I've heard a few people mention that they would very much enjoy a new community project for 1.3, and that they believe it could dwarf even FE. What do you guys think?
The plans were started for one about a year ago, but it never took off. Noone could agree on a story for one.
What seems most likely currently is a mod starts with a small team and grows to encompass many community members.
Heres the name, its offical, dont debate it.

Try this one:

Tried long ago. I'm the one who sparked the idea and we got as far as getting a team together and cmptrwz creating a thread for it....from that point on it died.....hard and horrible.

Lots of storyline brainstorming going on in "Story Idea Outline Revision D"
Maybe sum1 should be picked to lead it and make final decisions to avoid arguments.

OK Okmid-I'm-a-nutjob.
Ug, I have a MASSIVE storyline but I am keeping all but the most mundane bits secret...
You talking about the aRc story?
I have a MUCH better idea...
Lets wait for 1.3 development to be finalised. Yeh that may be a while, but its probably one of the best ideas. Duno about you but i get SO bored waiting for mods to be updated to the latest beta. Thats EXACTLY why EPIC isnt out yet. As soon as 1.3 is final, then Slaor is going to work on it again. Not only that but SO many people have designed storylines for post-FE, including myself.
I considered opening up Serenesis as a community project. But wasn't so sure people would go along with it... Thing is when you write something you really like and its all picture perfect in you're head, you dont like other people to mess with it too much.
1.3 will never be finalised.
Just work for the newest beta.
Ken and GSH can't work on it forever.

But yeah i doubt 1.3 will ever be finished, it will just be patch after patch.
What exactly is a community project? A mod put together by everyone here?
It's literally what it sounds like. A bunch of members of the community work together to make a mod. Obviously the people do what they're good at and submit assets to the dev leader for inclusion in the mod.
Precisely, Forgotten Enemies was a CP and a great one, lots of talent there. So will Remembered Allies be Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?

Basically, yes. Not 'everyone', but a 'lot' more people than with the other mods. Check out the credits on Forgotten Enemies. I played a minor role beta-testing the first few SP missions (commissioned by Lizard), but unfortunately my name wasn't listed.
I still think the next CP should be titled "Forgotten Enemas" (sorry, a joke I made several years back).
My next CP joke is better, humph.

From what I've read here, never.
There are numerous mods that might gain the status already in production but I do not see a new mod forming for this cause.
Everybody finishes their current mod, then everyone helps everyone else whom has not finished. Then once all thats done we work on RA. Maybe a year of all the great 1.3 modders working together could make some fantastic.
Well newest patches are supposed to make it easier for the modders. A lot of the fixes were done so peoples mod would work. So it shouldn't be a duanting task. Not near as hard as FE had to have been.
I for one would love a change of course. Like Red Orchestra was to UT2004. Totally nothing to do with the story line. Super villains that can conjure up hordes of mechanical minions vs U.S. Marines and their new super weapons created by scientists after discovering how to make a sentient transforming alloy.
Anything besides terrans versus aliens.
The BZ2 engine is very directed towards the game it was designed for though, you wouldnt be able to pull off a lot of things without .dll help.
I used to enjoy making up stories for bz2...
My favorite story was the ISAF (Interplanetary Space Attack Fleet)
I don't feel like writing it down as I don't have my original script next to me at the moment, but it would fit into 1.3 with all the newer assault unit types :p
how bout we see who is working on stuff already and get an estimate of when theyll be done. We'll also need some volunteer candidates to be dev. leader. After the volunteers make themselves known vote!
I'd love to be a part of it. I have a LOT of ideas (some I haven't even shared), and a great story I've already shown you guys. The ISDF needs an overhaul and I've got the ideas and concepts down already. I'd just need a modeler to finish the work for me. I've already done half of it.
Were still keeping my name though.
Most of the more ambitious mods (Serenesis/Perfidious/aRc) have just started recently, so they're not going to be done for a long time. The ones that are closest to completion right now are probably BZC and HE. It's going to be a while.
Ahem?
We can at least elect a dev leader
I'm going to tell you guys why I dissapeared for so long. The last time I was here, this same thing happened. A bunch of people wanted to start a new community mod, but no one with any talent joined and it turned out to be just a bunch of bickering children fighting for control when nothing was ever going to get done in the first place. >.> I felt sick and just left, cause I really wanted to accomplish something. I was really let down by the whole thing and just left. Lets please not go down that road again. If you have nothing real to contribute, then to be honest, I think your vote shouldn't count. Only people who will participate and actually accomplish something and help with the mod. I hate to sound course, but after last time... can you really blame me?
If a group of people wouldn't mind helping me out we might get a ton of nice mods out there. I have as many as 10 things started. I always wanted my Factions idea to be a community type mod, but I found only myself designing all the races/factions for it.
I think BZRAP should be a CP XD.

