Title: Do those Mac VS PC comercials make anyone else mad?
Post by: cheesepuffly on December 14, 2008, 02:46:44 AM
See here is the thing, they make me mad, because the fact is, PCs (XP and vista, and just the PC in general) both have ALOT of advantages over Macs.

Not that i said it was not better, they just had advantages. You see the PC guy looking like an idoit, but really i think its a better investment to get a PC more than a Mac.

Do they make anyone else mad?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLbJ8YPHwXM here is a movie XD.

Lets see; (List may be outdated, havent even touched a Mac in years)

- Better Hardware
- Actually able to switch out hardware easily (this is where Im not sure if its changed or not)
- More games designed for Windows (that you dont need any cross-platform utilities to run)
- Can be faster
- Right Click Ability

- Depends on the product.  iMacs have a 2.4GHz C2D standard, Mac Pros have 2 2.8GHz Xeons at minimum.  Best GFX card condoned by Apple is the 8800GT, but I'm sure you can use others.  Up to 32Gb RAM on a Mac Pro.
- About 75% true, Mac Pro has interchangeable hardware.
- I won't argue with you there.  But Macs easily dual boot Windows as well.
- See answer #1.
- Any mouse that works on a PC will work on a Mac.

I grew up a PC guy.  But now that I've been immersed in Macs at school, I'm finding that they're easier to use in more than a few instances.  However, you do pay for it with a lighter wallet.

-Try the core i7s on mac, or lets say a ATI 4870X2 oh wait, the dont have them in there.
-I cant really say, i have really only worked with old macs at my school. And how much of it is interchangeable? And its all in one little package, not the really spacious PC cases (Don't include mine though, my thing is cramped
-And that is true, but with a PC system with the parts mentioned above would pwn that
-See answer #1
-Yeah but, if you did try to right click with a windows mouse, would it work?

Lets bring up a few more.

-Price (like you said) PCs are alot cheaper than macs, and have better hardware (depends though)
-Customization, there are no sites that let you make your own macs with the parts you want, however PCs have www.cyberpowerpc.com and www.powernotebooks.com  (just the ones i can think of off the top of my head, there are plenty more)
-Software, more things will run for a PC than a mac
-Help, a PC i think, if you have a problem, gives you more info on the problem then a mac (not 100% sure on this so yeah)
-(not sure) Overclocking, im not sure weather a mac can do this or not.
-I like it, i like PCs that should be plenty enough reason for you to buy one. I mean if i had my own PC commercial, im sure Microsoft would make millions more.

Besides, the PC guy should have some muscles (more powerful hardware) and maybe something that a gamer would have.

I hate Mac commercials (PCs are worthless for anyone who isnt' an office stiff MY ASS)
I hate Satellite commercials (best HD MY ASS)
I hate Cable commercials (the most HD at any 1 time MY ASS)

It all pisses me off.

For the limits of a PC, here are the PC V.S. MAC and some whys:
More Software vs Less Software
because
More Software Providers vs Mostly Proprietary
which causes
More Errors vs Less Errors
which makes MAC users act just as snooty and smug as HYBRID drivers.

The above has 2 other effects that should be noted:
More Abilities vs Less Abilities
More Popular vs Less Popular
More Viruses vs Less Viruses (because who makes one that wont get use!)

Finally, it should be noted:
Macs are made by APPLE
PCs are made by many companies

So, a MAC is not only expensive, but pays a whole lot more to its primary (and in the case of MACs ONLY) OS provider's company.

MACs are toted as creative, but in reality they are rigid cages. PCs have so much more, because third party development is popular and common.

EDIT: Oh! one last thing:
PC (Windows Specifically): Handles fatal rashes with a blue screen, telling you what happened so you can find out.
MAC: Mystically freezes, tells you nothing, and screws you over till you send it to Apple owned repair for big bucks.

Actually, when Macs crash it has a gray screen of death, with necessary info.  I've had this happen once.

So your last point has become moot with OS 10.5.

Im with you here, but much more broad; I hate, hate, HATE bash ads!

Thats why I try not to watch TV during political elections.

Being so close to Oregon's borders, I have to watch not one, but TWO state's political slander ads.

