So.... you think we are alone in this universe or do we have friends light years away?
First of all those who say the bible says we are alone, that is BS. No where does it say that we are alone infact i do believe a verse in John scholars believe actually may support the theory of we are not alone.
Reason i say this is because if there is a God i do believe we must not be alone either that or the human race will still last for alot longer and we will colonize the universe, however if there is not id say there is a more of a chance just one life having a planet.
So what do you believe, aliens wise?
A) They do not exist... period.
B) They exist, but we have not encountered them yet
C) They exist, and they have visited earth at some point.
C
Because I don't beleive that some of the stories to explain UFO sightings are satisfactory.
Also, a lot of descriptions of aliens that have visited people seem to match. And don't give me anything about people making it up because they often can't remember until put under hypnosis, in which state they can't make it up.
B
I do believe in aliens, but not in the way you mean. I reckon there are probably some kind of primative animals on a distant planet somewhere. I don't think that they would be as smart as or smarter than humans.
QuoteAlso, a lot of descriptions of aliens that have visited people seem to match.
Maybe because they all use the same clichéd description of big eyes and heads, slim bodies, saucer shape ships, flashing lights in the sky and of course; anal probing.
Its a called ufo phemenon.People dont understand what exactly it is.it may be a satellite, space station, supply ship, old debris from gemini/apollo era. There is still debris from apollo era floating and slingslot between here and sun.It cant bring it down from above forever.
There are to many different non matching descriptions of aliens given actually.
It is very very unlikely that this planet alone harbours life, I suspect though that very few "life zones" produce beings capable of travel between stars, there is no immediate evolutionary need to do so, unless your a bunch of dimwits who mess your home up so much that you have too...
I can't see why BBB thinks we are so smart, on some measures Humans are the dumbest bunch of own nest soiling cretins this planet has yet produced.
Well, flying saucers could be cliche, but there was a french luitenant who worked out that if you wanted to run a craft using radiation from the sun you would need to have a large circular plate, so you'd have a large circular craft. Also, this method of flying would be practically silent.
And okay, maybe the descriptions of the aliens could be stemming from a cliched idea, but how do you explain the matching physical afflictions that victims often have as a result?
C
But instead of aliens it's more likely we were placed here to colonize the planet and left unattended for a purpose. Probably by beings like us. We may be in a galaxy far away from the war that is really going on. And we may be here to preserve the human race. They'll most likely contact us and tell us where not to explore to avoid the warzones once we achieve space flight past our solar system. Or they may not for fear of leading the enemy to Earth! Anyone that may have been abducted from here is probably set up with colonizing another planet.
All this talk is scary, I'm scaring myself! Makes me want to believe there's a higher being that is going to not let anything happen to us, lol. Oh ya, Christianity.
B)
There is just NO WAY the creation of the Universe spurred only ONE random incident of "The LifeSupporting Enviroment".
Sure there is no nearby place that can support Carbon Based life, but surely there is a place elsewhere among the stars. Maybe it even supports other kinds of live besides Carbon Based. :-)
However, even though I say they most likely exist, doesn't mean I'm saying there is VASTLY Intelligent life ready to blow us to bits.

True, there are probably other materials that can compose life. Supposedly i do believe scientists believe Saturn's moon Titan could support silicone based life.

All you have to do is compare us to animals. We are infinitely more intelligent. Even some of the stupidest of us are smarter than most animals.
Oh... and the fact that we have achieved some incredible technological advances. The best that the animals have ever done are dams made of wood, nests and deep burrows underground.
We have built skyscrapers, cars, aircraft, spacecraft, for christs sake... we have even had men walking on the moon! There is just no comparison to that.

It's not exactly a matter of Intelligence but more or less Creativity. We are curious critters who will go at any length to achieve our goals. Our fellow Earthlings just do things as they have for their existance. WE are the risk takers, which is why we've gone so far.
@Anyone who ACTUALLY thinks it's just Humans "killing" the planet... We weren't around as long as the other lifeforms of Earth. When we hit the scene, it was already "dying". Put the pieces together. :P

And the ecosystem if we continue.
Judging Humans to be clever because they do the sort of things Humans do, and every other being as dumb because they don't, is not intelligent its just smug.
Was ww1 Intelligent? ww2? Atomic bombs? Humans are a recent mutation, if you define intelligence as something only humans have, then clearly you are right, but it isn't.

Hmm, no. It was doing perfectly well until about the beginning of the 20th century.
I agree with BBB. Maybe there are dinosaurs or some furry critters on distant planets, but no intelligent life (at least not intelligent enough to visit us).