It technically will be if you think about it.
A 1.3 CP might be a nice thing to get me modding again. I've lost interest in it for the time being due to running out of ideas and i haven't heard anything from Steeveeo in AGES regarding the SRV campaign.
Just a name to throw into the suggestions on here: Gaiadammerung. Apocalypse, trying to find a new earth, possibly settling on Mire, etc. Finding new race, all that good stuff.
Well, I am glad to see story line ideas going around that I already have written into something.
Anyone want to help out with Factions?
Poor Canada is all by it's loansome with one tank and a special device.

Stuff Canada, we've got a CP! :P
I would say we should have one of our super-modders as a dev. leader... Overmind, Avatar, NK1... I would say Fishbone but he doesn't come by any more. Not that any of these guys will have the time, of course.
Like I said, I have a list of ideas and concept designs. PLENTY of stuff, believe me. I just need an outlet for my creativity.
Just keep in mind I'm not a modeler, I'm a concept artist and thats as far as it goes. I can also help with voice acting, stock photography, nature textures, metal textures, etc. I have a Sony 8.1 camera with macro.
Someone mentioned the story I posted would be great for this project. Any thoughts to it being used? I think its a great story. It introduces an enemy that you'll WANT to fight, has lots action, factions within the earth forces, and a newly reinvented ISDF.
Here's a link to it http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9478.0.html (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,9478.0.html), but keep in mind that's a rough draft and it has to be reworked to work for BZ2.
You know what, I'll get started on it right now. But first I have to ask, what year do all the stories end with the EDF? What year is it safe for a new story to start?
Any year and time. BZ2 has two alternate endings, as such mods do not need to rely on anything for their bases. A mod can entirely be, what if all of BZ2 happened and the Scion ending, but then the Scions never got nuked? The ISDF was never replaced with the EDF, things didn't change, the Scions were still on Dark Core/New Core/Dark Planet.
What? ... then who is the EDF? :? Can someone explain this to me please?
Also, I need a name for the race of insane war criminals. I can't think of anything really... except the Roncar, but I think I got that from Bleach. >.> It sounds menacing, I think thats why I like it. Anyone else have any suggestions?
Roncar... I think I like it... but I'm open to suggestions.
Why make an entire race of people/creatures that are only war criminals? It would make much more sense for them to just be a big, wealthy faction.

Two major pirate organisations in Serenesis are called the 'Feint' (being Thomas Feints organisation) and 'Meth'. the name Meth is subject to change seeing as i didnt think about the drug...
The Feint are mostly made up of ex-criminals who managed to get themselves a place aboard an AAN Colony Class Seeding Ship when the colonisation acts began. This involved killing civilians at first, but as time went on it began easier to get aboard. Once the drug 'Thermoakryliate' was brought into the system via trade with the Hadeans by accident, people could use it to counteract the deep-sleep drugs used on board the AAN Ships. All the pirates had to do was take the drug and they re-awaken during the flight, giving them the ability to Mutiny and take over the ships.
Once time goes on, Feint's organisation gets so large they start using their stolen AAN property (The Hundreds of Trillions of Gelden worth) to mount raids on other AAN seeding ships. Civilians and soldiers alike on board are forced to either work for Feint or suffer death.
Once The Black Cerberi Raids start taking place on the most distant colonies that the AAN has the least ability to police and protect, Feint starts using his stolen equipment to fuel a new type of 'Black Market'. Illegally giving the colonies the ability to defend themselves by providing supplies and armnents. Of course, Feint rarely does a good job, but you wouldn't argue with him about it.

