Title: explorer.exe problem.
Post by: cheesepuffly on January 13, 2009, 03:20:34 AM

My explorer.exe process has been taking alot of CPU power (yes i know what it does, and no my computer is not crap) lately and i know that can mean a virus is somewhere, if i restart it (just the process) it then works fine. Any fixes?

You using the free version?  That might only be available in the purchased version.

Ok what are your system specs and how much ram does explorer.exe take up?

Also a hijackthis log would be helpful.

methinks its a virus. i had the same problem with a fairly old laptop. explorer.exe of svchost.exe would absoultely own my CPU time. in some cases i had other little processes pop up for a second then dissapear.

hijackthis is the best option, but if not, do a system restore so you can start yoiure computer from scratch. and i suggest you do it before you cant use youre CD drives, that what the virus did to me.

Same. Bad cases of possibly vundo could do this so yes post a hijackthis log when possible. It can be found here and dont fix anything until i say so.

Grab sysinternals auto-runs, see what latches on to explorer (shell extensions, etc). Also, go to your folder options and tell it to launch folder windows in a separate process.

another good automatic scanner that i can think of off the top of my head is malwarebytes

a good virus scanner that you dont have to install is sysclean from trend micro but make sure you download the latest pattern file before you scan

you can find both of them easily enough with google
