactly the same. I do not ever have any running anti-virus programs. Because I know how what to download and not, and I don't want a virus program slowing my computer down. I want maximum performance.

My trade school teacher who teaches computer electronics tried to prove to me that my computer has spyware and viruses on it after I told him I have not installed a virus program in over two months to see if I am clean. So. that day, I left school, picked up my computer from the house and brought it over to the trade school, downloaded AVG and spybot search and destroy. I left my computer scan.. And at the end.. both programs found nothing.

I am on a beach vacation right now, before I left for the vacation I did a scan on my computer and also found nothing.. It has also been 2 months before that when I last scanned.

I feel like an idiot now. I knew this.. Just well.. I'm sure you people have all had the same situation

I only manually scan. Autoscan is off 99% of the time for me.
Title: Re: You guys are good with computers, right?

But what if someone sends you a file?

They might not have a virus scanner and could be less cautious with what they download. Its not like you are going to remember to manually scan every single file that you are sent.

It only takes one virus to slip past and your computer is slowly ruined. Autoprotect is there for a reason, even if it can slow the computer down a bit.

Even if someone sends me a file, I can be pretty sure if it's a virus. I'm not going to accept any random file from anyone. I have had people send me viruses before. Usually viruses are between 25kb-400kb. If they are sending you an .exe file, most of the times it will be larger, especially if it's an installer for a game like bz2, such as a mod.

QuoteIt only takes one virus to slip past and your computer is slowly ruined. Autoprotect is there for a reason, even if it can slow the computer down a bit.

I am the "autoprotect" of my computer. There is no reason for me to have a back seat driver telling me what to click on and what not to click on. Granted, I am advanced with computers, and other people are not, and they do need that back seat driver. I'm not trying to brag about my knowledge of computers

You can usually tell though, if someone's sending you a bogus link (to a website that will infect you) or a bogus file. Because its all automated, they will usually just send a message like "hey i think you should check out this site -- blahblahblah.com") and then it will either infect you with something, or ask for your MSN password. If you actually talk to he person and ask them what its about and they tell you, then you will know if its a virus or not -- because automated message bots aren't smart enough to understand your question and will usually say something totally inane, or in most cases nothing at all.

I am extremely paranoid, but auto protect saps way to much when I am doing things. Then again, I don't often get files from people when busy, so hence, I would have it on those rare times.

That, and I have the competence to know what can even have a virus in it. I am in college for programming after all. Anything that can be EXECUTED can have a virus (office documents included because of their support for embedded files).

Same with me, i mean i have AVG but other than a few false positives (I KNOW they are that) i rarely get any viruses. You know you could save your self the trouble and just install but it not have it run.

One last thing is, unless you just wanna say its terrible, Whats in that computer?

How about instead of jumping right to the nukes we try some small arms.

You should be running a virus, adware, and spyware scan regularly.

Google AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Adaware.
Well, I tried a scan with one of my scanners, CA, and it did the whole loop thing.  I'll try it with spybot now and see what happens.

Wow.... spybot found 4519 problems....
The report's too big to post...
It did, however, find all the files in the font folder thing.  And, being as they never came up before, I'm pretty sure they're not important to the system, so I checked them and pressed the fix button.

If it's that bad, run ComboFix.

VSMIT.

I tried ComboFix and it said something like: Cannot rename ComboFix as ComboFix[1] try another name preferably alfa numeric characters
Title: Re: You guys are good with computers, right?

Probably because theres already a combofix[1] somewhere in the folder you're in?
Title: Re: You guys are good with computers, right?
Post by: CivBase on November 07, 2008, 06:00:15 PM
So does that mean that in order to use it I have to search for this and delete the file?
*sigh* there's always a catch....
Title: Re: You guys are good with computers, right?
Post by: Zero Angel on November 07, 2008, 06:04:17 PM
No, i was just asking, because you can't rename a file to the name of a file thats already there. For example if I got a file called combofix and one called combofix[1], I can't rename combofix to combofix[1] because there's already one there.

If I am not mistaken. Internet Explorer renames duplicates with the [#] like [1], [2], [3], and so on...

Try clearing your cache in internet explorer?

Or download alternative ways.. like firefox?

I don't think that people understand what you're supposed to do when you 'run combofix'.

1) Reboot the computer and keep hitting F8 just before the "Windows XP" loading screen come up. You'll be presented with lots of options.
2) Select the one that says "Safe Mode with Networking" (to reduce the chance of the virus from loading up before you have a chance to run combofix)
3) Fire up your internet browser and go to google.com and do a search for combofix.
4) Download it, but save it to somewhere like your Desktop
5) Run Combofix

Here's the window:
And I'll do that, Zero.

That's not a real errror message from windows. Safe mode with networking is the way to go right now.