I've already got the idea of how i want them too look. If you're interested :D?
Can someone please explain to me how the EDF came to pass and what happened to the ISDF?
Why not just stick with a faction? Because I want to create an enemy that I want to fight. An enemy that's evil, routhless, insane, and has no reguard for life. An enemy that makes the ISDF stronger and makes you want to kill it and get revenge. An enemy that deserves death... instead of a bunch of innocent soldiers standing up for what they believe in.
In my story I want the ISDF and EDF on the borderline of war, so there ARE factions in my story, but thats only a small part of the story to give it more depth.
To be honest, I want to create a race of beings no one's ever heard of before who are completely insane and unpredictable. What you describe requires the mind of a sane congitive enemy who can plan and rationalize. Thats completely opposite to the road I was going down.
The enemy I was describing earlier in the story thread I started is insane, suicidal, irrational, and completely unpredictable. They don't use stratagies, they just kill kill kill. Thats all they do.
I wanted them to be twice the size of humans with a large boney jaw, pointy teeth, hunched over with claws, black cold eyes, and carrying large weapons when they eject.

ISDF and Scions combined to form Earth Defence Force
No they didn't... Braddock's nuclear facility obliterated core, flung it out of orbit, destroyed all its systems (ejected the Cerberus Computer into space, spewing Cerberi all the way - disputed) and generally caused hell for the Scions, and killed Manson while it was at it, the Scions damn near declared war on the ISDF who, in shame and seeking to shed all connection with Armond Braddock, changed their name to the EDF. Same force, same units, new name.
That's what I'm getting from the FE breifings and things anyway.
Scions are hostile to the EDF throughout the FE storyline, only giving help to the members of Operation Guard Dog in fear of their own destruction.
According to what i read the cerberi and the other supercomputer where ejected.
I always thought the EDF involved more nations than the ISDF.
The Rise of the EDF merged the AAN and the UN and made the former ISDF the generalized army of Earth itself rather than a joint NSDF/CCA army off in space hunting for more biometal.
If you read the wiki it says the edf was used for dirty little jobs no one wanted to do.
And exactly which wiki says that?
BZ2wiki theres a link to it...somewhere. battlezone complex place
Does anyone really read the materials we have or do they just skim them and spout random crap?
The following is the pseudo canon. Mods do not need to follow it, but it is what occurred in mods the community as a whole considers the continuation of the story.
- The new Black Dogs do the jobs no one wants to do.
- The Cerberus AI was NOT ejected from Core, the Scion Super Computer which was brought over from the older, dying Core planet was.
- The Cerberi viewed humanity as the enemy because Braddock nuked the hell out of their home.
- The Cerberi were on the Dark Planet before it was turned into Dark/New Core.
- The EDF does not even use Biometal ships. The Ships you used in FE are actually old ISDF ships stored away since before the AAN dismantled the ISDF after the Core Disaster.
- The EDF is what happens when bureaucrats weight public opinion over defense. A "paper tiger".
- The ISDF and Scion endings do not BOTH OCCUR, it is one or the other.
- There are TWO known core planets at the end of the Scion story in stock BZ2, none at the end of the ISDF.
OH, so sorry we pissed off the Wiki guy.

It is not a theory, it is blatant cold hard fact (in fiction).
The Core planet stabilizes biometal so the Scions need it, but it is dying. So they use the Alchimators on 3 planets in the same system as core to terraform the Biometaloid Dark Planet in our solar system into a new Core. Thus, 2 Cores...
The FE story even says they go back to the old dying Core in the Mire System.
I have a story I have put together that explains the existence of the Core Planet, and amazing in prodding Avatar found many of my thoughts were the same as his. I have this story as part of a understory to something else.

