Title: FINALLY! Discovered the cause of stuttering in pb4a
Post by: TheJamsh on February 04, 2009, 11:51:09 AM
Its that FPS counter!

some users around here such as myself and feared_1 occasionally experience a slight amount of in game stutter. The stutter is only minute and difficult to see if you arnt looking hard enough, but the ground can quickly 'jump' a small amount, noticeable when you move forward with speed.

disabling the framerate counter stops this, it seems everytime the counter refreshes it refreshes the screen too, very annoying to be honest. at first i though it was AIP logging, but its the FPS counter causing the issue.

Just thought you should know!

/me thought that was fixed.
I really don't see how it can be the issue, and IIRC nor can GSH. Well, just turn it off then, that's one of reasons why you can.

well turning it off stopped it. the stutter is only minimal, but annoying all the same, makes a 70 FPS game look like 30 fps

I'm not sure on the causes of that bug. But, testers have said (and if I'm wrong, respond in the private boards) that this seems better in latest private builds.

Can't say I had ever seen it.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who experienced the stutter bug when the FPS counter was up.  I think I stumbled upon the fix by accident, but it definitely helps.

The game looks the same to me regardless of the counter being on or off.

Believe me, some of us can notice a blatant difference.  With my comp, its as if it pauses every 1/10th of a second for 1/20th of a second when the fps counter is on.

For me it usually makes a big stutter right when the shot that I fired hits something. That's why fighting is so nasty when that happens, because when I hit an enemy ship I lose track of them.

Turning off the FPS counter didn't work for me, it was turning off AIP logging that worked.

i was pretty sure that AIP logging was off by default, but i might be wrong.

The AIP debugger and the fps counter seem to be related.  If you turn off the fps counter, the aip debugger seems to turn off aswell.  I'm talking about the ingame aip debugger and not the one that writes the info to a text file.  The ingame aip debugger only functions when the fps counter is up.

Why do people need the AIP Debugger? It's like cheating, since you know what the AI is doing without a Satellite view.

Its for AIP makers.  To see where their AIPs are messing up.

If someone wants to deal with the annoying stuttering when they use it, that is up to them.

I don't think I've noticed any stuttering on a GTX 280 with an intel q9450.

You could get a core i7 920 for about 2-300 bucks, and an ati 4870 for under 200 bucks.

Oh, I forgot to mention, has anyone heard about that "Hydra 100" hardare that is supposed to make multiple graphics cards have linear (sometimes GREATER than linear) imporvement with ANY game. Though, little is known about it, and for all I know it could be a con. But it still would be cool if performs that well if it's released !

The Corei7 also requires a new motherboard and DDR 3 ram if I'm correct.  Both of which aren't very cheap.

I currently have a 9800 GTX so the video card is definately not the cause of the stuttering.

My system specs

Windows XP Pro
4 GB of Ram PC 800
Creative Labs XFi Game
Nvidia 9800 GTX
EVGA 780i motherboard (I believe).  I'll have to verify.
Core2Duo E8400 (a 3GHz, dual core processor)

Oh yes, that's right! The mobo would be at least 240 (most are in the 300+ range). Silly me :P. The upgrade cost might actually approach 1k and it still wouldn't fix the stuttering issue (I probably just hadn't noticed it, commando's hardware is quite comparable, if not superior in, BZII's case):-(.

I don't think this stuttering issue is a hardware issue.  I have no idea what causes it.  I just know it is at its worst when the fps counter is on.

Hitting Alt + F will turn the counter off I believe.  I haven't had to turn it off in a while so I can't remember if that is the correct key combo or not.  I believe vid.showfps in the console will also disable it.

Yeah, Alt+f works.
