Title: Multiplayer Ranking System
Post by: TheJamsh on April 08, 2009, 11:37:20 AM
In the not-to distant future, i would like to encompass some sort of ranking system similar to the XBOX system, where registered online users can submit game results and other bonus things they've uncovered.

Achieving certain things in game would give you a code. Using this code on youre web-based account would add details or achievements to youre name, which cannot be faked and are well-protected.

Its not something thats feasible with stock bz2, but how might a mod go about something like this? Im thinking about how this could be done effectively and it might even encourage people to play more...

Throw some ideas around...

We should perhaps tie this in to Nielk1's Acheivements idea. Maybe in the time being we should build up the system and use a witness/vouch method to acheive at least some level of security, and work a DLL around to try and get it into one of the patches.

If I ever get to it.

I not, we'll have to train up another C++ wizard...

Oh dear.

Overmind might come along this thread... and have some free time... but i doubt it lol

It could encourage people to play multiplayer more and even involve new players in it. Competition is always a good driver...

OM has no free time, and I am not a wizard. I just happen to know some C++ and it gets me by.

Free time?  What is this 'free time'?

I have not slept in about 50 hours, swamped with homework, 17 credit hours of classes, and full time work (of which I go to in 45 minutes).  Yea, I know not the concept of 'free time'...

Ask me this summer, assuming I do not hibernate for a few months to catch up on sleep....

I have not slept in about 50 hours

A slight exaggeration perhaps?

You would literally be dead.

I believe it is somewhere around a month to 2 months you can go without sleep before you die from it.

Or maybe it was 1-2 weeks...I dunno...

Only if you dose yourself to the limit with caffeine and amphetamines.

Not sure of its accuracy, but it was mentioned on the show "House", that the record for going without sleep was 11 days, and this patient hasn't slept in 10 days, so you've got 24hrs, house.  Granted its a show, and its probably not true.

After 2-3 days without sleep, your body starts trying to make you sleep under normal conditions.  It will try harder as you go without sleep more.  You exhibit drunk-like symptoms sorta, or thats what has always happened to me.   17hr course load would be rough without work.

That's 17 hours a week in class(if its normal), and then 40hrs a week in work.  If its 17hr like my old classes used to be, one of them was 10hrs a week, yet claimed to be a 3hr class(granted it was half a term class, so you half the hours down to 5, but still 5 does not = 3).

57hrs a week in class/job, or equivalent of an 11hr job 5 days a week, then add on homework for 5, 6? classes.

That 11-day record is held by a guy from Canada, who is a bloody idiot.

Yeah your brain starts slowing down. You get extremely irritable and act almost "drunk". Eventually you will just pass out.

I actually slept a good 4 hours, that felt good.  :)

Now just got home from a lab today, now for more homework.  This is one of my only days off of work so I may actually get a full 6 hours of sleep tonight.

But yea, this ranking system should not be too hard at all, just take a little bit of time, and I could hook into normal dll's too so it could be supported everywhere.  As stated though, ask in just under 2 months...

Yeah, agreed.

Nielk1 and Steeveeo were throwing around some ideas either here or on BZComplex, I think, but I can't seem to find them. Steeveeo suggested having acheivements for each mod too, which I think would be a very good idea... but it will mean releasing a full acheivements pack for said mod.

Maybe one of you guys could link us to the page you were discussing it on?