I'll give everyone wanting to make a Mod a tip... when you want to expand a story you first need to fully understand the story. This means looking not only at what the story
says, but what it
doesn't say as well.
Here's the example using what Nielk1 is talking about...
Both storylines in BZ2 revolve around three cool power crystals that power three HUGE machines, on three different planets, apparently created by three different races (given the different building styles) an untold number of years ago (but probably a very long time ago).
When activated these machines shoot out beams that, once they get through a wormhole, turn a frozen planet light years away into a fresh new duplicate of an almost used up planet that's right next door to the three planets with the HUGE machines that use the three cool power crystals.
Now...
If this DOESN'T make you ask WTF??? you haven't been paying attention.
WHO would make even ONE of these machines? For WHAT? Why would three different races want to Xerox a planet that's right next door? How did they even know the Dark Planet existed? What would they do with it once they copied it?
I mean, the whole backstory is just begging to be told... which is what I think Nielk is getting at, but this sort of thing works for any story. Everything has a beginning, and figuring out how we got where we are is often a lot of fun...
-Av-
Too bad everyone is worried about the FUTURE.
"Who controls the past controls the future."
History repeats itself, you find the reasons for things past, you can prevent/envoke similar events. That in iteself is a good mod basis. :P
When the Chinese use those portals, do they go backwards and/or forwards in time or not?
Perhaps the 1.3 community project should be a story of the history of those three planets, and the cthonians that lived there.
Um... its not even a logical assumption that the people of Icarus(Cthonia) even inhabited them.
BZ2 only mentions that Cthonian characters can be found on the Mire Ruins. We assume they are from the Scions.
But it is later found Braddock made the Scions well before those ruins existed. And IIRC the symbols were Cthonian like, but required a large but of work before they could be translated, so are they just based on the Cthonian language?
My story is of the distant events of the past that explains the existence of the Core planet itself, but the actual mod takes place shortly after FE normally would have, only after the events of the ISDF ending of BZ2. Confusing?
What is a safe year to start a new story after everything thats happened so far with the EDF?? I keep asking this and no one has answered it yet and I really need to know it. Its the last thing I need to know before posting my rough draft.
Well, I told you to look at the FE story line and then see if FE had a storyline.
And remember, you mod can branch off from the mod/game story line anytime you want.
And as a note, my wiki is really a CMS rather than a Wiki. It does not go though source evaluation like a real wiki.
I don't know when that story ends. Thats the problem. I don't know the dates. Thats why I'm asking. I want to know when the last story involving the EDF ends. What year?
If you want to know when the last EDF story ends, we would be modding past FS3, possibly just before mods like Serenesis that are set in a hundred years or so. It would be safer to work in the 20-year-or-so gap between FE and FS.That being mid-late '00s to early-mid '20s.
So I can start at say... 2030? And things can really take off in 2040's?
Just in case something conflicts, keep in mind in this story, the ISDF reforms, take over again, and the EDF are reduced to AAN guard duty.
Another thing? Where's the best place to post this story? I'm hoping it sparks a new community mod that takes place in the FE storyline.
Well, 2050 and beyond actually gives enough leg room to not only make you mod about further events but you can add some backstory for the 10-20 years between it and the last FleshStorm Mod(Presumably FS3).
OR you can go with the alternate universe idea. I personally plan to do a "What if biometal never hit Earth" scenario.
This basically implies that Cthonia (otherwise known as Icarus) was never destroyed as an effort to kill the Furies and that either the Ancient Olympians and Hadean still exist or that the Furies had won and have yet to strike Earth. This also means that Earth will eventually be thrown into the Biometal legacy but the means will be different.
This type of Alt.Universe leaves room for new resources to rise and thus new technology.
okay, then the backstory will start in 2042 and the action will start in the 2050's. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Really, I needed this information really badly!
are you writing a story for 1.3 community project?
Hoohah's story seems best for for shortly after FE before the EDF gains any power back after saving the Earth. Remember, you can split off the time line and make your own.
I hate to be negative... but I've always had a thing against alternate time lines. I'd rather be part of the main story. :( So thats why I'm trying so hard to work it in somehow. I was thinking that the ISDF could remain mostly out of earth's solar system at the end of my story, and go off adventuring in space, keeping earth's enemies at bay. Fighting anyone who wants to start anything with earth, and rip them a new one. :D

