I like the new Battlestar Galactica fight where the 2 massive base ships fire tons of missiles, some of them nukes, at each other's broad sides, many of them smashing each other and flack in the middle. Fighters flying loose and fast in space like spacecraft should act (instead of like boats as in Star Trek).

You like inertial maneuvers, from thrusters and such, rather than non-inertial maneuvers from field generators.  That's the difference between BSG and ST, the fact that ST falls back on "thrusters" only occasionally, and instead uses warp fields and such most of the time.  I personally think ST is more realistic in that much of what I see on BSG would have me either spread out in a film over the inside of the cockpit or, at the very least, puking my guts out constantly.  :)

Sure looks like fun, though...

Star Trek's is more realistic though, after all, moving something with a huge amount of mass takes a tremendous amount of power to just move it a little bit, and they still only use impulse engines for constant power and basic thrusters for actual maneuvering.  The warp field is just a constrained field of space-time around the craft which is then moved using reactionless forces through the main space-time, allowing for seemingly ftl travel without distorting time inside the bubble.  In BSG, if the little fighters did move like that, yea, the humans would be crushed under the forces since the craft's do not have anti-gravity from what I have seen.  There are small very fast attack fighters in the Star Trek universe as well, except all I have seen have been unmanned sans the little jupiter style training craft (which are rather dangerous to fly, guess that is why they are used for training, teaches you to be very careful :P ) which are more like airforce jets...

are pilots crushed in the super-sonic fighters of today?? bsg ships go about that speed - if not slower :-P

bsg is the only realistic(ish) scifi series i have ever seen (but i havent seen star trek so i cant really compare it) but from what i have heard star trek is less realistic than starwars

and is there even g-force in space at all? theres no g
Others would merely say it was good humour.

its called fake gravity - scifi shows sometimes use it  :-P

The kind of maneuvers I have seen BSG Fighter pilots (Raptors and such things) cannot be done with current tech, they tail around 180 and hit afterburner, that would crush a human (remember, they have been accelerating the other way for a bit at first, it is not the speed that kills you, but rather the rate of change of the speed :P ).

Also, g-force is not accurate, the correct term people should use is inertia.  A 'g-force' that people think of is actually an inertia, just they rank it as a g-force because that rate it based on the power of gravity (~9.2ms**2), so a 2 g-force means they put on enough inertia to equal two times the force of gravity.  Inertia does have its own term for power, but most people are familiar with gravity so they tend to use it instead...

And I was quite certain the fighters in BSG did not have fake gravity...

I still think that tiny mass drivers in every point of a ship would be a more accurate way to simulate gravity while in space.  Gravity cannot be generated according to any known current theory of everything.  However, tiny mass drivers could send streams of point particles on something to simulate gravity along the outer surface of an object, the wave of force would also settle most of the body as well, though people would still feel odd.  Nice thing about that though is that each person could have their own power of 'gravity'/force so they could bounse around if they wanted, or try walking around in double gravity to help get stronger, and they could each go right up to each other and shake hands if they wanted, heck, one could be on the cieling and the other on the floor...  This would still not be very usable as an inertia damper (a common term/object in scifi shows like BSG and ST), because a sudden change of velocity of the ship would still be... painful.

Also, I do not really like the original 60's episodes of Star Trek (yes yes, I know, blasphemy and all that), but I do really like ST:TNG starting around the second season and the later shows (Enterprise is also a good stand-alone Sci-Fi show, but it is not Star Trek, no matter how much they want it to be.  One thing they tend to do in the ST's I like is that any technology is exaplainable, they do not try for that magic effect (well, sans Q...) that so many shows do.  That is also why I like BSG, it is explainable, although Jumping in BSG really is not explained, while Warp in ST is...

I guess with the futuristic tech in bsg they have probably found other ways to stop humans being crushed - maybe some kind of super padding inside their suits or - i dunno

we'll find out in 100 years when some of it comes true

the jumping in bsg is (i guess) basically using some kind artificial wormhole that can be opened at any point in space and its destination set anywhere else... and the reason that they cant jump very far is because it takes an incredible amount of mathematic algorithms to pinpoint the location in space - satisfied?? :-P

I think the fighters do have gravity and inertial dampening as they are staples of scifi space flight.