Oh, yeah, hoot.  Forgot about that.  Run ComboFix in safe mode.  Without networking, if possible.

VSMIT.

He's having trouble downloading it. He requires the internet until he gets it downloaded.

Well, I tried a scan with one of my scanners, CA, and it did the whole loop thing.  I'll try it with spybot now and see what happens.

A significant amount in there and that is a ton of entries with Spybot Search and Destroy.

http://www.spyandseek.com/mylog.php?lognum=6762 (http://www.spyandseek.com/mylog.php?lognum=6762)

Check for unknown entries. Check what is bad and restart computer and post a new log.

A bit busy today so i had to use a quick hijackthis online checker. I can check back again in a few hours.

Also update and immunize spybot Search and Destroy and under products in the tools tab right click and deselect all and then scan. Get Ad-Aware 2008 and update and tell me all of the settings for default that you have. You may have to add things to DEP. Also try to run both of those two in safe mode to get the most out of them.

Just so yah know, I fixed all the files that spybot found... as for the hijakthis, what do I do now?  What do you mean by check bad and unknown entries.  Sry, but I'm not the smartest person ever when it comes to computers...

With HijackThis, you have to be really careful that you don't delete anything that the system needs to survive.  It can be really easy to do if you don't know what a lot of the items are.

So how do I know if my computer needs the file?

By deleting it and seeing if the computer still works.  :-P

After dumping those, restart the computer and run HijackThis again.  If some of those items appear on the new list, you've got a major problem.

You could install logmein to your computer, and if you wanted, I could come on your computer and try and fix this. If you couldn't trust me, maybe other guys here could try and fix it.

Just a suggestion. I'd like to see your problem fixed.

Kaspersky Internet Security is very good, i have it installed and it does wonders.

i had AVG previously, but Kaspersky seems to excel over it, and it drains little or no CPU time.

Kasperkey is usually better on high-end performance computers. The ones Zero Angel listed and the ones i put a link for are the ones you should check off Civbase. Once removed and checked and fixed do a restart and post a new hijackthis log.

Title: Re: You guys are good with computers, right?

We keep explaining how to fix it.

And I've offered an idea to have a trusted member connect to your computer to try and help you with your problem. I'm willing to help you with that if you want to give me the trust. If you can trust me, maybe someone else who does not mind.

Check the items and click fix. Restart pc and repost a new hijackthis log. This is the last time i am posting this. Check your inbox if you want and if not o well.

Ok. Restart the computer and Get ATF Cleaner from here.

http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html (http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html)

Note: I did not get your email.

After you restart the computer run atf cleaner and check everything on the main and click empty and if you have firefox click on the firefox button and select all and empty selected. Then restart pc again. Then rescan with hijackthis log and repost.

You can check these three before doing anything else for sure.

That ntos is still in there and this does not look good.

Update Spybot Search and Destroy and download LSPfix.

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm (http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm)

Open your c drive and open the windows folder then open the system32 folder. Click tools and folder options . Click the View tab and Under where it displays Hidden Files and folders Have selected Show hidden Files and folders then click apply and ok.

Restart into safe mode and delete this manually. You may have to repat above steps to do this next step.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe Delete this file. When in safe mode.

Run Spybot Search and Destroy  and then fix everything it finds and then run LSP fix. Once complete restart into normal mode and rerun both spybot search and destroy and LSP fix. Post screenshots of LSP fix and What spybot Search and destroy found. Then repost hijackthis log.

To boot into safe mode:

Start then run.

Type in msconfig.

Select The BOOT.INI tab and check safeboot and click apply and ok and restart. When done with safe mode go back into msconfig in safe mode and unselect the safemode box click apply and ok then restart back into normal mode.

Note recheck messages.

The file doesn't exist.... yes, I have hidden files checked as usual, and it's still not there.

I had trouble extracting the LSP files though, it says they're not extracted even after I extract them.  Here's the hijackthis log, I'll post the spybot log when it's finished.

Is your computer still acting up? Because that hijackthis log looks clean to me. IOW: everything should be operating normally.

My comp hasn't been acting up since I started this thread....
And I know, I spelled it wrong but didn't save the file to edit it.  lol, it's been like that for a long time.

Are you serious? so it is fixed?

I dunno, that's what I asked you guys in the first place.
Anywho, here's (http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/CivBase/sb2.jpg) a screeny of the spybot results.
It didn't delete one of the files, something about resarting and all.

Yeah that means itll have to scan before windows explorer starts up. You should restart if it asks.

Do you have spylocked or any kind of software that starts with spy (not including spybot)?

@Zero Angel and Civbase This is the main thing on hijackthis im worried about.

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

This is also a backdoor related to things i found online. "wsnpoem" and "ntos" Try doing a search for these two and use killbox to kill them if nessacary. Do be careful with the tool. Safe mode if need be.