But why do you think this? you have no evidence at all and no rational reason for thinking that might be the case. We are not "intelligent" enough to visit them yet and the way things are going here, probably never will be.
The simple explanation is that we have developed a self obsessed sense of superiority over all the other beings on our planet, and have defined Intelligence as something that is uniquely Human. If we did meet Aliens we would probably refuse to accept their Intelligence unless they behaved just like us.
As a species we have completely failed to learn even one "language" used by another species on this planet, we say its because they don't have any, but clearly they do communicate...
On some levels we are very smart, but on others we are very stupid.
I have often thought that if aliens did visit our planet, they would take one look at us and decide that attempting to communicate would be futile and very dangerous.

There is no evidence that aliens exist or not, but there are much more theorems/reasons for them to exist.
I wouldn't doubt the existence of Aliens because there is so many worlds out there and we just haven't found one that could support Carbon based life-forms yet. But I doubt there would be a civilization that is far more advanced, like sci-fi advanced (Warp drives, Faster than Light speed travel) chances are they might be looking for us as well but the distance is space makes it nearly impossible but I'm sure, eventually we will find life and if not we will still keep searching.

5. Vacation
6. Find the source of all the crap radio signals they picked up.
7. Kill the Idiot who sent a machine into space with a record strapped to it. (Left dent in their craft)
TONS of possibilities.
cheesepuffly, you dint put might exist
Honostly said I think that thinking that there is no other lifeform in the universe than what we know from our own planet is rather ... er .. less smart .. How sentient they may be? I have no idea ...
We hardly even know how big the universe even is and when just counting suns we speak of billions, not even mentioning planets. It would imo be really weird if this planet would be the only planet in the entire universe that holds life.
On the question if we ever met them, only the ones with a very strong imagination ....
(Imagine us travelling through space for years to than only have a looksee at an other sentient race and not make our presence known to them .... just think about the stuff we already send into space, including human DNA .. I'd imagine that any sentient race would probably send stuff into space long before they can actually move themselves into space and specially to other planets)
That said, I feel it could very well be possible that we are one of the older/oldest sentient races in the Uni.....

The same reason we would want to visit them: Exploration.

That would depend on how you define our age. Current thinking puts us at a mere few hundred thousand years, barely enough time for the neighbour's to come round going "aaaaw arn't they cute, coochy coochy coo" :-D.
Of course Our genetic ancestry is allot older than that, probably in the order of 3,800 million years.
The neighbour's could have been visiting at any point in that time and we would have no idea about it, lets face it Its only for about the past century or so that we could have any hope at all of making any sensible observations or records of such events. We are not an old race even compared to the other races on this planet.
I think our current way of dating fossils and such is way off and is giving us all wrong answers, leading us to believe that we are a million years old when we are only five or six thousand.

Seeing that it takes 1000s or perhaps even 1.000.000s of years for sentient races to evolve and we have not found any indication of any other sentient race makes it easy to think it
might be possible that we are one of the older sentient races.
In the end I know nothing, I'm just stating some possibilities :)

As far as I'm concerned "sentience" simply means a being that has concious thought. All it requires to do that is to possess a brain, that is what they are for. Ant's are sentient.

Oh your one of them... I feel very sorry for you.
Not read this topic, and I hope I don't offend anyone by expressing my opinion on A:
If you believe this, you are an ignorant fool. Probably religious and believe strictly that whatever god(s) you have created the earth and everything on it and thats that.
If you take into account the size of the galaxy, then the size of the whole universe, believing that there is NOTHING else out there is downright diabolical. The size is mind-boggling. Nobody can even hope to begin to understand just how big the universe actually is, so its safe to say that somewhere, conditions where right, and boom (or 'squelch') an alien race.
As for between B and C, I haven't read anything about it so I can't voice my opinion. It wouldn't surprise me if they had visited before but it was all hushed up, as we all know that stuff goes on that nobody ever knows about.
I'd laugh if it was like Torchwood. (Dunno if you Americans even know of that programmes existence.)
It would actually be awesome if it was anything like Torchwood.
If one in a million stars had a life supporting planet, there would be Billions of life supporting planets, If one in a million of those managed to developed viable Interstellar flight, there would be millions of space faring species...However the chances that any of them would just happen to be passing by us within the tiny time span that we have been looking for them is so small that it easily explains why we have not seen any at all, and probably never will. The Universe is a very very big place.

