Nielk1's I'm gan'na edit this with some large stuff post

Lets start with the good old days of Battlezone

The National Space Defense Force (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=NSDF)
Story
The Resolve of the Stars n' Stripes
With research and development moving along at full speed, both the Soviets and Americans hit a brick wall in their mutual lack of bio-metal. The supposed "vunder-substance" that Arkin ranted endlessly about was in extremely short supply on Earth. Neither side had enough to complete more than a few vehicles.

Fortunately for both nations, the Blitzkrieg mentioned in Kranken's memo took far longer than he'd intended. By early July of 1947, when the moon Nazis finally packed into large carrier ships for the invasion of Earth, they were tired, hungry, and desperate.

It didn't help morale at all when half of the German invasion force was obliterated upon descent to Earth by American rockets. And the ones who did reach the Arctic region had little time to prepare for battle, as they were greeted unceremoniously by the U.S.'s small but well-positioned new army. After an intense land battle that lasted only a few hours, the weakened German forces retreated back into space.

As this was happening, The Russians and Americans were already scouring the Earth in search of bio-metal debris from the shot-down carrier crafts. With the exception of an isolated mishap in the vicinity of Roswell, New Mexico, all of the bio-metal was recovered and immediately put into use on new units. Within days, both sides were following the fleeing Nazis back into space.

Before the year was out, the German forces had been eliminated in an epic three-way conflict. But the war had taken its toll on the victors as well. The NSDF and CCA had grown too much too fast and the bio-metal supply had once again dwindled. Attention turned to the mounting tensions back home. During this time, the non-Earth forces enjoyed a period of relative peace.

It wasn't until the Bering Strait meteor shower of 1952 that the space conflict went back into full swing. Neither Stalin nor the newly elected Eisenhower could afford the risk of giving the enemy the upper hand, so both sides had to fight as if the world - perhaps the entire solar system - was at stake. While they put on quite a show for the masses down below, the true cold war was just beginning.

Units
The following units developed over the course of the CCA/NSDF conflict to play a vital role in the NSDF's ultimate victory:

Razor
The front end of the US attack force, the Razor was built for speed and agility with only modest armament to aid in combat. It was designed primarily as a reconnaissance vehicle.

While the canopy design was almost identical, dubbing the Razor a variant of the P-47 "Thunderbolt" fighter plane would be a massive understatement. It was retrofitted with twin V-thruster engines and a unique tri-mounted stabilizer system, granting it speed bursts of up to 60 meters per second. Later modifications on the exhaust ports allowed the engine's thrust to be aimed in any direction, giving the Razor a lightning fast turn speed as well as limited vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability.

Grizzly
Based on the successful M60 series of ground tanks, the A7 Grizzly was an extraordinarily versatile fighter and the backbone of the NSDF forces. Its wide selection of armaments made it a devastating presence in almost any combat situation, while its 6-point Articulated Exhaust V-Thruster array provided 2000 horsepower and the ability to reach speeds of 50 meters per second.

Though once among the most agile attackers in the NSDF, the Grizzly was weighted down enormously by its special grade of bio-metallic armor, capable of equally distributing damage (EDD) over the entire craft. This fortified the vehicle by making concentrated attacks on any single part of the exterior ineffective.

Badger
The M173 Badger was a vital defensive unit, best suited for use along the perimeter of a friendly base. Once there, it immobilized and deployed its STAB hooks (Stabilized Terrain Adapting Base). The low-weight turret locked into the terrain before firing to avoid kickback and maintain accuracy. The Badger could be repositioned when needed, but it could not fire when its STAB unit was not deployed.

Because of the turret's slow turn rate, the Badger was most effective within a ridge or canyon pass where an oncoming vehicle could not maneuver around it. If used in this capacity, one unit could handle multiple attackers.

Scavenger
A vacuum cleaner of sorts, the Scavenger roamed the battlefield autonomously, gathering scrap from downed vehicles. By retrieving precious bio-metal for reuse, the Scavenger increased the stamina of NSDF forces beyond measure and changed the way wars were fought.

Recycler
The Recycler was the primary building unit for the NSDF, and a necessity for establishing a presence in unclaimed territory. It was weaponless, but heavily armored and able to withstand extended attacks.

