Title: For those in the industry
Post by: TheJamsh on June 06, 2009, 12:53:50 PM
With the last year spent at a sound engineering college and a full-time dev leader of a mod, the most fun parts are doing the sound and explosions, making cutscenes. The whole 'making things' part of game development is my favourite part.

I REALLY want to work with the unreal 3 engine, and im considering parting my mod over to the U3 engine if possible. Of course, that might not be possible because of copyrighting etc, but nevertheless, i do want to work in the industry as a designer or creator of something.

The way in which modern engines works absolutely fascinates me. just type unreal engine 3 editor or similar into youtube and see just how complex things are. Its such a shame BZ2 cant be ported into such an engine. (well it could, if someone had access to the engine and a lot of spare time.)

So, where the hell do i get the unreal 3 engine and how can i start modding with it? i remember UT 1999 came with an editor program (unreal engine 1), but i havent bought any of those games since.

Does UT2004 or the latest version come with an editor for the E3 engine, with all the same features?

I actually have the Unreal 2004 editor on 2 discs. It was a gift from a friend. Let me know if you can't find what you need and I'll make you a copy.

UT3 has heaps and heaps of mods available.

But why would you want to switch to another engine? BZ2s engine is completely awesome!! Especially after 1.3.

Oh yeh for sure, i love BZ2 engine!

Only problem is that modern companies probably wouldnt be impressed by a TC mod in a ten year old engine. All the mid-big companies seem to want you to be fluent in all the most modern engines.

GSH would know more, but i think im right on that. Serenesis will be impressive i think, but not enough to give me a good understanding of modern systems... maybe... dont know.

I've seen some other games using ODF file, though whether they worked in the same way orr not I don't know. You never know, with your knowledge of BZ2 you could bring about the rise of the ODF and make new games moddable again! :)

I own a copy of UT3, you can get it off steam or just about anywhere new for $20

IT comes with an editor.

Not sure of its power but heres a screenie of it

You can probably remake the units and pilots easy, you will need to script bz2s special features into it would be the hard part.

Plus, one reason bz2 is still probably going is, id bet most peoples computers whom run bz2 are probably really crappy and have no hope of running
UT3.

BZ2 isnt still going because everyone cant afford PCs that run the latest games. It's still going because people enjoy playing it.

And of course, modding it.

That is just insulting to so many things on so many levels. Take it back or suffer the consequences.

If you think that BZ2 (or BZ1) invented .odf files, think again. .odf files are nothing more than renamed .ini files, which I remember seeing back in the Windows 3 days. And, they're probably even older. Whether they're used or not doesn't make games moddable. Most modern games do have some sort of text file that describes various assets, but it's converted to some sort of binary file (e.g. like .xsi -> .msh or .bmp -> .dxtbz2) that the engine reads. This is because reading ascii is slow, every time. If you convert to binary once, then subsequent loads are much faster.

Supporting mods is more of a management decision. It costs time (and therefore salaries) to make tools usable by others.

....... think of the Wii.

Which is successful NOT because it is cheap but because of ignorant buyers and its 'all ages' garbage.

Battlezone is still played because there is nothing else like it. It is good, it is very good. I have MANY modern games much more complicated requiring much more power than BZ2, yet I still play mainly BZ2, and that is true for many others.
