in honesty, im not entirely sure what the difference is between processing at 32 bit then 64 bit.

although i know compatibility with 64-bit is crap. will PB4a allow me to run BZII on a 64-bit machine? what about other versions of BZII?

I know it runs on 32bit, not sure about 64bit but after i install afew things on my newer pc  i should be able to try it on vista 64bit.

32-bit apps will run in 32-bit mode on 64-bit Vista, so it should still work the same as on 32-bit Vista.  64-bit XP, however, does not have the 32-bit WoW, so 32-bit programs will run in 64-bit mode, and if the program was not made with this in mind, it has a pretty good chance of fouling up, crashing, or just not launching.

thanks guys

GH please let me know if it works okay, the new PC i may be buying uses a 64-bit system so i may have to reconsider my options

64-bit Vista will be fine (well, as fine as Vista can be) since it includes the 32-bit Vista WoW (Windows on Windows, a 32-bit emulator for the 64-bit system, just like in 32-bit xp and earlier it was the 16-bit emulator, which no longer exists in Vista), 64-bit XP you may have issues with since it does not include WoW (Windows on Windows, not the game...).

thats okay it comes with vista so in that case i should be fine...

what exactly are the benefits of a 64-bit system over a 32?

Larger address space.  Technically it is every so slightly slower then a 32-bit, but with a larger address space it can do more calculations at once, assuming that the program is made to do so, which almost none are.  It does have one big advantage though, Windows 32-bit (any version) is limited to 3 gigs of ram, 64-bit lets you have much much more.

but if i installed 4 gb ram on a machine with a 32-bit system, would the system not run at all? or only use 3gb of the memory?

On my newer system i have pc with 8GB w/sli support installed with both WinXp Pro 32bit & Vista 64bit(dual boot). Neither OS have any problems with the amount of Ram thats installed.  Also i was talking to the PC tech when i was building my system, the OS will just auto cap your ram to whatever the OS supports.  Basicly ignoring the rest of the ram installed ram.

I've had installed a copy of bz2 pb4a 0on my hard drive using winxp os however i did run that copy with Vista 64bit & found no problems so far.

You can put in as much ram as you want, but 32-bit versions of Windows will only use up to 3 gigs, as GreenHeart said.