In its mobile form, the Recycler could move freely across the battlefield. Once positioned over an energy-producing geyser, it deployed, exposing the massive construction facility stored within its hull. In this state, the Recycler could build vital base resources and unit supplies, as well as basic offensive and defensive units.

Cosmo Colonist Army (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=CCA)
Story
The Red Menace In Space
The Americans weren't the only ones picking through the rubble. In those feverish days after the fall of Berlin, the Russians found their most valuable spoils of war in the ruins of bombed-out factories and underground laboratories. Though the papers and documents were destroyed, much of the hardware used to build the first German space vehicles was still in working order.

Without knowing what the finished product would be, Russian engineers began tinkering with the recovered machinery. It quickly became clear that the German technology was decades - no, light years - ahead of any other nation. It was also clear that these vehicles were not intended for use on Earth.

With the U.S. and the Soviet Union becoming fast enemies, the first step was to find out what the other side knew. Then, once cloak and dagger had leveled the playing field, the Soviets became consumed with building a new army and getting up there [Where? The moon, or space in general?] first. The Americans had Dr. Arkin and his firsthand experience, but one man could only know part of the picture for a process as complex as this. The Russians had the tools needed to do the job. The game had begun.

The following vehicles mark the height of Soviet ingenuity. They were every bit a match for what the Americans were building, and worthy successors to the original German designs.

Units
Flanker
The Flanker was a cheap, fast, and heavily used offensive fighter. Its broad, wing-like appendages made it an easy target, but they also enabled tight maneuverability and effectiveness in close range dogfights. The Flanker best demonstrated the Soviets' ability to blend unique and innovative designs into the less daring templates provided by the Germans.

Czar
A clear counterpart to the NSDF's Grizzly, the Czar traded speed and versatility for thicker armor and a higher ammo capacity. With Flankers to keep the enemy moving, the presence of two or more Czars in a skirmish could dominate any combination of NSDF fighters. Enemy pilots could dodge the Czar's attacks with relative ease, but sooner or later they would have to face its awesome endurance in direct combat.

Stoli
Indicative of the low value placed on the soldier's life, the Stoli was viewed by CCA pilots as a high-yield suicide machine. It carried powerful weaponry that could eliminate weaker enemies before they knew what hit them, but a Stoli pilot caught in an extended melee had little hope of survival. As a result, they were usually found pulling up the rear, with the far more durable Czars pressing through in front.

Grendel
Used mostly as a siege unit, the Grendel packed the firepower to destroy Recyclers and buildings quickly, but lacked the speed or versatility to defend against moving attackers. It often required a large escort guarding closely to reach its target safely. Nonetheless, it was a vital asset to the CCA in challenging NSDF fortifications.

Golem
Influenced heavily by recovered alien technology, the Golem was the strongest and most powerful unit of any Earth-based military. With its thick, tree-trunk legs replacing the standard hover jets, the Golem could carry an enormous blast cannon and fire from high above the battlefield. Its one drawback was speed. This limitation all but ruined its effectiveness as an offensive unit, relegating it primarily to guard and protective duties.

The Third Reich (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Reich)
Story
Biometal
It is common thought amongst most that the Space Race was the truth. It is knowledge to some that it was a lie and we were long before already on the moon. But it is known to very few the truth of when. Jon Beardsly (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Jon_Beardsly) was the source of the first biometal on Earth, NOT the meteor shower in the Bearing Straights. You see, this man was the first of any human who made it to the moon by their own hand. This man created a fusion rocket and made it to the moon and brought back the samples of biometal that the Nazis would later use in their attempt at space. (Click the link for more.)

A Failure
The Germans made it to the moon, but they died shortly there after. The limited supply of biometal was melted down and used in alloys to create their ships. Not realizing the biometal was compromised, the Nazis relied on it for protection and as a result died from the radiation absorbed passing though the Van Allen belts.

Early Constructs of the Reich
Hitler had initially directed his scientists and technical people to follow Beardsly's concept drawings and outlines, but it soon became apparent they were ill-suited to military purposes. The models offered here are based on designs discovered in an underground vault in the former East Berlin in 1991. It is unclear how many of these vehicles were actually constructed.

