In my oppinion, the missions are simply too hard to complete, the chinese units look like they are built out of LEGOs, and the whole expansion has 'unfinished' written all over it...
I'd like to hear different impressions, so fire away!
i never played BZ1, was too young for gaming at the time. BZ2 was my first BZ experience.
i can say im glad that BZC is getting closer to release. a good re-make of BZ1 in BZ2's engine. im pretty sure Avatar will eventually patch over TRO as well... would be nice to see what happened first
TRO was very rushed, and there was a steep learning curve back then as far as creating ships and such. TRO was done by "Evolve", a totally different group than the original BZ Dev Team, so as talented as they were they still had to learn everything from scratch. The opening movie was farmed out, and Activision helped with things like booking voice actors and such.
And, I personally know that the lead level designer is a sadistic SOB with no regard for human life, even his own. We've killed each other enough times in Rogue Spear, so I know he'd as soon squeeze the trigger as look at you.
And he's mean. Won't let me use Grenades at all any more. I mean, c'mon, so I blew us up a few times, should be OK to do that among friends. :)
Personally I liked TRO because the missions made me rethink my usual playing methods. You can't sit back and build an uber-base in TRO, you have to micromanage and be everywhere at the same time. Sure, some of the techniques are heavy handed (no Splinters, for instance, to thwart Mowerman's usual play style of "If it moves SPLINTER it!") but in all it forced me to develop some new strategies.
For instance, when you see a herd of Stolis headed for your base wait until they're almost in range of your GT's and then THUMP them forward. Make lines of minigun powerups in front of advancing Golems. Snipe Bombers LONG before they get near you, once you find their staging points. Cloak your ships when playing as Chinese, it makes them safe while sitting there.
In short, rip up the box and start thinking everywhere at once, or you're dead. :)

