-mIRC (Same)
-the .BAT Messenger  :-D
-IE8 (My mother doesn't allow meh to uninstall!)
-Firefox (With an entire stash of 60 extensions)  :-P
-uTorrent

For System
-AVG Free :-D
-(*System maintenance stash*) Smart Defrag, Registry Defrag, CCleaner, File Shredder, RegToy, CPU Speed, UPX Frontend (haha!)
-Ad-Aware (AE)
-Update Checker :-D
-SpeedFan
-Meo Encryption Software

For OTHER STUFF
-Editra (Don't know how to use it, will be uninstalling later)

Yes it's a Vista 32 bit Home-Pre. DAMMIT my mother won;t allow me to install 64-bit!

No, not to say that my mother is so *Whatever*. Post your set if you want to share it too.

So, um, should I get Notepad++ or Editra as my text editor?
Title: Re: Best software?
Post by: TheJamsh on February 02, 2009, 02:35:22 PM
just use notepad. nothing wrong with it.

i use arachnophelia sometimes. ZA pointed me in its direction and its a pretty good program and allows you to edit textures in .msh files without buggering them up like notepad does. (notepad does not work with binary, at least, not .msh's form of it)
Title: Re: Best software?
Post by: Angstromicus on February 02, 2009, 03:24:50 PM
I noticed some text files are displayed as one line in notepad, instead of having "enter"'s in the line like displayed in wordpad.
Title: Re: Best software?
Post by: Nielk1 on February 02, 2009, 08:24:49 PM
That is because thy do not have the end line character notepad recognizes (\n)

In C++ I always use std::endl since it includes both \n and the other character wordpad recognizes, \f I think. Oddly, if they both appear, the \f is not seen in notepad, but if only the \f is there it is a box. Again, I think it was \f (escape character F) but I am not sure.

It has been the bane of my existence in some programming instances.

EDIT: Turns out it is \r not \f, read GSH's link and it shows all 3, \n, \r, and \n\r.

Line endings vary by platform. Apple does it one way. Unix does it another way. MS-DOS (and derived) does it a third way. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newline) for more info.

Good editors (i.e. NOT notepad) recognize all three variants, and do the right thing.

Yea, Arachnophila 4.0 is an OLD HTML editor I used to use, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can edit the text inside of binary files without breaking them. (In the case of MSH files, when you edit textures, they need to have the same amount of characters as the original texture)

this is most of my software

- audacity (audio editing). i use it for music recording, editing, and for annoying people on vent  :-D(recording someones voice then playing it over and over )
- bitlord
- DAEMON Tools Pro
- Diskeeper Corporation
- DVD Shrink
- fraps (although i am actively searching for new software, since the video size and cpu usage piss me off with this, someone pls tell me of a good program that can record bz2!!)
- GIMP
- KMplayer (media player)
- LimeWire
- Sibelius (music composition software, also supports guitar tabs etc). another good program is 'finale'. i recommend against guitar pro due to limitations.
- super (video file conversion)
- Ventrilo
- Zone alarm

Ac/dc, use virtualDub to reprocess fraps video or else they are HUGE. They say to do that online somewhere, I forget where.
Title: Re: Best software?
Post by: Ac/dc on February 05, 2009, 08:34:36 AM
yes thats the problem. atm i just use windows movie maker to compress them. is it possible to compress them into smaller vids austomatically? this would be extremely helpful!! :-)

- Diskeeper Corporation

Ya might wanna consider changing to Smart Defrag, a free alternative to DisKeeper and PerfectDisk.

Use a H264 codec for best quality/size ratio. Use Huffyuv for best lossless compression.

*I'm speaking about codecs, of course. So get some video compression software that supports Microsoft Video (AVI) and/or MPEG4. Download codecs here: http://www.cccp-project.net/. Google for Huffyuv and use it through ffdshow (I belive ffdshow comes with CCCP, otherwise, use the codec pack that comes in CCCP). I believe hou get H264 through apple quicktime.

Not automatic, but I encode fraps videos with divX but with a noticeable loss of quality. Look at my recall mine Youtube video.

omfg are fraps programmers so *Ammo*ing retards to not have picked up on this problem by now? seriously, 1 gigabyte per 10 secs... wtf were they thinking lol, i cannot believe they charge money for this....

thx btw, although i got no problem with compressing the vids, i would however be very greatful if there was something that could compress the videos automatically, prefebly as soon as they are made

Does anybody here think of OpenSource before they buy stuff?!

What a rip-off!!!

So next time, before you hit the BUY button, check osalt.com for a free (and better) alternative.

And, uh, that's exactly what I do, however, OpenSource software may be a little complicated to use as compared to commercial software, though. (But some aren't, like AIRC and VLC.)

EDIT:

Mind telling me why you got TWO torrent programs?

No, they did it on purpose, If you look it up, they have maximum possible compression on a video of that resolution made at that speed without impacting game play.

Helps if you actually KNOW what they are. Limewire is P2P yes, but it does not use torrent files. If it does, and I am wrong, it uses them silently telling you nothing as you search for what you want IN IT and get it that way, not by downloading torrent files. Limewire however has less legal uses than bittorent clients.

it still perplexes me as to why they dont have an option to make them smaller

*Edited for vulgarity.

oops got a little carried away in the last post

I found a desktop recording program that has a decent sized bitrate and works fine with bz2 (although i think you have to tab out to start it). its called SuperVideoCap, but the torrents for the full version dont work :S, and the trial version only records 10 secs which wont be much help.

ill keep yall posted as soon as i can get it working

If its the trial get it from their site, if its full that is illegal and should not be done and at the very least not talked about here.

Someone suggested I try CamStudio. I think that was the name. It is free and legal!

tried it. doesnt work with bz2 and like fraps, has a big bitrate which was the problem in the first place.

CamStudio is a desktop recorder (basically a video output interceptor) and is EXTREAMLY useful in recording anything fraps and other programs cannot.

It works for me very well and is what i use to record 3DS Max tutorials and occasionally BZ2 in windowed mode.

After you save using CamStudio, it will be in .AVI format. Use 7-Zip to compress that file by 99%... Or use another format, MP4 is recommended (By me).
Title: Re: Best software?
Post by: Warfreak on February 15, 2009, 03:54:52 PM
Unless someone can find me a .avi compressor (besides bink, takes ages and .biks are NOT compression), then eys thats how I do it.

Throw it into 7zip and smashes a 8 gig file to 80 mbs. Beautiful. :D

And, of course, 7-zip does "lossless compression". I don't know of any codecs that could be that efficient at lossless compression, though. About the best I've seen is Huffyuv which does about 40-50 percent of the size of the uncompressed video, maybe smaller sometimes.

WF's movie files are extremely light. Very low density. But still LARGE.

And .AVI movies can be compressed by 99%... imagine having a huge tripler... then squashing it and saving it for later... And you can still open it back up to savour it ALL... That's what it's like.