Sturm
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Bz_reich_unit_sturm.jpg)
Type: Scavenger
Translation: gale, gustiness, storm, tempest, turbulency
Because of the severe shortage of building material available on the moon, Hitler's engineers were convinced that salvage from damaged or abandoned vehicles and equipment would be essential. This particular design was based on a technical drawing made by Jon Beardsly himself.

Rovenkampf
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Bz_reich_unit_rovenkampf.jpg)
Type: Recycler
Translation: rob; battle, campaign, fight, struggle, contest
A giant recycling center, slow but heavily armored. Once deployed on the moon's surface, the Rovenkampf was designed to make use of the moon's geysers as a source of power for the fabrication of war machines using bio-metal. It is also believed that Hitler had a modified version of these behemoths designed for terrestrial duty on giant oil rig-like platforms in the North Atlantic, though none were ever actually built.

Jagvespe
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Bz_reich_unit_jagvespe.jpg)
Type: Scout
A versatile raider, the Jagvespe sports a medium sized V-thruster with a tapered chassis. The vehicle has two power plants that are mounted on swept outriggers that extend slightly from the sides of the craft. The Jagvespe's armor was light, but it was fast and maneuverable, helping to facilitate Hitler's desire to bring the Blitzkrieg to space. (It is rumored that the Soviets uncovered a prototype for this vehicle in a underground workshop in Dresden, but no official record of the discovery has been found.)

Bezirker
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Bz_reich_unit_bezirker.jpg)
Type: Artillery
Translation: Seemingly that which makes areas; borough, canton, district, precinct, circuit

This small self-propelled medium-range artillery turret was to provide the primary defense for German bases on the moon. Its turret would have been able to swivel rapidly, although its gun mount could never have been very powerful. A group of these little devils operating in tandem, however, could chew up all but the heaviest armored vehicles. It is unclear how the Germans planned to hold the turret in place once it reached its desired position on the battlefield.

Vossketen
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Bz_reich_unit_vossketen.jpg)
'''Type:''' Tug
A squat, small craft with a massive Vortex generator toward the rear of the vehicle, the Vossketen was the tug utilized to move structures. The chassis was bulbous and heavily armored, with a top-mounted single-man cockpit. The dual power plants located at the bottom of the Vossketen defined the main shape of the craft: they took up all of the space within the vehicle's interior. The Vossketen was basically an engine with a pilot. The Vossketen would have always needed an escort during operations as it mounted no weaponry and possessed no fighting capability other than ramming its opponents.

Truman's NSDF (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Harry_S_Truman)
Story
Give 'em Hell, Harry Fights Back
As Allied forces rolled into Berlin, the remaining Nazi officials in charge of the space program scrambled to destroy all records of their work. And indeed they did a fantastic job, hurling mountains of documents into the flames of the burning city before Himmler's SS finished the job by eliminating the officials themselves.

It was pure dumb luck that an American foot soldier, checking for survivors in an abandoned Nazi communications bunker, found underfoot a curious memo from one General Kranken. His name and battalion were unknown to American codebreakers, but his security clearance checked out and the memo survived even the closest scrutiny to prove authentic.

The memo detailed Kranken's plans for one final nazi Blitzkrieg of unimagined proportions. The lunar forces would land in the hostile environment of the Arctic region, beyond the reaches of any earthbound military. From there they would pour out into every continent, first eliminating the unsuspecting armies of the United States and Russia, then later seizing control of the weaker enemy nations.

Though it read like the wild fantasies of a children's' adventure serial, President Truman knew he had no choice but to take the memo seriously. Watching the skies and preparing for an invasion became the top priority of military scientists and engineers.

The following sketches were developed at this time by the U.S. government, under the supervision of Dr. Wilhelm Arkin; one of the few surviving engineers from the Nazi space program and a member of Jonathan Beardsley's original research station in the 1930's. With Beardsley uninvolved in the military aspects of the program, Arkin's knowledge was an invaluable, though certainly undesirable, necessity.