I too found it too hard to finish.
I don't have TRO, so the only game I have from Team Evolve is "Zaero", an expansion pak/mod for Quake II. Zaero was one of the very few Q2 packs, official or unofficial, to have become commercialized (you pay for) and with a storyline, although it was a little subpar than the 2 official packs that had a plot and story (i.e. The Reckoning and Ground Zero). Hmm, I think I bought it at Frys.
I never heard of BZC (I don't even know what it stands for???), but it sounds great - BZ1 with a new engine and perhaps a few improvements... If someone could shed some more light on BZC, I would be grateful!
It's the BattleZone Classic mod for the BZ2 engine. I'm trying to recreate the Battlezone experience in a more modern, much more mod friendly engine.
Originally I was just going to do the SP missions, but changes brought on by the 1.3 patch have stalled me long enough so that now it's pretty much a Total Conversion. General BlackDragon is doing the MP side of things and has done a great job of recreating the BZ1 shell.
-Av-
You have my full support! Can't wait to play it!
cant believe people still dont know about it. weve been waiting for years lol!
Well, I have first played BZ1 when it came out, when I was a kid. One day, with no explanation, it ceased to start. I was devastated because I couldn't buy it anywhere anymore, and in due time got over it and tried to forget... Only recently have I been able to download it from the net, and I'm now rediscovering all the wonders which I have missed so much!
Anyways, that's why I'm a bit out of touch :-)
But seriously, the Chinese units look like a bunch of toys. They could have done a much better job. With more creativity... You can immediately tell which two armies are from the original!
I dare anyone here to make a full race (chinese), add new technology code(cloak), and a full set of SP missions including cutscenes and voiceovers, in three months. Evolve had VERY little time to do what they did, which as I said had to start first with teaching themselves how to make everything to begin with. They obviously didn't catch on to everything as anyone who's noticed the BDog Factory and GT animation flubs probably noticed.
-Av-
I could do it (with the help of a team of course), but I would have to forgo school, a normal sleep schedule, and possibly bathing...
I was able to beat that mission once on the Chinese campaign where you start as a pilot and get to the cca comm tower. Once you do that you get told to either go to the one of the two bridges of whatever they are. You have to avoid getting killed by mines, snipers, turrets and fighters which i find almost impossible. Then you have to snipe the crates to destroy the convey and get to a point marked by a nav to kill like 5 pilots by yourself with a couple of dropping ally pilots coming to help soon and thats it. Out of frustration i took the game off and not playing it again until someone tells me how to beat it without dying :).
I remember that mission, and like many of the sniping ones the trick is to wait for the enemy to get into range. I sat on the hill figuring they were coming from all over and sniped what I could, then glided down to hide behind some building or other to get the rest. You can also pulse the Power Supplies to death to take out the GT's, if you don't mind spending a year on that mission.
The key is to remember that every single unit on the map is tasked with killing you, specifically. That means you have to kill everything, you can't just cruise by them and watch them wander off like many of the original BZ1 mission AI do. In this case just keep crouching and searching for sniper dots, which you can see through terrain and from a lot further away than the visible form of a pilot...
One trick in that mission when you get to the crate part is that a Health Powerup works on pilots in TRO... you can walk into it and get your health back. The other is to find a sheer cliff that the enemy can't get up on foot, sit on top of it, and snipe the crates from there. After that you can glide down over the enemy pilots but the sadistic SOB I mentioned earlier thought of removing your 'bunny hop' pilot transportation, so you may have to turn and snipe them.
If I remember right, the final few Flankers that chase you are NOT snipeable, either... very mean and sadistic...
-Av-
I don't know about the rest of you, but my TRO constantly switches from windowed to full screen mode when I'm going through menus, and it always changes my windows mouse cursor to the one from it's menu... It gets really frustrating!
Also, the programmers didn't bother to put the scroll down arrow in the briefing screen - in one mission there's the situation, mission objectives, and all you can see from the engineering report is the sub heading!!
Without disrespect to anybody, but these guys butchered the original Bz.
I have NONE of those issues at all.
I did every mission without cheats up until the last one, which I couldn't beat even with cheats.
Those damn snipers.
The shell switching thing is caused by XP not "loving" the avi files that play in the menu. Either do what I do and ignore it or remove/rename the avi folder in the red odyssey folder.
BUT WHY did they develop it in such a short time????
Either make it good, or don't make it at all!
