The swine flu started in Mexico and has begun spreading to America and other countries around the world. The swine flu has been given a "Phase 5" alert, which means a pandemic is more than a possibility.
Quote from: CDCIn response to an intensifying outbreak in the United States and internationally caused by a new influenza virus of swine origin, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 5 on April 29, 2009.

Discussion Questions:
Should we be worried? If not, WHEN should we start being worried? What are some things we can do to prevent it from spreading? What should you do if you get it? What factors tell whether Swine Flu is deadly to a person or not?
Swine Flu FAQ from CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/27/swine.flu.qanda/?iref=mpstoryview).
phase 6 is isolation, all borders are closed, if that's what you mean by your question and it is a pandemic already
It is not yet a pandemic from what I'm aware of.
I thought a pandemic is when it spreads to 2 country's and at least 2 people in one of the regions inside the each of the country's.

It'll never get Madagascar though, so we're safe.
GOOD GOD!
This thing has a lower kill % than the common flu.

Its like 5x worse in Mexico then it is anywhere else. I think the colder it is, the less it will effect that area and the infection will be minor
Look, I have to agree with nielk, This thing is harmless, So you get the flu, just because we wern't ready for it doesn't mean crap, And mexico has bad healthcare in some areas, People die all the time from that area, Im not to worried unless it mutates and starts to kill, I am not even worried about it.
it already HAS killed PH...
Yes, many Mexicans in areas with poor health conditions to START with (Speaking of Mexico City), and a 24 or so month old with a family living on a farm in Texas.
Besides, if your area has good health AND you are near a hospital (A 30min drive at the least), you should be fine... just head to hospital like you normally would if you come down with the flu.
The vast majority of people it's killed so far already had something else - pneumonia, for example.
No, it gives them Pneumonia.
What i ment was if it started to kill those in areas with good healthcare.
Quote from: bigbadbogie on May 01, 2009, 07:17:55 AM
No, it gives them Pneumonia.
In Mexico, you go to a hospital to die more than to be treated, so they would get Pneumonia from lack of treatment. They could get it from the common cold even.
Basically, Mexico is not a very nice place to be if you want a hospital to keep you alive.

They assure us you cannot catch it from eating pork. But pigs do catch it. In order to avoid catching it from people we are told to wash our hands...So how is it that Pork is safe? Do all the pigs scrub up nice and clean before they go to the slaughter house? What protects the cook from catching it from uncooked meat?
I sense a little lie here, I suspect commercial interests are being protected at any cost.
Because people aren't getting swine flu... they are getting a new form of influenza which is a combination of swine flu, bird flu and human flu genes.
I don't know why it is still known as swine flu. It should be known as Influenza A.
It's going to go through as many name changes as the US war has gone through already.

The virus is killed at 160 degrees (Fahrenheit). Unless you assume that's a lie too...

So anyone who takes a hot bath is cured?
Anyone who cooks their food can avoid it :P
QuoteCooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

If we were to cook a human who had it and then eat them, we would not get it.

Because viruses are forms of life. It can be argued that we are viruses by our actions instead of classifying us by our makeup.

Well, try that. See you in the burn ward.

Adult: If the temperature is 160 degrees Fahrenheit, it would take 1 second [to cause a third degree burn];
What if I were to sit in a huge oven on some heatproof object and I am cooked that way?
It would be frikkin hot, but it would kill the virus without causing any burns.

Hot air burns you, and if you shelled yourself from that hot air you wouldn't get hot.

^Should learn the 3 types of cooking: Convection, Conduction, and Radiation.
My point was, that pigs are catching the mutated version from humans. So what is there to stop a cook from catching it from uncooked meat?
Nothing. I just see people telling us that we cannot catch it from their products, when they almost certainly have no idea if this is true or not.

Haha i hate Madagascar. after three hours of play and probably twenty tries you might get it infected.
but i think that the swine flu is being over exaggerated by the media, like they always do. Remember a year ago when they were predicting millions upon millions being killed by the avian flu? i looked up the swine flu on the CDC and its symptoms are almost identical as the seasonal influenza. the only problem is that since its a newer form of the swine flu it lasts a little longer in humans since our resistance isn't built up to the new strain. at least thats what i understand from it.
The flu is not present in the meat of the pig. If you ate uncooked pig lungs or stomachs then you might get it. Having a virus doesn't make you the virus (unless... (http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20050727/flood.jpg)).

Because they don't have a metabolism and we do, it can be argued that viruses are not alive.
Maybe they say that because we do have one that we aren't alive.

Whats the difference between a pandemic and an epidemic?
pandemic, more severe than an epidemic
There was a certified case of swine flu in paignton UK, a place only a couple of hours from my home town.
Epidemic would be over more than one country/continent i think, so now it is am i right?
I think an epidemic is when it strikes seriously but is limited to one of two countries.
Pandemic would be when it hits... five, i think.

He brings up an interesting arguement. (My folks drive down to Mexico to visit relatives every summer; Even then, they live in the chunk below Cali, "Baja California")
My cousin has just tested positive for Swine Flu.
It is also entirely possible that I may have it... and my family.
We all have some kind of bad flu... and we all feel like crap.
The state of Victoria has recently been proclaimed to be the Swine Flu capital of the world... and I just happen to live there.

Well, though the infection rate is much higher, if you would have survived the normal flu you should survive this. Strange when you consider it contains the dreaded bird flu and is even also called H1N1, its basically just a super infective form of the common flu.
People who get treated for it with fluids via IV do well.
Hey, it's official!
"The world is moving into the early days of its first influenza pandemic in the 21st century," Chan told reporters. "The (swine flu) virus is now unstoppable."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090611/ap_on_he_me/un_un_swine_flu
its stoppable. we just have to boil the earth.
Its not like AIDS, get treatment and your fine.
Until it mutates... then everybody starts dying.
It might be a good idea to actually contract the virus right now while it is still mildish.
Once you get over it, you will have some extra immune resistance to it.

Unless im wrong, something like the swine flu can mutate to outsmart an antibiotic but it could not mutate to outsmart a human immune system correct?
You can't kill a virus with an antibiotic. And outsmarting the human immune system is what HIV does best. It mutates quickly enough to stay ahead of the body.
maybe we should find a way to update the human immune system. Nvm that wouldn't be right. sumthing like jurrassic park might happen.
That's what vaccines are for.
There isnt enough smiting going on.

It's IBM upgrading the customers.
Feels like i have man-bird-pig flu. Got up at 5:45 AM, bed at 11 PM, awake at 1:30 AM all hot and achy, but have chalked it up to sunburn and muscle strain.
It just feels the same as ordinary flu... nothing more severe so don't worry if you happen to catch it.
Quoteman-bird-pig flu
Lol.
Well, Bird Flu (H5N1) was apparently going to be our next pandemic and that blew over. Pretty quickly too, no recorded human deaths. Swine Flu (H1N1) seems to be little different to me, though there are a few deaths (a miniscule amount when compared to how long it's been around) these people were just unlucky, it will soon pass over despite its 'pandemic' status.
I really cant believe its a pandemic, its unfrigginbelievable.
A pandemic just means it's spreading like wildfire. Doesn't mean it's dangerous. Ebola is super-infectious, but it kills people before it can spread too far. Other things spread, but don't kill the host.
The main thing to watch out for is that in previous big pandemics, there was a low-strength virus spreading in the spring. Then it mutated, and was really dangerous in the fall.
-- GSH
All pandemic means is that there are a significant number of cases in a signisicant number of countries, doesn't mean its doing much to the infected in most cases.
