Title: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: Raven on July 22, 2009, 11:59:25 AM
Well, as the title suggests, I got bored and thought I'd try to remake that model I made aaages ago (The Renzuken, I called it) that was going to be a space battleship for the mod.
As I said before, its heavily based off of the Nadesico (anime) since its such an epic looking ship and its the 1st anime I ever actually watched so its kinda always stuck in my head. Well, I have the bridge, arms and engines done, and before I try to tackle the pretty damn complicated main body, I was wondering if what I have is actually any good before I carry on...

The vertex colours are just to make a contrast so the images do more justice. UV mapping is gonna be a bleeder, but I actually have the arms UV mapped already, which is surprising, as for those who remember, I freakin' hate UV mapping, drawing the texture is gonna suck but you never know I might get it right.

Anywhoo, what d'ya think?

Sorry about the black backing, Flickr has insisted on converting the transparent PNG to a jpg.... And I can't be botehred to re-render them with a white background :P

I haven't gone too insane with the poly count, it could look a hell of a lot smoother and could have air vents and all sorts of details, but I automatically made it so that bz2 *might* just handle it...

You can upload to BZComplex's gallery if you can get it to work (some have issues). There is a generic modifications section or you can create a user gallery.

I like it, keep going. We need good modelers. What will happen to it when it is done?

One thing I always found odd about SCIFI is the bridge is always so obvious. Only has Battlestar Galactica (the new one) had a 'Command and Control' in the center heart of the ship rather than right on top or in front screaming SHOOT ME. That being said, still everyone makes bridges :-P

Again, I like your model, keep going.

Frigging great looking so far, no idea what the source is though, so I can't give an accuracy rating.
Title: Re: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: Raven on July 22, 2009, 12:42:38 PM
I honestly don't know what will be done with it if its ever completely textured etc. All the ideas I had where going to be for the mod, so *shrugs.* Its just eyecandy I guess.
Bridges are awesome, can you imagine standing at the viewscreen/window and looking over that xD
I'll take a look at that gallery, thanks.

Theres no way I could accurately model the Nadesico, its just based off of it.
Though I've actually modelled it more off of the Nadesico B:

I wasn't really aiming for accuracy, I just wanted it to look a bit like it. Actually, looking at that image, the arms need to be longer >_<

Tis cool. Heck id bet that would work on its own. One of those crafts where the parts are not connected or something.

What program did ya use?

looks like WINGS!!!

That looks cool as. i love it.

Looks very nice.

Tricount?
Title: Re: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: Raven on July 22, 2009, 07:23:17 PM
All models by me are usually made in Wings, I just get on with it.

After doing a bit more work with nicer curves and fine-tunes, the tri count, still without the main body, is currently 2549, which is too much for bz2, but I half expected that anyway. Having said that, with the upgraded graphics engine, can it handle more now? Or does that not make a difference (I'm not a programmer)?

I think it'd look a bit strange having 5 separate parts floating about!
Title: Re: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: VSMIT on July 22, 2009, 07:40:26 PM
As of now, the tri count limit is 2730 2/3.  This has always been the limit the engine gives.

However, GSH has said that TA5.1 will allow for higher counts.  So I'd say finish the ship, and we'll see where we're at afterward.
Title: Re: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: Raven on July 22, 2009, 07:42:36 PM
Well I wasn't planning on having it in bz2 anyway. Not to mention, the size is immense. Like, at least half of Dunes, its a freakin' space battleship with living quarters and everything! Cmoooon!

We could use it in a mission in the CP?  Or in the cinematics.

If its finished and you want it in a cinematic, sure, fine by me, same with if its usable in the CP in any other way.

put some hp Emits between them, and use a 'binding' effect, like an electical beam or something? Like the pod racers on starwars :P

I love it, although as a starship i picture it without the racing car spoiler...

Very nice model Raven.

2 thumbs up!

And I know what you mean about UV mapping... although thankfully I have finally gotten my head around it.

Title: Re: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: Raven on July 22, 2009, 10:51:14 PM
Thanks for the comments folks.

I've also got my head around UV mapping but I'm crap at drawing the textures :P Wings actually does it itself now, only issue is I don't think you can import your own image, either you can't, or I'm on the wrong screen :P At least its *fairly* easy to actually map it in the 1st place, gmax is a huge pain in the ass.