Well, you have a small problem there. BZ2 has 2 alternate timelines spanning from it's own two endings.
I always assumed that the scion one was the one everyone used because its the one your supposed to have. but anyway hoohah is this going to be a story for the 1.3 community project?
I think Hoohah plans to follow FE, which seems logical to me.
If you want to broadcast your story as the 1.3 BZ2CP storyline, which I'm sure everybody will agree with, make a thread about it, broadcasting it as the Official 1.3 BZ2CP Storyline or something. Maybe an admin could create a Subforum under the TA5 board.
Posted it as a submission. Go read it. Its in this area of the forum.
Okay, lets stop screwing around and put it to a vote. Who here can contribute something and wants to help with a new community project?
*raises hand* I do!
I can write, proof read, and edit (I almost majored in English), 3D concept designs, textures, mapping (painting, terrain, the artistic stuff, etc), weapon research, testing, vehicle tweaking, odf weapons creation and testing.
I would love to but I'm just plain too busy.
On my list:
Dev Lead:
Mutator Recycler Variant Pack
Nielk1's Recycler Variant
aRc Mod - Apostles/Exodus (Yes that is 2 mods planned)
Factions
Reactor Wars (Game Mode)
King and Queen (Game Mode)
Contributor and/or tester:
Steeveeo's Recycler Variant
TheJamsh's Recycler Variant
Hidden Enemies
Cerberi Revenge (I think there is still work to be done)
BZTron
Serenesis
ZE Mod 1.3
Not to take thunder away from your plans, but personally I would love to see Factions turned into a community project. It has a very loose story line, no SP missions planned or otherwise, tons of races/factions that are barely started and few have definite plans.
It seems community mods are unlikely to ever occur again here. The community has too few members and too many talented members. As a result what is most likely is for a large number of mod groups to spring up and make individual mods. For example, EPIC, BZClassic (BZ1's NSDF and CCA, TRO's BDOGs and CRA, BZn64:ROTBD BDOGs, Ancients: both sides, Extended:BZ1-BZ2), FleshStorm 2, and Serenesis.
An attempt was made at a Community DM mod. Literally just a DM mod. It failed. Horribly.
I most certainly can, though I may at times need to trail off to work on Perfidious for a while. I need to split my time since I have three projects if I work on this too, PF and the TA5 e-Pack being the others.
I can provide the following skills:
- Texture editing
Jamsh says my files seem to be smaller than everybody else's, must be my method
- Sound engineering
Got me a copy of GoldWave, I'm good to record and edit voiceovers and source sound effects
- Mapping
Only done a few, but the map editor is pretty easy
- Storywriting and in-game text writing
Scored an A* in Creative Writing Coursework at GCSE, full marks. Should be able to take some of the load off Hoohah.
Probably modelling too when I get Wings3D, but I'll leave you guys to that for now.

That seems to be at a loss of quality, though it seems to be more something I notice then anyone else oddly. As such there is no issue.
I'd like to put forward the aRc mod series for consideration as a community project. We've (Nielk1 and I) worked on the story for about a year and a half now so I'm reasonably sure we've got it down pat. For background, PM me, since I'd rather not post it on a public forum.

