Title: XBOX 360 Red ring of death
Post by: TheJamsh on December 18, 2008, 11:07:11 PM
yep. it happened to me about half hour ago...

thought id relax this evening with some crap food, and gears of war. only for my xbox to suffer what microsoft call a 'core digital' or 'general hardware' failure

this has pissed me off beyond belief with microhoot. i dont think ill buy a new product from them again. their reputation has seriously dropped in my books.

Just send it to Microsoft. They'll fix it.

I think the worst one is 3 lights. That happened to me once and I had to send my xbox all the way to Sydney to be fixed.

Thankfully it has worked since.

Glad I'm just on PC. Worst I get is bluescreen, which most of the time I can fix myself :)

Theres fixes for that you can do yourself. Most of them involve opening up your 360 and reseating or replacing the heatsink (some of them have to do with an "x clamp" which you must replace). If your 360 isnt under warranty anymore then check your local online classifieds (craigslist, kijiji, etc) for someone who can fix that. If you live in a big or medium city there will be people who do that kind of thing for less than 60 USD (or whatever the equivalent of that is in your country).

Just had an interesting argument about this... how many of you have got an RROD on a supposedly 'immune' Elite?

I doubt very many have considering the newest revision, the jesper series, were released in October.  I believe the manufacture date was October 23rd.  I just bought an elite which unfortunately was made in September meaning it wasn't a Jesper :(.

my friend has had three cases of RROD on a standard XBOX, and two cases on an 'elite' XBOX. The problems come from insufficient cooling, using stupid soldering between joints.

My product IS under warranty, hence why i havent opened it up myself because no doubt they've got a bastard warranty seal on it. The issue is, i have no reciept, as the XBOX came as part of my phone contract.

they are going for about £129.99 atm with a game (standard console). i believe microhoot have made some modifications and adjustments since a year and a half ago, but theres still a 16% failure rate. pathetic...

See http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3472 (http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3472), especially the second page, where they have handy guides to check the amperage rating on the X360 and translate that into X360 revision.

lol, I've had the RRoD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sris5X4BDqg) three times.  Still think Xbox 360 is better than Wii (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6HEOpl01uM).
PS3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfmBzllkbUM) is cool... but it is kinda expensive.

My bro-inlaw bought a refurbished X360 online a few months ago.  Not surprisingly it got the RRoD after only a few hours of play.  We tried the towel trick, but it didn't work and there was no way I was going to (or wanted to) open up the damn thing.  He brought it back to the internet shop he got it from to see if they could fix it and they kept it for a long time, but he got it back.  Eventually after, he went the Microsoft way and sent it to them.  They paid for the S&H as well.  According to him, it works dandy now, I think (haven't played games on it myself).

you know, Im usually late to these dang posts, but most of it is because when you open your xbox 360 all the way, There is a fan, and on that level is ice cold, but some *Ammo*ing genius at microsoft is a *Ammo*ing idiot and put the X-Clamps and the main chips on the bottom, Instead of growing a brian, he just put some heat asorbing sponges on, They don't work at all, if you want to get your xbox back and working again, and do it for like 5 cents. Do what this video says, I've done it and it works for just about every problem.

The guy is a little corny, But it's kinda funny, And it works, he explains everything easyily done.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsz0lNJ6JrQ&fmt=18

EDIT: Now, If your asking yourself, how does this work, this guy has done his homework, read the desciption

EDIT(2): Now the only thing that im skepctical about is the towel trick, if you can avoid it don't use it, It's a terrible thing, if used wrong it can wreck your system

yep. consoles are good for some things, but PC's pwn in most circumstances.

seen plenty of broken PS3's so far as well. i believe theres is the 'yellow' light of death or something.

It is just a PS2 controller with some extra lights...

I prefer the 2 joysticks next to each other to the XBOX/GameCube way.

Hmm, That sounds interentsing, I just never found the PS2 appealing anyway, cept for the large gamebase

Really?

And yeah the PC pwns all, but i dont see so many games that i want on it. And it would cost $400 to get a blu ray drive for my PC anyway.

*long and exagerated "pffft' here*

BEHOLD, A BLUE-RAY FOR LESS: NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=598&name=Blu-Ray-Drives)

Also, unless you want 360 games, pc is not your "console"... However, if you seek the treasures to which no console gamer has access too....

STAY IN FRONT OF THE MONITOR.  :-D

Yeah... the one i am thinking of is high quailty.

Either way, LittleBigPlanet was the game i wanted that made me get a PS3.

Still, the PC is the greatest of all, too bad pirating is killing it.

LIES.
They use pirating as the scape goat for making DRM.
DRM is to stop all forms of 'used games sales'.

Still, if a game comes out for the 3 high tech systems (PS3, 360, PC) the PC sales are for the most part always the worst.

Mainly due to the fools who still think their consoles are superior, simply because the graphics aren't as good all the time. Graphics are of little consequence to a proper gamer.
Title: Re: XBOX 360 Red ring of death

The PC ALWAYS has the best graphics. Its just it costs more to get that.
Title: Re: XBOX 360 Red ring of death
Post by: AHadley on April 29, 2009, 07:57:47 PM
You sure PC always has the best graphics?

It does cost more to get them though, but a bog-standard office PC won't have better graphics than a PS3 or 360. Hell, it will struggle with PS2 standard.

graphic performance also comes down to the game itself, how its programmed etc.

playing BZ2 as it is programmed now for example, it wont look any prettier on an xbox. what you see is what you get.