No, no no no, nice idea, but its having a body :P End of xD
And it isn't a spoiler! Its... a... erm... observation deck? Lol. Well its on that 2nd images and it looks decent, I'm actually pretty happy with how the bridge structure turned out, not so sure on the engines though but we'll see.
Oh, it has even more polys now, since it has air intake ducts and exhausts *ahem* sorry.

I like it. Continue. If you scaled it down to a hovering ship it could be like a mobile recycler or sumthing

Looks cool, but I can't see/don't understand the functionality of the extended arms.  It's like it's in a mid-transformational state.  If I blow one of those arms off with a blast, you're hosed.
Title: Re: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: Raven on July 23, 2009, 11:41:45 AM
Its just aesthetic, and since its such a huge ship, your blast won't really do anything with it being the size of a small village, even if it could, you gotta get through the shield before you get to the hull.

A breif backstory:
In the anime, the arms probably hold some components or other, probably engineering stations or whatever. It has a shield that they call a 'distortion field' that literally bends energy beams coming towards it and can deflect projectiles too, but not as well, it takes one hell of a beating. The field and cannon are powered by the engines, which are called Phase Transition engines, and they only work on full power in a vacuum, where the cannon can be repeatedly fired. However, in an atmosphere, the cannon has to charge, the field isn't as strong etc.

The model in itself is pretty much finished now, it was actually quite a headache with torn edges due to my carelessness, I *think* I've sorted them all out, but the way its rendered with odd gradients here and there suggest that there are still a few tears. Infact I just noticed one nasty bit in the 2nd to last image, pre-rendered it looks fine but thats ballsed up... Fix it tomorrow maybe. Oh, and that goes for how the bridge connects to the strut, I will put in something much nicer looking than how it just seems to be sitting right on it.

I'm reasonably happy.... Some bits need fine-tuning though.

Oh, and at 4788 tris, it aint gonna be going into bz2  :-P

UV mapping + texturing it is gonna be a bitch...

Anyway its 2am, I'm going to sleep :-D

Damnit man you posted too fast, I just edited my post to say I'm gonna make that bit sexier.

And what don't you people get about shields?! Oh, and that it isn't gonna be in any freakin game its just to look at xD

EDIT:
But, just to humor you, that 'thin bit' is actually roughly the size of an ISDF dropship.

Anyway, SLEEP!

Post by: Raven on July 31, 2009, 02:19:49 PM
Yeah but since it was already well over the limit, the torus hardly mattered. But yes, they suck in all other circumstances.

And yes as nicely quoted by AHadley, this monster isn't gonna work in the bz2 engine. But as I said before, should it ever get textured and you want it, I am perfectly willing for it to go into a cinematic or whatever. Capturing it can be done in either another game engine (damn this would look nice in EvE Online) or if one of you has a funky program like Lightwave or whatever as I think that did animation sequences...

I love making FMVs but as noted everywhere over and over since the dawn of time, any semblance of quality requires a crazy huge file. Else you work really hard and end up rendering something about the size of 4 icons arranged 2x2 on a winXP desktop (IE all BZ2 .bik). Polycount has little to do with that, and for all I know it can be the prettiest thing around if your PC will let you (I've had my fair share of week long renders on old PCs...not fun) but do you really want something so big and beautiful that putting it in a cutscene/FMV and repackaging it for redistribution would kill it and all that hard work?
Title: Re: Got bored, made (half) a model, worth continuing?
Post by: TheJamsh on August 02, 2009, 10:45:54 AM
Dont forget that a well-made texture could account for any rise in poly counts. Units that make the best use of textures to hide polygon edges could be some of the stock scion units, or jak killers, or even better Lizards races, particularly the swarm.

BBB also did a good job in QF2, but the smegger deleted them so we'll never know ;(

If I was any good at animations or had a program that could do it, I would actually definitely do that. As well as make the arms come in and backwards a bit. But I don't and I am not. :P Well, I don't *think* I'm any good at it, since I've never like, tried.

EDIT:
I really want Lightwave since I didn't get on with 3dsmax... spAce's models looked orgasmic and as far as I remember it did animations that bz2 could use. Alternatively, Lizard's version of Softimage would be nice :D

Unfortunately no, I have to start the mapping again as it seems once you've closed it, it doesn't like editing them again, so when I added more detail on the arms it buggered it! Lmao. Oh well at least I only had that one bit done.
Started a new yeah in college, so already I'm loaded down with work, obviously this is bottom of the pile, its even below relaxing.

If I get anything done I'll be sure to post it :)
