My HDD died, my newer one, my 320GB and the one that held everything for modding. EVERYTHING.
Reactor Wars is dead now. So are many other things. I am calling anyone I ever sent anything to so to please reply here and PM me information and a method to download it and have it again.
Jamsh, the SVN is dead, we can export our WCs to get a current look at it, the WC is on my main HDD and thus even if you fubarred I will have it.
The DF DLL can be reconstructed as I included the tack on source in with the beta of the pack. Same with the GH maps. It is simply a matter of loading a stock DLL project, throwing int he new code classes/templates, and running with it.
I
will be recovering this data, but it will take a large amount of money and time and effort. I might make a PayPal donate thingy some time later to work on it too, and this will suck in what was going to be my new PC fund.
LMM1 source is safe, the useless mess it is, and thus that can be finalized if any more edits are needed.
MRVP 2.0 is all included in XSI and MSH form so even without the source MAX files for some stuff that will live on.
Aside from LMM1 and MRVP 2.0, I am done modding (for now). I will still be around but I will put my time and effort into other things or getting the money to recover the data. Once that data is recovered I will mod again. I doubt anyone realizes how much was lost here, although it was only a 320 GB HDD, it was compressed and was 90% BZ2 modding. aRc is effectively dead until it is recovered as well.
I will not be passing mods to anyone else if assets are retrieved. Only those already out there for others to work on will have this done (MRVP). I can still beta test Flesh Storm II, so don't worry about that BBB, but aside from testing and consultation I just quit. With how much I lost there is no point in continuing to work on such things. I am put back over 2 years, the 2 most fruitful years I have ever had.
EDIT:
And if anyone knows anything knows anyone who does data recovery plz tell me.
Thinking about these ppl: http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/hard-drive-recovery/ (edit: went with another company, will list later, they were great)

Took me a bit to break down the HTML to work for BBCode.
I just backed up Fleshstorm 2.
This sent a serious chill down my spine.
I was planning mass backups to DVD this weekend. It died too early.
Any idea how/why it died? Symptoms? Does it even spin up (by listening)? Burnt silicon smell?
I've never used a data recovery service, but I was pondering of doing that once, back in the late 1980's, when a hard drive for a business died (my fault). It was a 100MB IDE MFM drive (and I still have it, heh).
Good luck.
*Ammo*
If you manage to get the data back, will you work on it again or not? I can't beleive this has happened...
In terms of the pack, can we still get MRVP and DF finished to the same extent we planned or not? I have exported (and backed up) the AP in its current state, along with all my current modding files for serenesis and utilities. Anything you sent me will likely be in there too.
DF and MRVP will be completed.
RW is dead unless I get the source back.
HDD Clicks very loudly the moment the tower powers it on. Total 6 to 10 clicks have occurred in total, data is likely mostly there, but it will need the platters individually scanned which will cost a ton of money. Some services give you a file index and ask what you want to recover, so IO am trying to get everything I can other than the modding stuff (that MUST be recovered) back from else where.
What brand HDD was this? I recently bought an HDD which now holds much of my stuff and more is being moved to it every day.
It's not like I haven't already gotten scared into making backups every week but I just want to make sure I didn't just waste money on a fubar HDD.
WD 320gb
That being said I don't HAVE a disposable income, that was the biggest HDD I've ever had, since I don't count the POS Seagate 1.5 TB external I had to exchange and then return.
This is seriously *Ammo*ing scary.
It's possible to replace the control board on the hard drive. Sometimes that can be the cause of the clicking. ANd that's easy. Just get an identical HD and swap the boards. Maybe the HD is fine and the board just went bad.
Noted I am done modding FOR NOW. Basically everything I ever wanted to work on was started in some form on the drive, so thus I have nothing to mod.
Squirrel, when I say clicking, I am understating. It sounds like Thor's hammer in this thing.
Still. The board controls how the hard drive is accessed. As long as your hard drive isn't getting scratched, then there is a possibility that it can be fixed cheaper.
I've had a hard drive have clicking problems. Replacing the board fixed me right up. Maybe not all cases will be like mine though.
Would a company that recovers data try this before the clean room step?
Clean rooms cost $$$. Depends on how much you're willing to pay them.
Backups are always cheaper than recovery.

Ask them to see what they will/can do. They will determine what's best to do first, before doing open heart surgery as the last resort.
Here's a link to another data recover service (in Canada tho) that gives audio examples of hard drive problems (I didn't check them though to see if they work, couldn't bother downloading browser plugins). Does yours sound like any of them?

