Title: Mission 10
Post by: Der Vampyr Engel on December 13, 2005, 02:31:43 PM
I think this is the right mission where you get a recycler and a turret, you get your drop ship shot down and you have to set up a base near a massive Scion base.

A lot of people (including me ) had quite a bad time with it well I have a solution give the player a squad of Sabre tanks and add another turret and providing you are quick and can set upi the Recycler quickly to build a base you should find that the tanks can take care of any incoming Scion squads, build quick though and get your gun towers up quick.

Well what I am suggesting in the final official 1.3 patch( if there is one) is that minor change to the mission, I don't think it needs more than that though I shall have to test it more but that should be enough for most players 8-)

You referring to the one where you have to navigate your recy past the ice? this is my favorite!

I usually take out the scion base before I get the recy.

Best part about this mission is that you get a satchel charge.

I didn't find that mission particually difficult, navigating past the ice was the hardest part but after that it's relatively easy. I don't think it needs to be made any easier...

The first time i played that mission i found it very hard.  I couldnt keep up with navigating the recycler and defending from waves of warriors and lancers.  I got bored after a while and started strapping satchel charges to the ice rhinos....

(I did later finish it)

Well actually I didn't go into the Scion base and blow it up but if that is the way to do it I mean don't the Scion units actually attak you or anything? they just let you walk into the base and blow it up?

Seems if anything it needs to be made a little harder then, you just get a squad to take care of the Scion rush I can set up the base or fight not both at the same time and especailly with the Scion rush with this patch, the 1.2 version wasn't so bad but this is mad a little, still if anyone goes to the Scion base to blow up the recycler and Forge I think there should be more than enough units to make sure that dosen't happen, I may start doing that in future, take out the Scion base before setting up the Rec

DVE, I believe that mission (and a few others) have already been fixed a while ago in the private beta. If I find some time this week I'll check to make sure.  The way that ST mentioned is not the proper "scripted" way to handle the mission and I believe he does it without the help of any AI.

Not sure why your bringing this up again though? (http://www.bzuniverse.com/forum/index.php/topic,2078.0.html)

heheh, no, no ai help you just keep sniping scouts and use em for suicide bombing runs. in 1.2 and 1.3 public the ai won't start attacking your recy until it's under your command.

The real reason you have satchel charges is to blow up the ice patches so the recy can navigate itself to the nav.

Am I the only person that used the 3d radar to navigate the ice?

i just looked at the ground...

and this mission should be much easier, the difficulty was because the idel disbatcher sends all the units at once, which should be fixed

Heh heh, I shoot a few minigun rounds at the poor Ice Rhino's and make them follow me until the ice breaks. :-D

I navigate the ice just fine using the radar.

By the time the first attack happens I am in a position to send the rec to a small spot of safe land while I take out the attackers.

Then I continue on to the main Nav becon to setup a base.

Took me several trys to figure out the best way to do this but, still.

The radar shows the ridge the rec can drive on just fine.

You just have to tell him to follow you, but wait at all the sharp corners so the dumb AI does not try to cut the corners and fall in.

Anytime you ask AI to follow you they will literally do just that and make a beeline right towards you unless there is an obstacle in the way.

at the last of the ice travel there is one corner of thin ice to travel accross and you have to keep the Rec as close to the land edge as possible for a bit then you are home free.

Guess what?? no cheat codes needed :-D :-D

I did a mixture of the Ice Rhinos and the 3D radar. :)

When I first played the level and angered the Ice rhino I didn't expect it to fall through the ice so you should have seen the look on my face when it sunk. :D

Besides the ice, as Spawn mentioned 1.3 sends ALL enemy units on the map to attack you several minutes into the game.  THIS is what a lot of people have trouble with...

I find that BZ tends to show me that I'm in a rut when it hands me my head.  By that I mean everyone has a pattern when they start building a base, and if you're losing while 'doing your thing' you need to rethink 'your thing'.  Like this:

I dropped the Recy, sent the Transport back a ways, and got killed by the wave of attackers.
I dropped the Recy, sent the Transport back a ways, shaved some time off of all this and got a PS up before getting killed...
I dropped the Recy, kept my Turret and Scout alive, shaved some more time off, and got a PS and COMM up before getting killed...
Eventually I actually bullied everything enough to get a precious GT up right as the attack wave was ripping us apart, and it did no good.  THAT made me rethink... as there was no way I'd do things any faster than that.

After that I dropped the Recy, kicked out two Scavs, and then proceeded to ring my Recy with Turrets.  You have plenty of time and scrap to make a LOT of Rats, and they took out the whole attack wave right nice while they were distracted with the Scavs!  It gets a little quiet for awhile after that, plenty of time to toss up GT's enough to handle the remaining attack waves.

Rethink...

Png, yes, lossless (unlike jpeg), and it is very small for computer generated pics.

What are the coordinates for the AIP debugger you got there?

Agreed, all the units coming in at once was pretty intimidating. And it may be a little taxing for someone whose doing that mission for the first time. But its the rushes like that where they try to hit you while you're vulnerable that let you redeem the best victories.

Actually that is the problem I have, its not so much the amount( although that can be a problem) its the fact you get an attack while you are setting up the Rec.

I was thinking though It would be quite realistic say you get to the set up base point you get every thing set up and rather the one or 2 or even the light hovertank rush, the Scions get their vehicles ready and you have a heavy attack and not just from the valley where the scavenger is but also from where the you brought the Recycler convoy on. You could have from that side Lancers,'Sentires, Warriors and Scouts and from the valley Maulers ad Titans The Titan's unless really given good directional  aip programming can't come from the Rec convoyside otherwise that would be good to make those units attack the base from random positions.

That would be a challenge, the player would be forced to build an iron base , if not then he could still easily lose his Rec and Factory and lose the game and with Maulers attacking his/her gun towers and from all sides he wouldhave to crank out units yet try to keep some to attack the Scion base.

And if there are enough Scion units they could make a real fight of it and where the dust off site is you could make another heavily fortified base nearby if you want to make Mission 10 a challenge :-D

Don't forget that the point of the SP mission arc is to relate a story AND prepare a new player for playing the game.  It's not meant to provide a challenge to an accomplished player.

That being said it would be interesting to have the SP missions redone along the lines of a challenge to existing players...  (well, don't go NATTY on us but it would be nice to have it a bit more realistic....)

Yes thats why I would say make sure there is a calm before the storm so players can set up a good strong base and get a good strong tank force out,  once it has been set up then the heavy attacks begin alternating with light attacks, Avatar