You have to understand that it's usually not the Game Developer that calls the shots, it's the Publisher. As with many parts of life, it's the money that's in charge.
In TRO's case the expansion was a last minute idea, probably when some bean counter realized that more copies of BZ were given away with 3D cards than were sold, making a pretty decent market for a quick and cheap expansion pack.
SO, the publisher comes forward, says "you have three months to get this on the shelves", and Evolve stepped up to do it.
And one final thing to be clear on, the Publisher in question wasn't Activision. MacMillan did both TRO and Battlegrounds, and I believe it was the market performance of Battlegrounds that led them to make TRO. They recruited their level designers, Mick Brown and Toni Chafin, from the Battlegrounds testers, who were Mod makers before that. If it had been up to Activision BZ would have died a very quiet death, since they don't feel innovation is more important than money...
Again, I think they did a good job given the time and resources they had. I say that not because I'm Toni's friend, but because I've done a comparable amount of mod work and understand both the learning curve and the pressures involved.
-Av-
Are you saying that Bz as a whole would have ceased to exist? Bz 2 would have never been created?
If there's truth in that, it would have been very, very sad...
BZ2 was a fluke.
The luckiest fluke in human history.
Clarify...
Nobody thought it was going to be made. But then it was.
Bigbadbogie,
Maybe... But it was complete! It was a new Bz game! Unlike TRO. Although I think Bz 1 is a much greater accomplishment than Bz 2, I still like the sequel!
BZ2 is rubbish compared to BZ1.
BZ2s various mods are about 100x better than BZ2 itself.
Forgotten Enemies, Fleshstorm, QF, and about 20 others all dwarf what BZ2 was originally capable of.
I haven't played Forgotten Enemies, but it sounds like another TRO - an attempt to take money for a hastily slapped together project...
ACTUALLY, it was the first (and only?) Mod made by the majority of the community here back in 2001 or so.
It DOES have a bit of a rushed feel to it though. (IE: inconsistancies in established ideas)
Forgotten Enemies is the most fun I have ever had with a computer game... and it had nothing to do with money.
It was a huge community MOD!!!
A few inconsistancies are common in a project of that scale with that many people working on it.
Lizard told me that it was anarchy trying to keep everybody on track with its original development.
MacMillan acted on behalf of Activision to handle Battlegrounds, mostly I think because that was the era of people publishing collections of game levels that were found free on that new fangled thingy "The Internet". This caused a LOT of outcry from the fans that made the levels for free that found their work on a published CD making money at a game store. Doom and Quake were really hit hard by such things... MacMillan made it clear from the beginning that they were going to pay for the levels, and that it was a contest. This made it head over heels above most of the level collection efforts of the time. I have to admit I was actually surprised when I got a real check out of it...
I think Battlegrounds did well enough that MacMillan wanted to strike again while the interest ($$$) was still there, so they pushed for a full Campaign and we got TRO. Yeah!!!
***
Battlezone II was part of the conditions Activision imposed on the upstart group that wanted to split off and call themselves Pandemic... :) they had to give Activision two full games in return for their startup money. Rather than come up with two totally new games they played it safe and made sequels to two previously semi-successful games, Battlezone and Dark Reign.
And we got Battlezone II. Yeah!!!
:)
-Av-
They're on the net now, but weren't then. One of the provisions was that your submission wasn't already out on the net and they DID have people checking. As part of reviewing the maps they recruited from the Community which is how Toni and Mick ended up working for them.
Battlegrounds must have sold enough copies to support TRO, or they simply wouldn't have done it. The number one rule is nobody does anything for free, they always feel there's profit there or they don't do it. That doesn't mean they'll make money, just that they think they will.
I find it hard to believe TRO sold only 400 copies considering I saw a dozen copies on the shelves locally. Multiply that by hundreds of Electronic Boutiques across the country and that's a lot of $5 games in bargain bins the next year. :) I DO know Evolve had a few boxes of them as part of their deal and Hulka was selling them out of his garage many years later, since a lot of people never had a chance to get it in the UK.
The bottom line is what I said earlier. The money does the talking, makes the decisions, and calls the shots. The game developer is often powerless to control their own product, including design issues and time limits. If you say you need a year, and the Publisher gives you a year, then most of the time you're done in a year whether the game is or not.
The real question is does that sometimes make for a better game or not? If BZ had taken five years to make and came out all slick and polished and totally bug free would we still all love it?
Maybe not...