The Concept Drawings
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Truman_badger.jpg)
Badger Prototype
With only a brief run in combat use, the original Badger design was an ambitious failure. Its gun mount delivered a powerful punch that could pierce even the thickest armor with a quick spray of bullets, but its insufficient ground attachments often left it toppled on the ground before it could do any real damage. This embarrassing oversight was later remedied with the STAB hooks of later models.

Early Recycler
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Truman_recycler.jpg)
The result of countless setbacks and revisions, the earliest NSDF Recycler didn't appear on the battlefield until late in the German conflict. And even then, its astonishing feats of engineering took years to perfect. In fact, it took an even longer period of fast, consistent service to erase the Recycler's stigma of being an unreliable and potentially dangerous device.

Razor Prototype
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Truman_razor.jpg)
At first glance, the Razor prototype looks like a crude hybrid of a jet fighter and hovercraft. But closer inspection shows that "crude" is far too weak a word. Rushing to meet a deadline, NSDF technicians literally sawed the front end off a grounded P-47 and mounted it onto their engine base. The gamble paid off. The bird flew and it put them on track, with later improvements resulting in the Razor scout used during the CCA conflict.

Bobcat
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Truman_bobcat.jpg)
Having proven itself during World War II, the U.S. knew that a strong and versatile tank would be crucial to fighting on other worlds. This early design later became the Bobcat. It was all it was intended to be and more, outperforming anything in the German arsenal. The unit was so effective, in fact, that it remained in use during the CCA conflict of the late 60's and 70's - more than twenty years after it first rolled off the assembly line.

This vehicle later evolved into the Grizzly tank.

Pilot EVA Suit
(http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:FilePath&file=Truman_pilot.jpg)
If war were to be taken to the stars, one of the greatest challenges would be to keep soldiers alive in the harsh environs of space. A suit had to be devised that would not only sustain life, but also protect soldiers under combat conditions. The result offered a minimum of flexibility and even less comfort, but it got the job done. Pilots could exit their vehicles freely and hold their own on a planet's surface.

Chinese Red Army (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=CRA)
Story
-
Also known as the Chinese Red Army, the CRA was the Chinese attempt to enter the space race against the Americans and without their larger neighbor, Russia, and the CCA finding out.

They secretly setup a base on Ganymede, but didn't stay hidden for long when a Black Dog squadron stumbled on to their base and a small war began between them.

They utilize cloaking technology and other advancements derived from the ancient Pegasus Device designs. The Pegasus Device was shown to, at the very least, be capable of transporting ground droops from the mid Sol system to deep within the Ort Cloud. The distance is ultimately unknown as the Ort Cloud makes star based location triangulation difficult.

The (First) Black Dogs (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Black_Dogs)
Story
-
The first Black Dogs were formed by the NSDF (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=NSDF) to be a special forces to counteract the larger roaming CCA (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=CCA) armada. Under the command of Lieutenant [[Burns]], they went to work cleaning out nests of CCA (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=CCA) and CRA (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=CRA) forces around the Solar System.

After the major battle against the CCA (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=CCA) forces on Io (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Io) and Europa (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Europa), the Black Dogs were given rear echelon duties with collecting scrap of Ganymede (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Ganymede) and the smaller moons of Jupiter (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Jupiter) and Saturn (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Saturn).

They came under attack by the Chinese Red Army (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=CRA) and held up under a fierce attack, crippled the Chinese Army, discovered a brand new relic and Star System, all within 2 months.

The Black Dogs succeeded to become legends, but in the last battles of the Furies (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Furies) on Achilles (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Achilles), they got slaughtered and many were killed.

Under experiments created by General Armond Braddock (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Armond_Braddock), the Black Dog survivors were experimented on and finally a race of super humans were produced. Lieutenant Burns (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Burns) did not agree or like the idea of his people being used as weapons and so he and his men fled from Braddock using their new technology that the biometal seemed to give them. The re-named themselves the Scion Collective (http://www.bzcomplex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Scion_Collective).

the cerberi dont have pilots as such.

when Corber cracked open a Cerberi hull during the FE campaign (if you read through all the debriefings and full breifing s its hidden somewhere, the inside was like a humans central nervous system had been separated form its body and fused into the hull of the craft.

Thats odd. I'm gonna list some ideas for races according to each planet of our solar system.

