alpha channels not working

trying to create some reticles, and also add some alpha channels to the black.

ive been trying to use gimp and use the 'colour to alpha' tool, then choose black. In GIMP it looks fine, but if i open it in XnView or in BZ2 the icon looks horrible, likes its had a bad border applied or something.

anyone got a better program to use thats nice and easy?