Example, here's one about George Merkley for Senate:

"Senator George Merkley doesnt know where Georgia" (the country) "is, he'd rather stuff his face."
The footage was impromptu for George, as it caught him in front of an OUTDOOR RESTAURANT while he was EATING, asking him about the conflict between Russia and Georgia. Merkley made a joke (I think) about confusing the state for the country, and then proceeded to take a bite of what appears to be a Hostess style cake. The political Bash Ad took the situation and distorted it so rediculusly bad, it sounded like not being serious off the clock and EATING were a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY ITSELF.

Another Example: (I dont remember who it was, only saw this twice, thankfully)

"<Political Candidate> is a violent, crude man, yada yada, slander, smut, blasphemy."

This one was a bunch of footage of <Political Candidate> putting his hand over and pushing away cameras almost literally shoved onto his actual face, making it sound like he hates news people and punches babies.

</rant>

Thank you for your time.

I can see this rapidly turning into a mac-bashing thread.

The two massive disadvantages of the mac are their price and the fact that Apple decided to prosecute anybody who installed their OS on a PC (therefore, I used Flyakite to get the idea). I have, however, used a mac before, and I can see why they come second to Windows - they are so different. Takes a while to get used to the dock after a start menu.

Vista is of course much better than XP, except for a) price and b) the fact that it's newer, which means fewer service packs. Fewer service packs mean less fixed bugs. I am unaware if Microsoft have made it illegal for Windows to be installed on a Mac.

They have the same hardware.  Modern Macs *ARE* PC's.

Macs only come with certain hardware because the OS has been tested to the moon and back with them to make sure they work and that they work well with that hardware.

Windows will run just fine on Macs, and you can usually get a Windows license with your Mac to have them both pre-installed on the thing, you can even run them at the same time and switch between them with a hotkey (as we do at my work).

The Mac kernal is BSD, as such it can run anything BSD can, as such it can run anything Linux can, and with Windows running at the same time that lets you run just about anything in existence.

Macs price is because they are guaranteed to work, the monitors are almost stupid high quality compared to anything most people get for normal Windows-designed PC's, most Macs come with multi-button mice (all the ones at my work have come that way at least), and the support is actually decent compared to the Microsoft joke that is support (unless you are a large company paying tons of money; if you are a normal user, screw you).

Apple does not want their OS running on non-Mac tested hardware because they want to maintain their brand image of always working, and most problems people have are because of installed third-party hardware (just as most problems with Windows do not actually stem from Windows, but rather the hardware manufacturers; Macs bypass that by testing a certain subset extensively).

Some of the Macs at work the people have some of the Linux GUI's running on them (KDE, Gnome, and XFCE I have seen there), so you are not 'forced' to the Mac GUI if you really want.

Vista is a piece of crap compared to XP, yes it has some enhancements such as the TCP stack actually being from this century and enhanced threading model, nothing else of it have I seen better and XP is generally vastly superior to the other things.  Yes, we have this at work too, we do not have it installed anywhere but the public labs, though I work in Systems so I do not have to touch that crap, and no one else back in Systems is running Vista either, probably 70% run XP, 25% run Mac, and 45% run Linux, yes there is overlap because some have multiple OS's installed and switch between them... especially on the Macs...

I have never yet heard of a Mac or Linux computer here ever crashing or locking-up, yet there are plenty of interesting stories with Windows (and a couple *very* interesting stories on the one Windows server we have to have because of some licensing crap).

Yes, Right-Clicking works just fine on Macs (and Linux and Windows and near everything else that supports mice out there).

Yes, one of the stock Macs at work is overclocked.

Yes, the commercials are stupid.

Yes, many of you are also stupidly mis-informed.

Yes, this thread should be closed.

You still never see macs with the hardware i said before. Fine it might have a few bugs, but it will perform much better.

Actually...  Do you know what a "Hackintosh" is?  Many people who prefer Macs but don't like the hardware will purchase their own stuff and install OSX to it, with a little tweaking.  So you could get an i7 with 2 4870X2 cards...  I believe the most popular Hackintosh platform is the Intel Skulltrail for dual C2E CPUs.

But, wouldnt drivers for that hardware on Macs be unofficial or even more buggy?

They would be the BSD/Linux drivers, so just as stable as those, which are usually more stable then the windows counter-parts, except for videocards, which are actually getting much better as of late.

Still like i said, sure get all those, but on macs there are really no games to bring out those things power. Unless there is some kind of software on macs that uses all that graphical power.