"Western Digital desktop drive with bad heads clunking."
I had just consolidated all my files for backing up, hence why I lost so much. I am normally rather decentralized with various slightly out of date copies about my network. Not yesterday.
For the control board I wouldn't go to the clean room guys just yet. Usually it's a fair chuck of change before they even look at it to estimate the actual cost.
I'd call up some local computer repair shops and ask them how much it would be to test that. They might do it for less than the cost of a new HD if they already have one in stock
Otherwise its about a 40-50 dollar buy. (http://www.pricewatch.com/browse/hard_removable_drives/sata_320gb) A pretty easy fix on you own, usually about 4-5 screws and a ZIF Connection
I am looking at places that test Level 1, then Level 2, then Level 3. Physical failure is LV3.
EDIT:
Looks like $965...
Maybe I should get a list of everything and 'sell' some stuff from the recovery to pay for it.
Man this sounds familiar.
My condolences, I know exactly how you feel.
There's a guy around here who will do that work for $500. but, if he's unsuccessful $100. You up to mailing in your hard drive down here in Alabama? If that interests you, I'll give you the information you need to send it in.
The place I have now has given me the info on how they do it and I like it. They will be removing the platters in a clean room and not just repairing the heads and hoping for the best like many companies do.
The issue is the clean room itself costs most of the price.
I think I will do some 'modding for hire' for a bit. Basically anything I would have NEVER done before or not had at the top of my list. (Actually, you all know how I am, it would modding nudging toward the donate button.) Unless I can find another lawyer in need of a logo, that was a nice $100 those 2 years ago when that happened.
I am also thinking of doing a ton of mid range to low poly space ships and putting them as a big game ready pack on turbo squid, but that might never pay off and just waist time. I basically want to use some of my darn skills to make some money, not sit at a cash register all day pressing buttons.

You could take up bank fraud. I hear there is a fair bit of money to be made.
Or you could become a prostitute!

And all of a sudden, pressing buttons on the cash register doesn't seem so bad after all.

Ten innocent men. Or "people," for you politically correct.
Political correctness is a load of bullhoot. Man is the correct name for our species. Look at others, for example. Lions. The male is a Lion, the female a Lioness. But ours is woman instead of maness.
"And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." - Genesis 2:23 KJV

Enough discussing my distorted world views (or going off on tangents from them).

Now i know why i backup every once in awhile...
but to have the computer die just before you back it up!... I hope the best for you and your comp, i sure hope you get all your data back, sure is sad when this happens...
I backed up, just... not the right stuff...
Aww man, that sucks! I've had that happen to be before... twice!
The time my laptop hard drive failed, I was able to freeze the hard drive and recover back most of the data. There must have been a head crash, as some of the files could not be recovered.
I can't wait for Blu-Ray disks to get cheaper (especially the dual layer ones). Hard drives now are so big (not to mention an array of them) that you'd need hundreds of dvd's to make backups. Not a fun thing to do (and even less fun working out a system to sort the dvd's and retrieve the data you want). Not to mention, DVD's eventually, so backing up to another medium would be a necessity as well.
According to http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010100071+1087444985&QksAutoSuggestion=&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Configurator=&Subcategory=71&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc= (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010100071+1087444985&QksAutoSuggestion=&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Configurator=&Subcategory=71&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=) , dual-layer (50GB) bluray discs are about $15. Each.
For me, "RAID" is the way to go. An 'internal' 1TB drive (i.e. 20x larger than a bluray disc) is $80, which is only 5.3x the cost. Get an external drive caddy that connects to a USB/eSATA port on your computer, and you can drop in as many of those 'internal' HDs as you like. Store those HDs in a safe place, not connected to your computer, and you've got a much cheaper backup situation. Yes, your eggs are in a larger basket, but a drive that's powered on once or twice a month for backups is likely to last a long time.

I totally agree on GSH's faith in RAID systems. When i set my studio up thats exactly the kind of thing im going for. If i remember rightly, i found a nice LACIE drive caddy for about £300, including two 1.5TB drives, cant go wrong really...
Lock the drives in a safe somewhere, one at home, one in a bank safebox or something. Jobs a good 'un.
I'm currently using a SYBA enclosure, quite nice. Two fans to keep it cooled.

Except my PC wipes out any USB2.0 connected HDD and possibly others. An IDE2USB1.1HDD is the ony external I have gotten working without wiping.
Then you've got an issue with your OS. It's not the fault of the drive.