lets be more forgiving about that. i never played BZ1 but ive seen in-game stuff and im not that impressed. i prefer BZ2's, shell, HUD, gameplay etc, and its easier to mod in my opinion.
BZ2 V1.0 was a bug-full program but it was freaking good for its time in terms or graphics and things. BZ2 V1.2 was better, added a couple of nice things.
the public betas quite frankly make BZ2 the best game ive played. youre right in saying that the mods dwarfed the original game, but surely thats the idea of a mod really?
all the battlezone games suffered poor marketing if you ask me. they would have become far more popular if advertising was done like it was for lets say, COD4/5, GOW.
In my opinion, BZ2 was then what COD4/5 is to the gaming world now. Unfortunately, only a handful of people knew about it...
You need to play Bz1 to see why it's better than Bz2...
It has some things that Bz2 doesn't have.

Some people find it easy to judge a book by it's cover.
Amen...
Kids these days... give them pretty graphics and they think it's a good game.
BZ1 had it all, and I hate to keep adding 'for it's time' because it holds up well even by today's standards
as long as fancy shmancy graphics are not your only way of judging the game. I personally have yet to run into a game that had as much going for it as BZ1, or is as easy to mod as BZ2 1.3. Keep in mind that BZ1 ran decently on my P120 with Voodoo2, and BZ2 flies on the same system that I can't get most modern games to run on (my AMD 1.2 with GF6200), let alone look as good as BZ1 did or as good as BZ2 can.
The main thing BZ1 suffered from is that it took brains to play, and a soul to appreciate. Most gamers of it's time were either frenetic, mountain-dew hyped, trigger-fingering, twitch gamers addicted to Quake or top-down Warcraft strategy types... BZ1 required thinking, and planning, and a lot of patience with lag... :)
Lots and lots of patience.
-Av-
Right! Graphics aren't everything.
I even still enjoy playing FreeSpace 1 (for some reason I've always thought of it as a deep space counterpart of Bz 1).
A soul (like the one Bz 1 has) makes a game, not soulless graphics (Bz 2)!
I've played BZ1, TRO, RotBD, AND BZ2, personally I like BZ2 better, but I am one who looks at how receptive the engine is to my additions rather than looking at the game itself. BZ1 has more depth to its story than BZ2, so, if you ignore the game engine completely, and the quality of the graphics, BZ1 is best of all.
I got mift with BZ1 with the various errors and crashes I was getting, and I found the community was extremely childish (though it seems all games are that way). Lots of little fights going on include the recent one about ARF (which I found difficult as no one on the other side would give me any information (they just ranted BS and said some truly disturbing things), though I have found it seems the other side is the winner of that dispute (although they never did tell me ANYTHING, i had to dig myself, and they scoffed me for taking sides when I didn't)).
Really for me, it is the stability, modability, and community that make me like BZ2 better.
This is why I like BZC so much.
bah, im no kid i know its not all down to graphics.
admitedly, BZ2 could have been so much more than what it was.
What do you mean exactly?
Although I prefer Bz1, I still think Bz2 is a worthy sequel... It doesn't have the same gloomy/mysterious atmosphere (among other things that make Bz1 so great), but I loooved playing it just the same.
What was planned for BZII (http://www.bzcomplex.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=66)
What was planned for BZ Expansion before it got sent to Evolve (I doubt the concept art went over there) (http://www.bzcomplex.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=65)
Gracias, Nielk1!

I like the design of some of those models, i see they was going to make aircraft. I think i would have loved that. :) I plan on trying to write a aircraftclass.
"I got mift with BZ1 with the various errors and crashes I was getting, and I found the community was extremely childish".
Yes you're right, there are some things you need to know to stop the crashes or you'll be stuck. Bz has had a small group of players that seem to exsist to try and control and harass players for the past 2 to 3 years, currently most players are banning that group which was long over due. Unfortuneitly the game is dying off now because of it.
Yeah I hardly play it now or ever unless it may or may not grow back. What bugged me the most the first Chinese mission always crashed on me. As soon as i buily my first gt or power supply it crashed. I have no idea why it just did. So I had to save the game before i knew it would quit and then load it back up and then it wouldnt crash or quit. Kind of a hassle if you ask me.
BTW DX, your BzE ZFS files... I might have figured out how to get the files inside in a form I can open them. If I do find out I will PM and tell you just for the sake of it. My guess is the fact you cant just unzfs them and look at them was intentional! (I may be wrong, my method has only worked so far for the first two abetty waves.)
Yes, BZ1 was my first Battlezone and really is great. Then I got BZ2, years later TRO (a copy from a friend, should buy up some TROs, BZ1s, and BZ2s so I have a few), and finally, RotBD!
If BZ1 had support like GSH has given BZ2 earlier (since I think BzE is like the 1.3 of BZ1) then it would be a lot better off. DX, you just got access a bit to late so the community has suffered to much. You will notice the massive surge of BZ2 videos on YouTube lately, greatly supported by the 1.3 patch. You even see some BzE ones.
I feel that if they added aircraft, submarines and superweapons, they would have killed battlezone's uniqueness. It would just be another strategy game - like a FPS of any game from the C&C serial...
DX3? Wow... That's... Old...
I am writing some small programs here to facilitate my attempts with the files. It might be I can only recover uncompressed files. In that case, DX: 1, Nielk1: 0. :-P I don't know, I am using a rotating 4 key simple replace with some luck here, but still, only wav files.
TRO used the same as BZ1 I take it?
I wonder what RotBD did, since it was on the N64.
im basically saying what Nielk1 has just proven.
BZ2 could have been so much more than what it was. but im sure it was a worthy sequel. i just liked the gameplay in general. Thankfully GSH has improved on it a great deal, but i can see in those concept arts that BZ2 was planned to be something very different. Although a lot of that concept art looks like it was far ahead of BZ2's time.
The best things about BZ2 are that you can acheive so much in the engine. Its so basic but .dll power enables you to do so much more. At the moment im trying to re-create the atmosphere and feel of the train mission from GOW. It wont be easy but its more than likely possible thanks to BZII's adaptable engine.
Its just such a shame it was rushed out the door. But if it wasnt, would it still be as modable? GSH would be able to tell you.
I was actually referring to the DX not the ZFS :-p
I wrote half my post, walked away, then came back, causing that bad break in causality.
So, who has tried RotBD? And was it disappointing?
Is there a PC version?
Nope.
Then I'll probably never try it :-(
Project 64 with the ROTBD Rom works, although the quality leaves much to be desired.

