Title: Is there any good reason to keep 1.2 installed on my system?
Post by: BNG Da BZ Fool on July 02, 2009, 07:02:31 PM
Probably, the only one I could possibly think of is for Forgotten Enemies, but now that FE has/is being adapted for 1.3 can I safely delete my 1.2 install completely and just use 1.3 and above? I see no legitimate reason tp keep it and just uninstall 1.2 completely. Besides with all of my assets the folder size weight in at just under 3 gigs of drive space. The extra size is due to FE, Data, and ZTV assets.

Can I safely just move these assets along with BNG assets to my 1.3 install and just uninstall 1.2 completely? I'm still debating the matter, but everything points to why are you still even using 1.2???

Well you've got ZTV, and SF (If you play that).

Those would be the only reasons for me to keep 1.2.

The SF reason will become obsolete before long, unless you like Rotons.

So ZTV, COW, Starfleet, and other 1.2 based mods won't run under 1.3? I can understand this with FE as it has it's own executable, but why wouldn't other 1.2 mods run under 1.3???

ZTV won't because it utilizes 1.2 glitches/bugs to work properly (like Scrap Breeders).
Other mods don't because people haven't updated them yet.

Also, FE DOES work under 1.3, just the conversion process is a WIP.

The EXE does what MM5 does, in fact they share code.

SF and ZTV will both work with 1.3 before long, and I'm sure somebody will update COW some time, though I've never been able to play it.

SF works fine under 1.3

Starfleet will be in the TA5 addon pack as a recycler variant. So you needn't worry about that mod.

Red Devil is making FE for TA5, ZTV isnt a major loss and COW? meh.

I have 6 installs of BZ2 on my desktop, and 4 on my laptop. so long as you have the HDD space it doesnt really matter.

And WHO green lighted that one?

Leave a 1.2 install somewhere.  You can copy the contents to a new folder and then install new patches to it.  Makes life much simpler.

ZTV no great loss?  It's one of the finest mods ever made.  I haven't seen anything to match Death Ray, Water World, or Saucer yet.  And Icarus is just plain brilliant.

Tempest Storm did. Sonic directed me his way after asking him, and TS said that Boj-Man had been inactive for a number of years. TS said it twas fine, so long as Boj-Man gets the proper credit. Which of course he will.

EDIT: Should have kept my mouth shut about ZTV. I never REALLY played it very long, just a quick couple of games here and there. Now i want to try it out...

OK, good.

ZTV is epic. I am sad to say I have been unable to make a breeder in 1.3. I notified GSH of this issue so he COULD MAYBE IF WE PRAY supply a fix to it at some point if things move.

There are some good 1.2 mods that are not even often played anymore. The 1.2 G66 is different from the 1.3 one, and there are a few older mods too.

1.3 had loads of mods, many of which will never be seen again. Not that many of them will be mourned...

I especially liked The Journey, though I have never got past those flying scouts at the beginning

I keep 1.2 installed because of G66, Skywars and Starfleet.

Quite a bit of mods and maps seem to have been made for 1.2; I didn't know about G66 though. Something inside says to keep 1.2, but part says stop trying to mod for it. Then I just get confused about making stuff under 1.2 and how to make the move to making stuff servicable for 1.3 and above. I know the change logs are key to understanding this stuff, but like most peeps I scavenge through all of the different mods and maps to make my own stuff, so I guess I'll just have to get use to mixed results. ZTV, is a exceptional mod by any measure.

I work in much the same way, I have never read the changelogs (though I know damn well I should) and I just work things based on other people's work (without copying it). It is easy enough to do with TA5, you may just need to adjust a little.

There are so many new things you can do.

I might give it a try... hold on, I thought the TA5 one was still being written?

It gives enough of a base that you can use it until the TA5 one is released.

I still keep an install of 1.2, and also of everything between PB3 and TA5. Waiting on my BZ2 disk to get TA5.1...

I think that would actually take longer than going and fetching the disk from my friend, given the huge amount of mods on 1.2