I'm using humanoids because their the best for pilots

Mercury - Hot, probably creatures based on salamanders but humanoid.

Venus - Even hotter probably small, dense humanoids

Earth - Covered

Mars - Creatures Human like mostly because mars is not much different temperature wise than Earth

Jupiter - Humanoids except with the ability of flight in the heavy gravity and gases

Saturn - Probably the same as Jupiter maybe part of an empire

Uranus - Oceanic swimming creatures although human like

Neptune - Furry creatures that live underground most of the time for the warmth

Pluto - Covered

I meant it had humans and scions

What would exist in Jupiter would be more akin to eels of fish. The gasses are so dense they are practically liquids if not that. Do not forget the large number of moons of the gas giants either.

Pluto had a secret ISDF base where the Scions were created.

I want to see :(

Mercury - No life, this planet is visited in FE.

Venus - No life, may have been cythonian colonisation.

Earth - Covered

Mars - No life now, used to be colonised by Cythonians pre-BZ1.

Jupiter - Would be very difficult for humans to visit since the gravity is so strong, so we will never know.

Saturn - As Jupiter.

Uranus - Could have life, would be interesting to find out.

Neptune - No documented visits, life could be possible

Pluto - No life.

And just to throw it out there for people to use, I believe there is a moon of one of the planets in our solar system that has been found to have single celled organisms on it, can't remember which.

Eris, Ceres, there are tons of planetoids and asteroids in our solar system. The largest of all asteroids, Ceres, it actually shaped like a planet, and one of the reasons Pluto is now a planetoid (it is so much like Ceres in the qualification).

You don't have to go far to find a planetoid that's very odd...

Start looking for "moon mysteries" online, you'll find all kinds of odd things.  Gasses, dust storms without an atmosphere, and the moon 'rings' like it's hollow...

Maybe the Germans didn't all die off...   :)

And humans haven't evolved from them yet?  Very strange...

Yet for some reason in the campaign it has water(or a liquid that looks like it) on the surface, I never worked that one out...

And just to throw it out there for people to use, I believe there is a moon of one of the planets in our solar system that has been found to have single celled organisms on it, can't remember which.

Something very complicated and distant. If you look at them, they clearly are not humanoid as they seem but instead only vaguely human like. Their suit is so strangely shaped it could be 99% armor for all we know.

It's your pic...  very depressing.

Part of the reason some of the more 'creative' races aren't done, and I'm talking things like intelligent whales, trees, or gaseous life forms, is that races like that wouldn't really mingle with humans much.   Sure you might land on a planet with millions of gaseous creatures and, without very cool equipment, never know it.  Whales might evolve and eventually develop space travel but can you imagine the ships?   And unless the landing party (humans) went swimming I doubt they'd run into a whale landing party anytime soon.

I imagine it'd be a lot like Enterprise, where a coalition of different races would band together and we'd run into the ones most like us at first.  You wouldn't meet the Aquatics until introduced to them by the giant insects, or furry monkey-people, or reptile people.  :)

The game Sword of the Stars has a whale-like race, ships are liquid filled, very smart, very peaceful, very powerful.

I dont think humans would notice an intelligent tree race very much unless the trees moved first. And what would happen if there was an unintelligent but dangerous race of animals that would have to be fought against. Not like the jak-killer or scrap beast or anything but an actual "race" in battlezone. Probably unplayable because humans are intelligent and players are humans (Probably, lol) therefore it wouldn't make sense for them to play an unintelligent race. ?

I was looking into alternate control systems. I was thinking about an insect race that had you control units though a series of general orders. A devoted off map factory would build the command trigger objects and the DLL would interpret. All units near you would follow those orders. A more complex control system (BZ2 standard) would be activateable for a short time for those around you in the later tech tree levels in this design.

I have some interesting ideas put down for DLL ideas, want to hear them?

no, the old pic was much better. And I think Avatar was joking.

I bet you just get smited a lot about an old topic of thread that still gets traffic. It will calm down.

I borrowed a bunch of ideas from other games, here are some of the original and borrowed ones:

Is it just me, or did we all learn most of our Solar System knowledge from BZ1?   I know I did...   8-)

Le'er if IIRC. Love that thrust system, would be very cool effect in battlezone.