Been meaning to get a nice set of information for avatar, maybe a BZn64 hud (evil thing).
Oh and yes, that is what mine looks like too. Do you have a box or anything other than the cart? I only have the cart and two N64s that only work when you don't want to play them (oh and only 1 power cord).
It all looks the same I think. I have seen the CCA Mammoth Tank (stolen it actually) and I have seen pictures of the NSDF one. There is art of strange things like Air Strikers that I do not thing are in the game. It has the stock NSDF and CCA missions in pilot and commander mode, and a new Black Dog storyline in pilot/commander where the Black Dogs see the CCA and NSDF working together and flip out and try to fight their way back to Earth to tell the world.
STRAT MP is just DM with AI units so I have no way to get an easy version of the tree. Best I can do is try to make a self sustaining base in one of the later missions, but it is hard as hell with the N64 Controller and my Gameshark seems to be bricked or I would be a lot better off.

I have to agree, as a successor BZ2 tried to do more than most 'sequels' dare to do.
Pandemic got a lot of criticism for NOT just making a prettier, more modern version of BZ1, mostly because the BZ1 community is made up now of totally diehard, psychotically devoted, terminally committed fans of the game. You have to really love a game to be playing it this long after it's considered dead, and even though modern hardware is hating it more and more each year.
I give them credit for making worlds that were alive, for adding more tech and introducing a build tree, and taking the story into an unexpected direction by 'morphing' the Black Dogs into Scions.
I take marks against them for not making sure the physics made it from BZ1 into BZ2, for dropping the lobby and not expanding MP play for the 'vets', and for not forcing the issue of 'official' status for the patches past 1.0.
But, you have to admit, the 1.3 patch opens up the possibility of the game issues pretty much ALL being fixed, and then some. Not many games have seen such support, with members of the Dev team taking it on themselves to do what Nathan and Ken have done with the 1.3 patch. Gotta give a TON of credit for that...

I bought an N64 and ROTBD off of Ebay just to have the game, and can't play it either. First off I can't handle the controller at all, and can't figure out how to hook up a keyboard and mouse :p . Secondly the graphics make me nauseous, seriously so, although that may be seeing them on a 48" screen (normal tube TV, pretty old, don't think I have some huge Plasma or anything...).
I do have friends, though, and one of them is documenting the ROTBD missions for me, so I can include them in BZC. :)

For real?? There are times when I get the distinct feeling that you are working too hard Av.
For real, as I want to include everything BZ into BZC.
I've already started (a little) on the TRO setup, although I find them VERY hard to do compared with the original BZ1 SP missions. Still, I've got a lot of good routines set up in the Scriptor now and that should help a lot when I get down to doing the campaigns for real.