Duu?
I actually suspect the USB firmware.
As users of RAID controllers what brand would you recommend? I bought an adaptec RAID controller to upgrade to SATA and the controller itself has failed on me twice within a year. I'd heard adaptec was pretty good but my experience has been just the opposite.
I'm not using a real-RAID for offline backups. Just a lot of inexpensive disks that plug into an external box that my computer uses eSATA to talk to. When the drive is offline for all but an hour a month, there's no need to pay $$$ for a RAID card.
-- GSH
Once I save up some money, I'm tempted to get three 1 tb harddrives to set up a raid 5. My motharboard supports it along with a lot of more expensive +$200 motherboards. I think even my old motherboard might have supported raid 5. The only issue is it requires three harddrives and 1/3 of each is used up for parity backup. Raid 5 uses data stripping for speed and distributed parity in case one drive dies.
If you do get your computer up and running, raid 5 may be a good alternative as long as your mb supports it. Windows XP and Vista unfortunately don't support anything but raid 0 and possibly raid 1. Raid 0 being mirroring and I think raid 1 being data stripping.
I'm getting a Blu-Ray recorder.
Maybe newegg was reading the above. Sale (thru the end of the month): 1TB drive, external docking station. $72. Details here: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/17780 (http://techreport.com/discussions.x/17780) . It's a manual backup strategy, but so are burning any sort of cd/dvd/bluray.
-- GSH
Would a drive like that one be suitable for non-backup purposes? As in a general purpose hard drive?
Follow the links on techreport.com . That HD runs slower (5900rpm) than most desktop HDs (7200rpm). Faster than most laptop HDs, though. Running it over USB would be a further speed tax if you're using it for general purpose HD.
I wouldn't boot off of such a drive, but as a secondary drive for large media files, it'd probably do great. I already do that at home -- have a small & fast (150GB at 10,000rpm) boot drive, and a larger & slower (300GB at 7200rpm) secondary drive.

What if it was firewire?

What if it was firewire?
Hmm, it would be more or less the same with 1394A, having a little less CPU overhead than USB 2.0. This is partly one reason why a good percentage of DAW recording use FW, due to less process load and therefore has better sustained transfers. Well unless you have a 1394B setup (800 Mbits and higher), then it would travel about twice as fast. Firewire can be more expensive too. Then again, USB 3.0 is on the horizon, with 10 times faster theoretical throughput than USB 2.0.
Is it possible to boot from fire wire? I mean how would your bios know where to look.
Company reports 100% data recovery, but now I ow about $1K. :-o

A thousand dollars for data recovery? What the *Ammo* man where do these people get off?
Did you like, know it was gonna cost that before hand or did they tell you AFTER they did it so that you didn't have a choice?
Well, that dollar amount was expected. It was said initially it would cost $965. Is there an installment plan or is it one big fat lump sum check that goes bye-bye?
I knew before hand. Its actually like 900 or so. It was the cheapest and the best company at the same time. Rare combination.
I paid lump. Or someone else did and I owe them.

When you compress a HD its heavily shortens its lifespan. Not a good idea to do.
Put your hard drive in a freezer for 24 hours and backup as much data as you can and repeat process as needed.

I still wonder how the government can say prices are going down and gas just went up 40 more cents.
Oi, don't you dare complain about your petrol prices.
Its £1.04+ a litre here right now and its done nothing but go up aside from about 3 weeks where it dropped to £0.90 again but has now regained that diabolical figure.
Thats $1.70 a litre. Bastard.
And yeah, you must have some pretty valuable stuff to blow a grand on a hard drive. I'd cut my losses.
What's the conversion from the "litre" to the gallon?
Lets not get on gas prices now, but to point out, here everything is rather sped out and public transportation isn't the best, even in the Public Transportation capital I am in, New Jersey. Or was that the interstate capital...
But back to subjects, I do not know how my data will be sorted as externals are normally FAT32 and the drive was NTSF, and I had very deep file folder structures.

FAT32 is terrible isn't it? Isn't that the one where files cant be over like, 2gb? Everything I have is either NTFS or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", which I know nothing about but it seems to do fine. Hard drives aren't my forté :)
External came today. It is hooked to the Network External's USB so its tripply slow to access but it was the safest method. Many DVDs are burning.

Yup I know it can't. Shared partition is in NTFS. :) I didn't know that the 1st time though. That was fun!

Check the board on the hard drive, dust and anything that should not be on it.
remove the board and clean the connectors. Sometimes heat expansion can move something.
Check all the chips and components to make sure something is not loose. solder it back. Also check for Black or damaged components. "Takes a long time"
Use an external hard drive connector, USB with independent power supply. Connect to PC by USB.
If by some pot luck it works, copy Everything ASAP.
I nearly lost my 750GB hard drive, until I relized all the dust went on the bord and messed it up, works fine now.

Did you ask the recovery service what exactly happened? Was it maybe a bad disk track, IC, discrete component, servo, overvoltage, overcurrent, yadda yadda (well, not the yadda part)?
We had a color copier die here at the office (it runs, but outputs were smeared), and they said it was the motherboard, probably due to long fluctuations in supply voltage (but they weren't really sure).
