i uninstalled steam, and reinstalled it.
how do i get my saved games back? i have a file recovery program but i need to know WHERE they ARE.
help anyone?
Saved games meaning what?
Saved games meaning game files?
Or saved games meaning actual games?
Saves are unrecoverable unless you copy the folder.
Some games park their saves under c:\program files\Steam (and its subfolders). Other games save to $MyDocs. Other games might place things elsewhere. Given that there's 900+ games on steam (according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(content_delivery) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(content_delivery)) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Steam_titles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Steam_titles) ), you'll have better luck if you specify which game saves you're trying to restore.

Saints Row 2 mainly.
I'm also having trouble with a file recovery program, anyone know a good free one that will allow me to recover files without needing another HD?
Let me get this straight.
You removed a game... and didn't back up the saves first?
File recovery of the type you need is 90% failure. Often getting the program to dot he recovery will write over the part of the HDD where the data resides since it was DELETED and slated to be written over.
I have a .bat file on my system that copies all game saves that live under C:\Program Files\... into $MyDocs\My Games. (Just a bunch of lines that look like 'xcopy /D /Y "C:\Program Files\Path_To_Game_Saves_Folder" "C:\Documents And Settings\nathan\My Documents\My Games\GameName"). Run that early, run that often. My normal backup procedure runs that, then compresses up $MyDocs for archives/burning.
I really prefer parking saves under $MyDocs, as it centralizes everything for backups.

well, we all know Steam is phail. ....
I have a recovery program that shows my entire steam folder and mostly in good condition. But it wont let me write it to C drive. I need another HD to hook up?

Usually, a USB stick will work. Your saves ought to be smallish.
But, the rule remains: you're responsible for your backups. Always have been, always will be.

I forgot that steam was so stupid that it saved games in it's folder.
I'm used to things saving in my docs or somewhere "smart"....

Do not blame something for your own mistakes. 90% of my steam games place saves in the My Docs folder. The game you refer to is NOT a Valve game, this means that it put its saves in the same place it would had it not been bought on Steam, that being its own directory. It is nothing but
your own fault and you should stop
whining and
suck it up.

I WANT to use a file recovery to recover the files.
Problem is, I CANT FIND THE DAMN SAINTS ROW 2 SAVES ANYWHERE!
Just search My Computer for the extension. If there is no extension, use a portion of name of the saved game(s).

Most likely saving the file recovery program wrote over them after they became free memory.
well, aparently after i reinstalled SR2, the saved games were still there.
But I still want to know WHERE they're saved for backup purposes....