If there are aliens, do you suppose they sit around wondering if humans exist? :P
or maybe there are other humans sitting around wondering if aliens exist and one of them is suggesting that other humans might exist wondering if other humans might exist and so on
Maybe
I believe that aliens do exist but not in the way they are commonly portrayed in the media. The fact is that a majority of humanity sees aliens as super advanced races that would like to eradicate every last one of us[i.e War of the Worlds and independance day, although both are very good.] If you take into account the number of earth like planets there are in the galaxy alone, and then take into account the likelihood of those harboring life, then those that support intelligent life, then those that are capable of building an engine of some sort to propel them halfway across the galaxy. If you take in to account all those factors, wouldn't any alien race that discovers us to want to teach us and bring us up to their standards? Because, if they discover a planet like Earth, it would prove to be a vital place to trade and become allies with once, if we are not already up to, their level of technology.
Any non aggressive races discovering us, would probably take one look at the way we treat other species and place a security quarantine on the whole planet... :-D
See south park episode.
I wish I could find that clip... (I know the one you are talking about... "GREETINGS MARKLAR!!")
Granted, however, if a more peaceful and advanced alien race were to discover us, we could use their technology to begin colonizing other worlds. If we do that, large portions of people would leave the planet, giving more land back to nature and lowering the population here on Earth. I use the California and Yukon Goldrush emigrations As a point of reference.
Here is the only problem I could see with that idea... The only way we could get their tech is by force, cause NO species in the right mind would DARE help our egotistical butts.
I mean we can hardly look to our OWN kind for this kind of support. What makes one think that others will help us?

I doubt it. Emotions are a higher order function.
Any living creature would die in minutes without emotions, or bulletproof armour (Cybermen/Daleks :-P).
Um...there are people now who are emotionless, they're called among other things "psychotics". Humans could exist quite well without emotions, but they are a function of the 'reptile' part of our brain which is the core section. That means we started very emotional, with the rational part of our brains developing later.
This leads me to believe the truth in this:
Quote from: mrtwosheds on August 21, 2009, 09:56:09 PM
Most illogical, emotions are a most basic and essential survival trait, evolution would ensure that they did not lose them.
But, I feel that once a civilization advances far enough they can ditch emotions if they choose with no real ill effects. We're doing that sort of thing right now by developing logic engines and computers, who will in the future decide things for us on a strictly rational basis.
I only hope we keep our humanity when this happens... our compassion.

Actually, lets try a bit of natural selection logic here:
two people:
Person A has emotions
Person B doesn't
A cat is in a burning building, who is more likely to try to save that cat and likely remove themselves from the gene pool?
I also put it to you that a living thing could survive without emotions, they'd just have to know how to survive in their higher brain.
It's no longer about survival you know. Emotions drive invention. Invention keeps that person who rescues the kitty safe.
No, necessity drives invention, emotionless would see a problem and find the most logical way to handle it.

emotions are something that every creature has.
emotions determine who's bad and who's good, they determine right from wrong, anger from love, being comfortable from uncomfortable, they derive what perspective you take of everything you see, they determine whether you are happy or sad, what you feel like eating, whether you are bored or excited, they derive so much, that anything without emotions is a computer program... Example: if there was a race of emotionless creatures they would have killed themselves out, because they would have no feeling of emotions, no feeling of right or wrong, or they would sit there doing nothing because they have no interest of doing ANYTHING.. they would have no interest in communicating with each other, no (feeling) of hunger, (eventually starving themselves) and they would be disabled from imagining anything too, in other words, they would be a bunch of computers, with nothing to do really.
oh yes, and who's to say that the person with emotions can't have an emotion that HATES cats??? emotions can be either way... :-P

2 things drive invention...
If I had no emotions, when would it get done? When it had to be done. If I did, look, I did it much earlier then it was EVER needed and not only get to feel accomplishment and good about myself but use it.

Without emotions, you wouldn't understand that there was a problem, and you wouldn't even understand that logic was the way to deal with it.
That's why Vulcans have emotions, they just choose not to show them.
They've sort of trained themselves to think without emotion so much, and for so long that they don't know that they can have emotion.
The question isn't so much whether if they exist or not, it's where they exist (at least to me).
Some people say Earth is extremely lucky for its perfect life harboring conditions. My thinking towards that is a little different. Of all the galaxies in that infinite universe, of all the stars in the galaxies of that universe, of all the planets of the stars of the galaxies in the universe, there will be some planets that will have that "perfect" condition, and Earth is one of them. Scale the number down, and thats how many may have life.
How long did it take for humans to develop this society, technology, etc? Thousand years give or take? Chances are, at some point of time, in that vast vaaaast time-line of the universe, one of those planets will have had 'intelligent' life.