And even though they might be upgrade able (macs in mac cases) remember, most macs are all in one, all cramped into one case with the monitor built in. Thats not bad its just, you cant really upgrade unless you get some kind of really small parts.

Those Mac vs PC ads are pointless. Most of the time they are just exaggerating about the issues that PCs have.

My PC hasn't frozen in years
My PC programs ALLWAYS respond
My PC games work 100%

My MAC stopped working during the screen saver
My MAC says that MAC programs are NOT conpatable with MACs
My MAC says that I have no HD space left when I have 236 Gigs left
My MAC won't show my iPod

I could go on and on...

Title: Re: Do those Mac VS PC comercials make anyone else mad?

Quite so.

My PC has not frozen in years.
My PC programs do *NOT* always respond quickly (might have something to do with the fact I generally have a good 150 processes up at the same time).  Although my Ubuntu installation never even hick-ups when I have a ton of stuff up.
My PC games do not always work (things like Securom start yelling and killing the games on my computer, so, again, may the makers of Securom be sodomized with a pinecone, my computer is fast, stable, secure, fully legal, and they still try to lock my out... I still need to download the cracked securom games I own just so I can play them, have still yet even been able to install them).

And yes, Mac's can play Blu-Ray's.

I haven't seen many of the commercials in question as of late. Mainly since Microsoft started THEIR version of the commercials (which I also haven't seen as of late, in favor of their Majove or whatever it is set) that don't mention Macs at all.

Still, this is a subject almost as bad as Vim vs Emacs. Why are we discussing it?

In a generally generic technically layman's sort of way, semantically/syntactically speaking, Macs are PC's in so far as the meaning of 'personal computer' goes.  Doesn't matter what generation of Mac (68000, PowerPC or modern Intel or 'tween).  Heck even my C64's are PC's (though technically they would be marketed as "HMC", home microcomputer). They're computers, period.  They just happen to have different historical backgrounds and lineages, which of course also includes the marketing (and still marketable) rift between these two parties.  I've used the classic Mac's (the small B&W monitor integrated in the chassis) back in college at the library before they were even called classics as well as the then new color Mac's.  Right beside them on the same floor were the then new AT's (including some newer 386's) and such of the time.  And because "PC" was originally a brand name model, then the only computers that should be aptly be called "PC" would be the Intel 8088-driven IBM PC & PC/XT of the early 1980's.  It just happens that the 'PC' monicker got stuck and grandfathered into the next generations of the IBM's, IBM clones, and compatibles all the way to up to the compatibles we have now. These current "PC's" should really be called "IBM compatibles" (including modern Apples), but who wants to say that mouthful?  As far as superiority, I suppose that depends on their useage.  Perhaps someday the technologies between them will intertwine more and more that it won't care whether they be ['Wintel'] PC or Mac.

Oh right, Majove...

MS grabbed a ton of ppl, showed them VIDEOS of Vista working perfectly, and said it was the next windows. The sheeple followed their lead, and then were shocked! It was really Windows Vista.

The customer is WRONG! See, See! But Vista! But it! Don't listen to other educated opinions, but it now!

Truthfully, you shouldn't turn down vista before you have the facts. Then once you have googled them, THEN and only THEN can you curse it down. I, using most of the features of vista, have run into very little problems.

For those who don't know, the choice to turn off UAC "Naggatron 1000" is on the User Accounts menu. Do so if you are the only one who uses the PC. The thing HELPS from some crap getting on your pc and crippling it until you decide to take action.)

Yes, adding "/nointro* and */win* is so VERY vital to the OS's existance that it bugs me TWICE about it everytime I edit my shortcuts...

Also, they should at least keep a list of what programs i allow to run as admin, they dont need my blessing to run EVERY time.

You are missing the point here. The idea is following the concept of least privilege which *nix systems have had for a long time. Even if you trust program x to run as admin, do you want it to start up without you knowing about it? The default config for Vista in this regard isn't that secure. My current settings have Vista ASK for my password for administrative tasks. So I can forget to lock my screen, walk away from the keyboard and not have to worry about someone quickly loading up the user management and adding a new user and stuff like that. Makes it really difficult for a trojan/virus to do admin tasks too.

Of course, if you don't like the UAC, you can turn it off.

What on earth are you speaking of?

LUA is a scripting language, nothing to do with windows.  And I am guessing you meant "LUA admin", which still does not make any sense...
