Problem with 1.3 MPI games locking up

Hi gang -

I have been playing BZII with the 1.3 patch (and Core66 maps) for quite a while now, and when playing games in Instant Mode (against the computer), or in Multiplayer mode (hoping others will join), I often get the computer to lock up after maybe 20 or 30 minutes.  The only thing I can do is to reboot - forget Cntl Alt Del.

I run XP on a Gigabyte K8NS Pro MB with an Athelon 64 2 Gig CPU with a Ledteck A6600 GT video card, with resolution set to 1024 x 768 32.  I only have 512 megs of RAM, so that might be part of the problem.

Anyway, does anyone have a clue as to why this might be happening?

Also - on a different note, I've read many posts over the years where people print out a file that displays what might have caused a problem with the game.  My question is, what is this file called, and where is it located?

Thanks -
Mother's Helper

Red Devil

That would be the Battlezone.log in the BZ root folder.

Edit: Do you have a software firewall?  (you'd better!)

Try doing an Alt-Tab to see if there is a firewall dialog box behind the BZ screen. Sometimes a dialog box will pop up behind the BZ screen asking if you want to allow a connection and it will hang your session If you don't respond.
What box???

ScarleTomato

RD is absolutely right, BZ wont recognize the new window and appropriately minimize in XP. Alt-Tab rarely works for me though, I always have to use 'windows key' + L to goto the user screen and log back in. If none of that works, does the light go on and off if you hit the numlock key? Thats about the best way I know of to test on the fly if a comp is completley frozen or not.
Also, try closing as many programs as you can before starting up BZ. You may try running it on a lower resolution.(but with that comp, I doubt that's the problem  )
QuoteI only have 512 megs of RAM, so that might be part of the problem.
Heheh, I seriously doubt it, I run on 256Mb DIMM and mine works fine, specially in 1.3, FE freezes on me alot tho...

Bull Dog

XP + 256mb of ram = big bottleneck.

You can also use Alt-Enter to put BZ into windowed mode or Alt-Esc to switch to the new window.

I like the NumLock light thing.

Evilreaver

Well, I'm glad it's not just me :)

I, too, have been having the hard freezing, but this has happened during LAN games (clearly, unfirewalled), and is rather annoying- especially when we are winning  :D

The whole LAN is running high-end machines, 2.5+ GHz, 1024-2048 MB RAM- so that clearly isn't the main problem...

Spawn

does battlezone.log say anyhting?
any error messages ingame?

Mother's Helper

Thanks Spawn, Red Devil and ScarleTomato for your suggestions.

I'll try playing another game and wait for the lock up and then try the screen switch trick and the num lock thing - be back later.

Note:  I saw this line about 2/3rds down the screen - Does it mean anything?
"WARN|IControl        |            icontrol:2976 |08:38:31|18656  |Unknown Justification [HCENTRE] for [Count]"

And, also this one:
"WARN|IControl        |            icontrol:3080 |08:38:26|14250  |INFO: FadeOut: Control [|EscapePanel] not found. Ignoring command"

Mother's Helper I don't see any errors.  Based on the last line, bz2 shut down the way it should.
QuoteSystem shutdown normally

Yours ended with that line which indicates that bz2 did not AV.  That will not show up if the game freezes.  When I freeze, I usually see something resembling the following.

QuoteDIAG|GLOBAL | runcodes:153 |08:52:30|858031 |[Main] Entering run code
.

Red Devil posted a good example of an AV.  That is pretty much what one looks like.  They always begin with [ E X C E P T I O N ] and end with Entering critical shutdown.

Hey guys -

I found out that this freeze up problem does NOT happen when I am playng single player maps - only when I am in multiplayer mode.

Speaking of multiplayer - has anyone tried (like I have), starting a multiplayer game and then "hanging up" the modem/DSL/Cable?  I find that the multiplayer games offer much more variety and challenge than the instant games, but I am wondering if disconnecting from the Gamespy server might contribute to the freeze up problem?  Perhaps there is a better way of playing multiplayer games - any ideas?

If you are the only person in the game, it should be treated like single player without the ability to save.  Once you get a joiner, the multiplayer code kicks in.  Until then, bz2 runs as if you are playing single player.

I guess this is kinda old by now..but oh well!

Quote from: Bull DogXP + 256mb of ram = big bottleneck.

I ran a PentiumIII 550 on an Intel Motherboard, that had a 4mb                :nuke: INTERGRTED :nuke: graphics card, and it ran perfectly, well... as perfectly as windows can run...but thats irrlevant...heh heh...:)

and it played BZ like a charm, if I retained mid level setting graphics :

MH, what happens when you choose Multiplayer, is that BZ immediately tries to access the Gamespy server and get the list of BZ games from it.

If your firewall is blocking Battlezone's (bzone.exe) access to the internet, your session will just hang and you will not be able to even start up a new MP game.

Again, Check your software firewall settings!!!

Which firewall are you using???

if you are using Kerio, there were two modes selectable when istalling it.  Depending upon which one you (or someone) chose, your incoming connections will automatically be *blocked* and you will *not* be notified:

If you are using Kerio, check to see if Enable Network security module and Enable System security module are selected.

Here is a section of the Kerio help file explaining it:

QuoteSimple ââ,¬â€ in this mode, the firewall enables all outgoing traffic and blocks any incoming communication. All network interfaces of the Kerio Personal Firewall host are automatically assigned to the Internet zone refer to chapters Rules for Applications and Trusted Area). The system security module is also disabled (see chapter System Security).

According to these settings, the firewall never asks user and follows the default rules (the Ask action is not used by default). This behavior can be changed by modification of system and network security modules.

Note: The only exception is confirmation of dial-up numbers (see chapter Checking of dialed telephone numbers) ââ,¬â€ users are always asked if a new number is dialed or when a telephone number is changed, regardless of the current firewall mode.

The Simple mode is set by default. It is recommended especially to beginners and users who cannot perform the initial configuration immediately after the installation.

Advanced (autodidactic mode) ââ,¬â€ whenever an unknown communication is detected or an unknown application is started, the firewall asks user which action is to be taken and whether a rule would be created for this action. This way, step by step, a specific firewall configuration for a host and a user is being created.

If the Advanced mode is selected, the Kerio Personal Firewall detects active network interfaces of the computer on which it is installed upon the first startup. For each interface, the user is asked whether the interface is connected to a trustworthy network or not. For details, refer to chapter Detection of new network interfaces.

The Advanced mode sets the same behavior as all previous versions of the Kerio Personal Firewall. This mode is recommended to experienced users and to those users who want to use detailed custom settings.

If you are using Kerio, in the Network Security page, there will either be a red X, a yellow question mark, or a green check mark in the various colums there.  the red X means "deny", the yellow question mark means "ask" and the green check mark means "allow" .  If it is set to ask, a dialog box will appear asking if you want to allow the connection.  It will also have a checkbox asking if you want a rule to be created.

If you have the Zone Alarm, there is an option tab where you can select the levels of notification.

Should be similar for Norton, etc.
