Title: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: tFighterPilot on November 07, 2008, 09:33:05 PM
Does the multiplayer still working? I haven't played the game in years and don't know if I should reinstall it or not.

Yes there are.

Various people are playing MP games with a whole range of patches. Start with the 1.2 patch because there are usually more multiplayer games with it.

1.3 PB4A might be worth a shot, but a lot of people who have tried that patch report frequent dropped connections.

There is a lot of activity on versions 1.2 and 1.3 of battlezone 2 (not a LOT, but its not quite dead either most of the time). I would suggest that if you're gonna play that you make 2 different installs of BZ2. Patch one of the installs to version 1.2, and patch the other one to the latest 1.3 beta.

What ZA said.

If I'm going to install it only once, which version has more people?
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: Zero Angel on November 08, 2008, 09:50:56 AM
1.2, because of the G66 and FE games, but just barely. If you like BZ2, then you might consider making an install for 1.3 later on, because 1.3 has new features that a lot of people tend to like, but it's still in development.

Oh man, I already installed 1.3, and saw that there's nobody there :(

That could be because it is like 5 o'clock in the morning in the US and that is where nearly all the servers are.

Play in about 12 hours and there should be a few servers up of both patches.

Are there only Americans playing it? I live in Israel, so I have quite a lag playing in American servers.
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?

Mostly americans but theres quite a few aussies who play it, and even some people from the UK (and one guy from israel). I'd say that if you could divide a day into 4 slices of 6 hours each, two of those 6 hour periods would be active and the other 2 would be dead. Its just a matter of getting on at either right time of the day.

Your best bet would be to start an MPI game where you fight against the computer team, and leave it open -- sometimes someone will be bored and looking for a game and just wander in -- even when theres otherwise no other games up.

I have never seen any Middle Eastern servers. Your best bet would probably be British or European servers as they are the closest to you.

Ya, European servers would be great, too bad there aren't any.

Whenever I turn up, I never see any servers that actually work for me... in 1.3 they're all either 1.2 advert servers (sad, sad, sad) or have joining disabled. In 1.2 the search takes too long to be tolerable. Must be my connection.
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: Zero Angel on November 08, 2008, 03:40:08 PM
Theres a bug in 1.2 where it will take forever to search and then not actually show any servers, but this happens less than 50% of the time.

I see one server of 1.3, but I can't join it. It gives me connection time out.

Do you have the latest public beta? (Pb4a) If the game is of a different version, you won't be able to join it. Also sometimes if the host has BZ2 minimized then you wont be able to join. And also you won't be able to join when some people host, because of their firewall.

Just curious, was the host's name "Ace_of_Swords" ? If so, that was me, and I was tabbed out.

I agree, you can make a 2nd install and have both. It's easy to do, just hit Reinstall on the cd autorun or find + run setup.exe off the cd. When the thing shows the path, hit browse and select a different path. You can also change the name it asks for registry, so u can uninstall either one via control panel.

I live in the UK and i tend to go on around 9pm-3am as that is when all you Americans seem to come online... :P

although, i NEVER see BBB playing MP!

Also, I don't have a 'join' button, only 'join IP' and 'chat'. Join IP provides a timeout.
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: TheJamsh on November 08, 2008, 05:11:49 PM
join only appears if you select a game in white...
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: AHadley on November 08, 2008, 05:22:15 PM
So what does a game in white mean? All the ones I ever see are pink.
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: Angstromicus on November 08, 2008, 05:46:05 PM
Hmmm.... let me think back, way back...

Games which are shown in white text are using the same version as you. Games in pink text are using a different version of the game (i.e., 1.2, 1.1, etc.)

Aussie, UK and American timezones are SO DAMN CONFUSING!!!

I don't get to play that much MP due to serious modding.

And just for that, I think I will go and play right now.  :-P

in 1.3 they're all either 1.2 advert servers (sad, sad, sad)

What I want to know is how Ego got one of those to say GS version 1.3pb5.  :-o

Post by: AHadley on November 09, 2008, 04:39:51 PM
Must have missed that one.

I never see any PB4a games, but I guess Jamsh and GBD are the only two people I ever know when they're online... I should get a good game going some time.

the localize.odf has a line in it to cahnge what "version" the game uses.

GamespyVersionStr = "1.3pb4a"

Mods SHOULD use that to their advantage, like, for instance "QFpb4" or something.

Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: Zero Angel on November 09, 2008, 05:00:30 PM
Well they COULD, but they wouldnt show up in gamespy at all, if the user doesnt have -poweruser enabled. The public betas have poweruser turned on because they are testing versions.

A GamespyVersionModStr would be nice, that way it could append the current mod to the current gamespy version -- and thus if QFMod was played on version 1.3pb5, it wouldnt say QFpb4, it would say something like 1.3pb5+QFMod
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?
Post by: GSH on November 09, 2008, 11:06:46 PM
If the gamespy string doesn't match exactly, the session will be shown in red. And, before 1.3pb4, you had to /poweruser to see the server's gamespy version. I think it's better for people to be able to join (to the shell), ask what mods are in use than be denied upfront. 1.3 also checks which .pak/directories are in use, will prompt before allowing a join.

Yeah, the way it is currently isnt too much of a hassle.

it gets people talking to one another too. something the BZ2 community needs for sure. id love to know how many people are still involved with BZII... i bet it doesnt total more that 1000 :(

maybe a huge advertising campaign is whats needed :) restore the community to its glory. wouldnt that be lovely.

We need "one million fans" in order to get a BZ3 , at least that's what I believe GSH said at one time.

Ok. All modders, mod this game into a hybrid of BZ and Crysis!!
Title: Re: Are there still people in multiplayer?

I plan to mod BZ2 into a ton of engines and forms. When RockPatch2 comes out for Red Alert 2, I plan to start coding modules that simulate BZ2 and injecting them into the EXE.

Wow Nielk1, that would be awesome! RA2 players might start coming to BZ2. But since BZII can't be bought any more, I'll have to start giving away *is shot at*           :-o

I agree that BZ2 should be *gurk*