The best of fiction is that that only changes 1 or 2 things. Star Trek has warpfields, BSG has jumps.

actually - i think bsg fighters might be a bit slower than you think

i quickly looked up a couple of vids:

bsg - has viper flybys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ee05EJUxEw&feature=related

f-35 jsf jet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiMZO_BZVro

i reckon they go about the same speed

I think traveling at super high speeds in space is a stupid idea. There are so many things in space that are hard but small that as soon as you hit the wrong thing your ship is penetrated. You can't maneuvre at those speeds. The best idea is the folding of time and space. Walk through a portal on Earth and step onto Pluto. Now that works! I think there is actually work being done towards this somewhere. With the super computer they made the other day calculations for this might be possible. Wouldn't it be cool to be an astronaut that all he has to do is stick his head through a portal and say, "a little more to the left".
I liked the portal staging point for the ai on FE, but always wished I could build a portal in front of my factory and have ships automatically stage someplace of my choosing.
There is no knowledge that is not power.

Red Devil

Been considering giving crigs the ability to build portals, but they'd have to be expensive and you'd have to build two in order for them to work.  You can specify staging points in the AIP's now.  Should be able to build the portal in front of the Factory/Recycler and have them still respect the dropoff point.
What box???

Nielk1

I wonder if I can make a DLL to cause objects built by a factory with the correct ODF line teleport to the drop point instantly (with effect). I did get a nice simple to integrate looping animation class.

Bending space enough to be able to connect two distance points has been theorized, however it has the slight issue of you need to either have some tremendous gravitational forces (super massive blackholes) to warp the space, but that would make it undirectable/unsusable of course, or two basically rip space apart by essentially placing two metal plates (of unimaginable strength), create a magnetic field between them with enough power per second roughly equivalent to a couple super-nova's, more directable and controllable, but still outside of any nearby technology.  All things considered, ST's version is pretty plausible as even now we are capable of making distinct areas of space-time (just cannot control it in any way), but still have an issue with time dilation.  Most physical theories suppose the existance of more then three spacial dimensions, if that is true then it might be better to try to shift through the 4th dimension and see if we can see our dimensions curving in ways that we could travel to other points faster then we do now (which is how the show Babylon 5's FTL works, they just shift through the 4th dimension, what they call hyperspace).  But of course, no way to no for sure on anything until we figure out the real ToE...

Yes, assuming you could figure out where the drop-point is, maybe an armory shot would work to mark a location, or just build a building somewhere so when a unit is built at the factory it would be transported to that building instead, perhaps have it be able to 'build' something to turn it on and off as well...

@ feared1. any star wars fans willl like this variant that you can count on. its got a very star wars x-wing alliance theme to the cruisers.

@ BBB, id LOVE to have some more models, i really need a couple more scion fleet carriers for sure so send them my way! heres my email address:

freestyleflowrider89@hotmail.com. ill be sure to credit you for everything!

to everyone: its still in its very early stages. the mod was only possible because of new abilities with PB4 so almost everything ive done so far needs to be re-vamped. but ive got my summer break now so plenty of time!

here are some more screenies of the ship ive shown you. (please note the extra scion buildings shown are for ANOTHER mod for release in the VERY DISTANT FUTURE =])

[the building on the left is the flag which determines where the penetrator will land and deploy. the flag even points as to where itll go!]

[the penetrator fires up its main deflector shield. this is independantly destroyable "its shields are down!"]

[Twin penetrators firing turbo lasers, repulsor missiles and static discharge at each other. explosions will be re-vamped]

[new! the penetrator deploys its twin landing barges and 6 fighter support craft]

[an AAN probe (NOT XMOD's!) and scion Neurone balance testing. bonus points if you can guess where the model bits came from!]

BZII Expansion Pack Development Leader. Coming Soon.