Cloaking walkers will be fun to try to make... Sounds like a job for DLL :-P

I don't have the box anymore. The artwork is the same as the cart's though, with some pictures on the back.
And AFAIK, the Chinese walkers can't cloak.
cloaking walkers?
Phantom VIR, or semi-transparent stuff =]
personally, i HATE VIR. effect is awful. should havea diffuse rate entry or something
in TRO the chinese walker can cloak. Just hit G :)
You can just have it use 2 special hardpoints with VIR and Redfield. That is basically what cloaking is.
Well, thats the CHEAP way out.
The Cloaking code is essentially cloakondeploy in TRO and cloakonmorph in BZ2.
Also, cloaking locks up the weapon hardpoints (optional with modded ODF in BZ2). You are seriously like a ghost, you cant interact with the world without making yourself known.
ah yeh course, it is possible in BZ2. i forgot about the phantom unit...
deployable walkers then essentially...
Have the DLL swap out the weapons with a weapon called "CLOAKED!" and have custom VIR weps that take no ammo but have the name Cloak so that no matter which teh game shows first in the HP it says cloak. Assault Special is likely a good HP to use.
Quote from: Dx on January 31, 2009, 01:45:42 AM
Actually you can't, you have one or the other and both together is not the same as the TRO cloak is.
Actually you can, and the BZ2 cloak says in the changelog it is like those things being on all at the same time.
Obviously. We are talking about how it could be done in BZC.
DX, just messed around with BzE, Nice faking of the Chinese cloak on the Heavy Tank with the weapon! I wish BZ2 had weapons that knew they were selected and outputted that info to the DLL so I could do things like that. The end result would look similar for the walker in BZC.
Heh, misused the word faking....
Also, my attempts at decrypting BzE file worked up until character 2000 or so when the keys changed again. Not gan'na bother any more since there is no good that can come from it.
Cloaking walkers in BZC for a TRO remake will AFAIK have to be done with DLL trickery, and can be done in several ways given how in BZ2 'cloaking' just blinks you out... I miss the fadeout, that made the effect a lot cooler...
As for favorite method so far I've preferred switching them to my 'zen walker', which is just made up of hardpoints, and setting their PTeam to zero. This takes care of the invisible body, no weapons, and neutral status when cloaked. All I have to do is remember to copy over health and ammo during the switch.
-Av-
But then they can't command if they are the player!
Why not? It's a fully functional walker, just no real body to speak of, no working weapons, but it walks the same and sounds the same and everything...
I still haven't figured out a way to COMMAND them to 'morph/deploy/cloak'. It'd be nice if every unit could 'deploy' and, for those that don't actually deploy it just set the 'deployed' flag... as it is I'm thinking I might need to use some sort of iface type screen...
Still lots to figure out...
-Av-
Maybe use the 'hunt' command and have the dll detect when it is told to hunt. Then get it to replace the walker with a visible one.
Quote from: Nielk1 on February 05, 2009, 04:32:28 PM

Avatar, He means if you switch the player thats in a cloaking walker to team 0, they cant command their recy/stuff.
I think nurfing the weapons and VIR/RedField is the best way. OR! You could make it switch to another walker with zero ammo and various stealth settings. I am pretty sure cloaked units are hittable, so a Zen walker would be unfair!
I didn't say switch their TEAM, I said PTEAM, which is the AI perceived team the player is on... the AI will ignore them completely this way.
-Av-
Until it shoots them that is.
I think when set by DLL the PTeam setting remains even if you attack... the engine uses it for things like you remaining on the enemy team when jumping into a sniped vehicle and losing your PTeam setting when you attack.
-Av-
If Battlezone was Checkers then The Red Odyssey was Chess. It was best received by those who played through Battlezone on hard with their eyes closed. Sure, the voice acting was horrible, the Chinese units looked beyond ugly, and it was crash prone, but nothing challenged your battlefield assesment and dogfighting skills quite like TRO did.
Part of the reason for that is that every enemy unit was keyed in on the Player. This keeps the pressure up, makes you run full-out all the time since you know they're coming for you.
Tony is a mean SOB when it comes to making missions, that's for sure. :) He still likes insanely hard gameplay, so I don't think he's mellowing with age.
I miss playing GAIPS on hard with him, as he's dropped out of sight. RL has a way of doing that to people...