Yeah, go for it, though if we have more than one storyline we'll need to vote on it. Speaking of which, I'd quite like to hear (I've got the basics down though)
Ooooh yeah, I forgot I can edit sounds and voice act. I was told by a radio person that I have a great voice and should definately be an announcer. :D I've done voice acting for games before, so I'd love to be a unit!
Think about maybe somehow intertwining incomplete mods by one or few people into a large commmunity project (alternate ending or more technology/races).
There is a point to that. I don't know whats going on. I'm not familier with whats going on or who exactly is working on what. But I'd like to ask if everyone is splitting off in their own direction working on too many different projects? If you guys are doing that... nothing gets done that way.
Or maybe people should submit ideas for mods, or an incomplete mod, and they all would be put up for vote.
BTW, I can do a little modeling (not very good at getting them in the game though). I've never done voice acting but I think i can do it. I can write and edit too. Not map making or dll scripting though.
Anybody who makes a voice recording, send it to me as an unedited file, I'll edit it myself. Or use my editing tutorial, it makes for the most realistic effect possible. If you're playing ISDF.
thankfully I can edit my own and make it sound good. :) But you would have to make it ready for BZ2
Can we set up threads for voting on mods for the community project, as well as voting for the name of the hero?
Quote from: Clavin12 on June 24, 2009, 06:14:55 PM
...as well as voting for the name of the hero?
The name of the hero is dictated by the mod that is chosen, not by the community. If the hero's name is not decided at the time of selection, then the community can offer suggestions, but in the end it's up to the Dev-team's discretion.
I see. But shall the thread be put up?
Thats a bad idea. We still don't know if we're making a mod. Don't rush into it. Thats what happened last time, and thats why a lot of people fought and bickered. No body knew what was going on or if anyone was going to work on it, but people who couldn't really contribute anything started a whole new area of the forum on it. Because of that, it was completely unorganized, no one could agree on anything, and it blew up in our faces. Lets take a lesson from that and not do that again. So please settle down and let us figure out if this is even going to happen. So far, it doesn't look like it is unless more people commit to getting involved.
Another problem that happened in that event was everyone had their own idea and everyone got ignored. No one could agree on anything, and everyone and their grandmother wanted it to be something different.
So first we need to know if anyone else is available for this mod. We still need some people with modeling experience, mappers, a coder, and a dev leader.
Personally I'm sort of a jack of all trades master of none. While I can't do anything particular on my own, I can however pick up slack and help one area out that needs it the most. Mapping, modeling, textures, sound, voice, vehicle odf writing/tweaking, weapon writing/tweaking/, etc. I've had experience doing all those in BZ2.
I'm officially a jack of all trades now that I have made some DM maps.
Well lets at least make a thread explaining the idea and avaliable for answering questions. Once everyone understands what it is and how to go about it we can start. Right?
I wouldn't advise any more CP threads until we know for certain that something is happening.
well then lets have a thread to vote on weather or not to do it. Simply yes or no.
Maybe...
A count of people who would be interested in helping and how they could help would be a good place to start, just to see who would be available.
Well then sum1 should start the thread
Could I help?
When it comes to actually programming I'll be completely useless, but in my head I have some really cool designs for vehicles that I've always wished could get into the game and was hoping someone would like to have a go at.
I could also help by writing some of the storyline.
I just worked really hard on a story line. I hope it gets used.... I really really hope it does. Frankly I'd like to see a new mod that concentrates on the adventures of the ISDF, instead of another new race or those lame EDF. The idea of being in a paper tiger military force really turns me off from playing as the EDF.
There's still a lot of room for ideas, and I welcome them if anyone wants to contribute to my story... as long as it doesn't conflict with the theme of the story or doesn't really obviously fit. I'm looking for some added action. Maybe a secondary objective that spices things up. There's lots of things that can go wrong in space. :D
I liked the mission in bz2 when you have to walk to mansons base on mire. in the bz2 storyline you kind of feel for shabayev. That would be a good addition for a new storyline.
Dang i keep losing karma...I don't know what i'm doing to make people hate me.
GenHoo's story best fits right after FE, with the EDF starting to get some power, but this power still under consideration after they save the Earth, and a smaller group than the whole AAN wanting control.
You read it! So you like it then? :D
I Vote "Battlezone 2 1.3 Community Project: Goblins!"
The idea to get the project rolling again is not without merit as many of us have gained some modding knowledge over the past year or so, but how long did FE take to go from concept to completion? How did everyone involved coordinate with one another? I have a feeling that a lot of us would love to participate if the project ever gets rolling again. I'm not much of a coordinator, but would like to help make stuff for the mod; just need some feedback on what to begin modeling. BNG.
I thought the project was rolling.
Shouldn't this thread be locked because there is a whole board dedicated to the project now?
maybe it wasn't locked because everybody thought no one would post in it anymore.
Maybe we should call the community project "The Battlezone II 1.3 Community Project: Goblins!"
I like that.
From here, (hiding in the dark place's) It looks like Mod development by committee...Stop arguing over stories and names and go and make some models, then argue about them until you get a racial style developed, then go back and make the models again...
